First of all, we are a couple of 60 yr olds preparing for a kite day event. We hadn't used kites since our kids were young. I purchased a couple of kites and this winder. So much better than anything available in our day! It arrived promptly (2 days) and exceeded my expectations. It was extremely easy to use, easy to hold position and easy to wind back. I actually sent one of the kites up the extent of the string, no issues even though it was a small speck in the sky. Supper easy to bring the kite back to us. I rated the durability at only a 4 as the winder is plastic. Used with care it should last our lifetime. Thrown around by kids, since it is plastic, it will break. These kite string reels are of high quality and work very well! Thank you. My Dad was a Lockheed Missle Designer so when I was a kid our garage was filled with every kind of tool and project. So he designed and we made HUGE kites out of white butcher paper and 1/4" wood dowells and they must have been 5 ft. high since they were quite a bit taller than we were. We painted them with big orange dragons and lightening bolts and such. Then my Dad MADE these 'fishing reels' out of sheet aluminum and aluminum dowells, with a 2" pipe spindles with big handles all soldered together and loaded them with 50-100 lb test line. We flew these kites until they were almost into the clouds it seemed and out of sight up over the fields next to our house! When Mom called us to dinner, it took about 30 minutes to reel them in since they were so far away. Guess I should make some kites with my grandkids now, eh? And I can certainly use these kite string reels for this project as they are sturdy and well engineered! My Dad would be impressed. Thanks for reading my walk down memory lane.     • Good when it's good, but...

This thing is really good when it's good, but when it's not good it's abysmal. I'll get to that in a second. First, the size, it's fine. I'm a grown man with beefy hands and yes, I might have to alter my grip a bit, but it's perfectly functional. Biggest drawback is just how easy it is to get your line all tangled up with this thing. If you don't have constant tension on your line, your line is going to fall off the spool in loops and you might not even notice and before you know it you've got a puzzle Mensa's founder couldn't solve. I've re-spooled this thing twice. Maybe not the best choice for an inattentive or clumsy child. ... show more

    • A really bad design - ok not so bad after fixing it

U get what u pay for. I guess this applies here. When u have stronger wind it is really difficult to unspool and property brake it. The string twists up heavily after one use. I hurt my fingers when bringing the kite in. I would not give this to any kid it is dangerous This will go back update: so after first scratching my knuckles in heavy wind i tapes over the sharp metal edges with some duct tape. i still touch the edges because the winding knob is really short but with the softer duct tape it does not make bloody knuckles again. aside from this design flaw it works actually quite well. cannot say much about durability because wind was not so heavy as on first flight and only used it about 5 times. because it has no brake i use for heavy wind now a work glove to slow down the wheel. ... show more

My 3 year old grandson likes this better than the kite itself! He has so much fun spinning the wheel and examining it from every angle. The only reason I gave 4 stars on ease of use is that the clasp that holds the string to the kite is a little hard to open and close, and when not in use, other than tucking the clasp into the rolled up string or putting a rubber band around the spooled string, it is hard to keep the string from unwinding. The locking mechanism does help with that a little. Overall I highly recommend this product - in fact I bought two of them. ... show more

    • Perplexing Design and Line Tangle Lover's Delight

This product is designed very poorly. If there is any slack in the line, it tangles and gets caught in the area where the line spools through the hole. The line it comes with is so prone to becoming tangled that it is worthless. Avoid this product.

    • Perfect amount of String, Fast Retrieval of Kite, smooth function!

The kite goes UP fast and Comes Down fast with the perfect amount of good strong line for typical single line kites. For YOUNG children, remember string friction burns HURT. If used properly, there will be NO blisters or string burns. Do NOT hand the string reel to young children without locking the crank first. A strong wind can jerk the crank out of a young child's hand causing the inner string reel to spin and let out line very fast. The natural impulse is to panic and GRAB the string with the bare hand or to put pressure on the inner spinning real and get a friction burn. This is NOT a design flaw, it's just physics. Strong winds and larger kites can really pull too hard for a young child. I love this thing! Instead of taking 30 - 60 minutes to wind up 600 feet of kite string, it takes a few minutes if the wind isn't too strong. Also, string help up very well so far with a medium to large sized kite on a gusty day. Remember don't fly kites in a STORM!!!! ... show more
