I am a senior mechanical engineer at a manufacturer of electronic monitoring equipment. We were installing a heavy measuring instrument and needed to level it by adjusting some 26 mm nuts. We could find no fixed open-end wrench in 26 mm so we tried a Knipex 8603250 (ten-inch, chrome, straight). OVERVIEW I was amazed at how handy—how wonderful—this tool is so I bought one of my own. In a nutshell: The description of the Knipex 8603250 as a “pliers wrench” is spot-on; it’s a handy hybrid. Why? Well, it isn’t a true wrench because you can’t exert as much torque as a wrench. But it’s not truly ‘pliers’ either because it has compound leverage—giving you more torque capability than regular pliers—*AND* the jaws stay parallel, like wrenches. In short, if you have final high-torque tightening to be done, you’ll still need a wrench. But for fast take-up in confined spaces where pliers would be suitable, the Knipex is superior because you get the same quick action of pliers, but have superior torque capability AND you won’t mar the apexes on nuts and bolt heads. DETAILS To avoid damaging the apexes on hex fasteners, one must adjust the jaws on a normal adjustable wrench as tight as possible, but doing so results in greater difficulty pulling the wrench off a fastener after advancing it a flat or two. The Knipex, on the other hand, acts as a clever combination of slip-jaw pipe wrench and pliers where you clamp *perfectly* tight on the flats (with more than enough mechanical advantage to achieve very high torques) and have a plier-like action for fast flat-to-flat cycling while tightening. Why would someone pay 2 to 3 times what they could get a comparable 'cheapo' adjustable wrench? Because it is worth it. I already had the 10 inch, and found the 12 inch is just as high of quality, with a little longer handles for more leverage, and appears to be a little stouter all around. For those who have never used a wrench like this, I'll give a quick rundown. You adjust the opening by pressing a spring loaded button, and sliding the movable jaw to a wider or narrower opening, as needed. Once set, it does not move, until you re-set it, unlike some adjustable wrenches, that will wiggle more open or shut. There is a little lever on the movable handle, that engages the movable jaw, so that the tighter you squeeze the handles together, the tighter the grip on the bolt. I have yet to have them slip, even on rusted or partly rounded bolts, in fact I believe one would be more likely to twist off a smaller bolt, than have the jaws slip, they hold that well. The jaws are as close to absolutely parallel as I have ever seen, so much so that I can grip half a penny with the 12 inch pair, the other half with my 10 inch, and with a twist of the wrist, the penny is cleanly sheared in two. The biggest bolt size I have used it on so far, is 1 1/2 inch, and they open just a little wider than that. One other nice feature, is that about 95% of the time, you can size it, so that it grips the bolt tightly, but when you open the handles up, the jaws open enough to allow them to rotate around the head. This makes for fast turning of bolts, as with a little practice, you just squeeze, turn, release, allow the jaws to rotate around the head as far as you can, and when you squeeze again, they grab the next flat. One other very, very handy use for these, would be in assembling roller chains. I do maintenance on a farm, and used to have difficulty assembling the master links on large roller chains. With their parallel jaws, and cam action to squeeze the jaws together, they make the job much, much simpler. I am thinking of getting a small pair, for doing the o-ring style chains, like on motorcycles, they help that much. About the only negative to them, other than price, is that they are directional, in that pulling them one way, they will almost never slip, but pulling the other way, they are not so secure. This can be a problem in a situation where there is not enough room to flip the tool over. A small quibble, for such a good tool. If you can justify the price, you will not be disappointed.

This is one of my favorite tools of all time. While it may be pricey, you get exactly what you expect in quality and durability. I was skeptical at first but after years of use, I not only bought a second one to keep at work, I share them with anyone I can to convince them to buy them too. The smooth jaws are non-marring and wont scratch up paints or metals, being perfectly parallel allows them to be used with out dents for a majority of the time. Due to the high leverage that the grips create, the amount of pressure the jaws can create does sometimes dent materials, you just have to grip slightly less. The smooth metal and smooth grip do get a little slippery when wet but I have not had any issues with dropping or not being able to get a safe grip on the tool. The smooth-ness also allows for a super easy tool cleaning. I do have some annoyance with the button press to adjust as it can be fickle to get to work sometimes but the tough button means you dont have to worry about the tool adjusting on its own. I have used these pliers to completely replace my adjusting wrenches and often times find myself reaching for these over sockets or normal wrenches. Highly recommend these tools for everyone, be it pro, DIY, or just a home owner.

Crescent wrench is now collecting dust forever. I love it. Wish I bought more sizes and/or doubles. (read the last line) I read all the reviews and was critical just like you; $50ish for a an unfamiliar tool is a leap; all the reviews said the same thing: "thought they'd have a weak lock-up". Of course they aren't weak at all and work fantastically. My Crescent wrench is collecting dust somewhere; who cares it sucks, this is new technology and is awesome; keep up with the times or you'll be like your old man and never try anything new. There is a learning curve as with any tool; I bet you weren't always so handy with a Crescent wrench when you picked one up for the first time. No, I'm not going to stop referring to the Crescent wrench as a Crescent wrench; read your history, it's a Crescent wrench just like channel-locks are channel-locks. Speaking of channel-locks, Knipex makes a superior replacement for those too; I recommend them as well. PROS (compared to a Crescent wrench): -no adjustment screw to slip and constantly readjust; it locks in place where you leave it. -no need to adjust perfectly; just compensate by opening or closing the handles to fit -no need to adjust between slightly different sized fittings/nuts/etc.; your hand does the adjusting (up to a point of course) -light weight; just as their replacement for Channel Locks are strangely light in the hand; i believe these are too -work well on small fittings -fast adjustment -deluxe ratcheting action CONS -pricey, but it only bothered me between hitting the "submit order" button and the time they touched my hands -wish i bought more for a back-up wrench -takes some getting use to, but if you're a tradesmen you have plenty of opportunities to do that. -everyone fingering your tool; but it's short lived because you tell them they're $50 and they're too scared to use them. those are dinosaurs....don't worry about those guys; just walk away in the middle of their story about walking to school in the snow without shoes.....dinosaurs. Seriously on the last point I went for the 250's not because I work on large things frequently, but I didn't want to be undersized. They work beautifully on small things too, minus the large handles sometimes interfering with range of motion in tight spaces; or this a small set would be nice. I would recommend the 250's as the initial purchase for anyone unless they KNOW they'll never touch 1-1/4" Just hit "add to cart" get it over with; the pain will go away when they arrive at your door. You'll thank me later.

I first saw this tool in store and it felt like a very high quality tool. I finally had a plumbing job that I needed an extra wrench for, so I went ahead ordered it. This tool is very versatile since it can be adjusted for any size nut up to the max 1 3/4 ". I love the ratchet action. It makes certain jobs much easier once it's properly adjusted. The grip is very flush and the handles are in a good position to work with. Oh... and it's MADE IN GERMANY! Those are the tools strengths over a traditional adjustable wrench, but I also found that my craftsman 8" adjustable wrench worked easier in some spaces and tasks during this project. In very tight spaces under the sink, the pliers wrench did work. I was using it to tighten the supply line to my new kitchen faucet. However, since I didn't have enough space for the tool to be able to ratchet, I had to remove the tool, flip it over so that the angle allowed me to grip the nut, and continue doing that. For this same nut, the adjustable wrench also had to be flipped over after every fraction of a turn, but the adjustable wrench shines for this scenario. It was much easier. It's pretty much common sense though. The adjustable wrench because of the nature of the way it works is good for jobs that requires removing it from the nut after each turn. The pliers wrench is designed to be able to ratchet so it shines when it doesn't have to be removed from the nut. Don't get me wrong, the pliers wrench will still work well even when it doesn't have space to ratchet, it's just more awkward to work with than an adjustable wrench.

After reading about 50 rave reviews for this product I figured to give it a try. After all, with prime I could return-no problem. In fact if they want it back they will have to send an armed representative to pry it out of my clutched hands. I doubt that I will ever willingly use a Crescent wrench or channel lock pliers again. This is the best tool I have ever had, and I am a lifelong tool junky of the worst kind. When they say that it replaces an entire wrench collection, that is just the tip of the iceberg. You really have to have it in hand to see how incredibly cool it is. I got the 7” size which is a great pocketable choice and can do things that would normally need a much larger tool. Grab this and a good screwdriver (Vessel screw drivers are excellent) and you can do almost any project. The only problem is that now I want to get a bigger one too for those monster plumbing jobs. I’ll just have to save up. Or maybe the Knipex people will reward me for a suggestion I have for a simple enhancement that would make this tool even more useful. If the upper jaw was sharpened right at the back where it meets the slider it would make an excellent wire cutter that would probably even work for good-sized nails.

These 7" long by 1½" max capacity compact smooth jaw pipe wrench pliers (a replacement for my channel locks) are phenomenal, as expected with all of Knipex's hand tools. I got a chance to borrow one of these that belonged to my journeyman and I was hooked immediately. The finish is quite nice, the weight balance is great, they feel very nice in the hand, open and close effortlessly, and the slide-lock button is easy to use and of low-profile design so it won't hang up on stuff nearly as much as others I've had before like the Milwaukee ones. The way the mechanism is designed, even though they open and close with barely a thought, they'll hold themselves onto a fitting practically on their own, and just pressing the top side will cause them to squeeze tight. Exceptional design, I'm happy to have bought my own finally after borrowing them as often as I could! Lol I'll report back once I've used this specific one for a while to confirm/bust the myth that literally everything Knipex makes is the best-in-class. So far it's been true of their linemans' pliers with the fish tape puller and crimp features (7 years and still cutting ¼/20s no problem), and their wire/side-cutters (we call them by the same name the Danish use to describe their earthen seawalls). I have the 10" straight and 6" angled-head wire/side-cutters; they are also 7 years old and have been fairly often cutting steel grid wire for that whole time, with no issues. TL;DR: I'll be shocked if these are anything less than fantastic like everything else I've ever got from Knipex. Lol if you read the whole thing, thanks for coming to my TedTalk! 😅
