  • All the important features most people need at a low price.

My last kindle is a Kindle keyboard or Kindle Gen 3 which cost $139 in 2012. This one is a Gen 10 which cost less than half of that during a sales. When I first opened the package, this 10th gen looks so tiny I am afraid it may be unusable, but the screen measures the same size (6") as my Kindle 3, so the experience should be at least the same or better. Considering that it now now has a front lit light, a touch screen, support for bluetooth audio (for audiobooks), it supports nearly everything most people will need it for. 8GB is more than enough for a few hundred books + a few large audio books which I will read or listen to at any period. Since the rest of the library are on the amazon cloud and can be downloaded when needed, larger storage is not really necessary. Compared to the Paperwhite (2018 version) which is the next step up in price, I don’t really notice the difference in the resolution (167dpi vs 300 dpi) for most text based books (novels, for dummies books, etc) unless looking at very small fonts or images, so it is really a non issue. And I almost never use a kindle in places where it needs to be waterproof, so waterproofing is never an issue too. Plus, the large bezels of the 2018 paperwhite looks dated. The 10th gen Kindle has slimmer bezels , is smaller, lighter and so looks more modern in my opinion. To me, this 10th gen kindle is like having the paperwhite in a more modern package (also at a lower price :) ) What I wish this 10 gen Kindle has is the white text on black background mode (the paperwhite and higher models have this). I use this mode on my Kindle app on iPad all the time in bed. With lights off, the white texts on black background is easier on the eyes. This is an accessibility issue (for people with eye problems) so Amazon should put the feature on all kindle versions, not just the higher priced ones. Another feature that can be improved is the landscape mode. When viewing some figures or texts, landscape mode makes reading more convenient. However, the landscape mode on this 10th gen kindle rotates the book by 90 degrees anti-clockwise only, meaning I have to rotate the kindle clockwise to read the texts. The larger bottom bezels will be on the left so naturally this forces me to use my left hand to hold it. But most people are right handers, including myself, so it will be better if Amazon will add a “rotate” feature so users can rotate the book so that the bottom bezels be on the right for right handers. I believe you have to upgrade to the Oasis at 3 times the price to get an auto rotate feature that orient the book that way in landscape, which is crazy expensive for such a basic feature. Anyway, 5 stars for this 10 gen kindle for its excellent value, other than the small ergonomic shortcomings. ... show more

  • A great basic, more affordable, and entry kindle
Color: WHITE Option: Without Kindle Unlimited Offer Type: Lockscreen Ad-Supported
The media could not be loaded. This is my first kindle. I've been a "love the feeling of the page turning" kind of gal forever. But lately I've noticed I'm reading less and it's because transporting books is difficult. They're big/heavy, so you have to limit your selections. Whichever one I pick to bring somewhere often ends up being the one I don't want to read and instead I wish I brought the other ones. My love of reading surpasses my love of feeling the page turning. So I began thinking about an e-reader. During prime day, these go on sale so I got this model, the cheapest and most basic one, just to try it out. I'll say that the kindle subscription is actually fairly nice, and when setting up the kindle, take advantage of the free trial (whether or not you choose to continue it, it's nice to have for free). My trial is 3 months long, but I believe this varies depending on the current deals. I also got a month free for audible with two book credits, even though I'm not a new member to audible. I thought this was really cool, and all these free trials/books nearly offset the cost of the kindle. So far I love this kindle. It's REALLY lightweight, which I appreciate. It's responsive. When the kindle is in sleep mode, you can choose to have the book you're currently reading as the sleep mode Lock Screen, which is a thoughtful touch and makes it feel more book-like. The screen is truly anti-glare. I live in Alaska and it's summer so the sun is about 10ft away from me around 4pm. And still no glare. The anti-glare screen also does have a nice feel, reminiscent of paper. Turning the kindle on takes no more than a few seconds. It's not instant like most devices now, but it's by no means slow. Also while reading you can look up words, which is a nice feature to have while reading more difficult texts and expanding your vocabulary. Lastly a pro that has to be mentioned is that you can borrow library ebooks/audiobooks from the app libby, and send them to your kindle. These books are free and will return on their own once your reservation period is up. There's wait times for some so leave notifications on so you don't miss the books you've waited months for. All of this is in other reviews so I'll skip to the downsides of this basic model. 1) there's no dark mode. I didn't even think about this not being a feature when I ordered. I wrongfully assumed that by now, all new devices would have dark mode. But this device does not. There will only be white page with black text. I've read about dark mode with e-readers and overall even devices with the dark mode feature leave the user wanting more. I guess the anti-glare screen technology makes it difficult to also have a crisp/clear dark mode? But I'm no expert, this is just what I've seen in my research. Now although there's no dark mode, I do find that I can read this at night in bed in the dark. The brightness levels can be turned down so low that it's not straining on the eyes. The lower brightness settings also seem to have a warmer tone to the white background which is helpful when reading at night also. 2) if you do anything but read, the navigation is fairly slow and not intuitive. this device is great as an e-reader, that's what it was built for is to only load a page once in a while. loading web graphics quickly? not so much. the video I've attached shows a reference of the navigation while reading & turning pages. TL;DR this is a very simple e-reader but has all the things to make it a great one. ... show more

  • Great super lightweight and easy to use
Color: BLACK Option: Without Kindle Unlimited Offer Type: Lockscreen Ad-Supported
This was my first e reader of any kind. I finally decided to give one a try. I wanted something light that I could use to read laying down in bed. I read a lot of reviews before choosing. The paper white sounded great but this being my first reader I decided to go with the basic kindle because of price in case I didn’t like using an e reader. I have been very pleasantly surprised with this reader. It is super light. It’s smaller than I thought and the page is definitely not as big as a paperback page so you have to turn the page really frequently, but I have adjusted to that. It’s worth it for how light this is and easy to use. I love the built in light. I actually have no idea how someone would use this without it. I use it as a screen dimmer. If the light is bothering my eyes I make it darker, etc. Great feature. The battery is excellent. I read about 1-2 hours per night and the charge has lasted me well over 3 weeks. I love the raised edge because it gives me finger somewhere to rest without turning the page by accident. The screen is nice. I can see how maybe the paper white is sharper though I have never seen it because this screen doesn’t look super sharp but it’s definitely sharp enough for me. It doesn’t get blurry and I have Poor eyesight. I got the one with ads for the discount and I have no idea why anyone would debate about this feature - it is not disruptive at all. It’s just a screen saver. You swipe to open and the ad goes away. Doesn’t bother me at all. Overall really happy with this device. Will upgrade when I need to as I am curious about the screen on the paper white but I love this kindle for its lightweight and small features. It’s so easy to use and I can read in bed one handed and turn the page with just one tap of a finger. Glad I took the plunge. Don’t let the ad discount feature scare you away! ... show more
