DIRECTIONS: Items you'll need: long reach lighter or matches, charcoal briquettes, heat resistant cooking mitts or gloves. Step 1: place the charcoal chimney starter on top of a cold, clean grill. Step 2: fill the space under the vented base inside the charcoal chimney starter with a few sheets of crumpled-up newspaper or a few fire starter rolls. Step 3: fill the space above the vented base with briquettes. Step 4: with the long reach lighter or matches, light the newspaper & watch as the charcoal chimney starter evenly lights The charcoal briquettes inside. Step 5: Remove the upper grill grate. Very simple. I just loosely wadded up 3 sheets of dry newspaper and stuffed it in the bottom. Filled the top with charcoal and lit the newspaper in several places. After about 10 minutes I had flame reaching the top. Just carefully poured the burning charcoal out in the grill and put the burgers on. No lighter fluid taste. ... show more

Realize this seems sort of insignificant, but it's actually an excellent tool. We love these things. This is the 3rd one we've purchased. 1 for son, 1 for camper and 1 for my elderly father. So here's why I like it so much. Fill it up with Kingsford or whatever Charcoal briquettes. Squirt a little starter fluid, then light it up. The Charcoal will start pretty evenly while inside this tube. Takes a few minutes, maybe 10 or 15.. But once the coal are looking ready it's usually enough for a medium size grill when all are spread out.
