  • Dragged down by too many problems
Killing Floor is a game that has a lot of great ideas, but is just so buggy, unpolished, and unfinished that it just isn't fun to play. Honestly, there isn't much that's good about it, which is a real shame. There are way too many things that drag this game down. Killing Floor's real problem is that it's basically an over glorified Ut2004 mod. It just doesn't look or feel like it's its own game. There's no single player campaign in Killing Floor; it's pretty much a multiplayer only kind of game. There are no bots (at least, I haven't been able to find out how to add any), which means that there's no point in buying this game if you want to play single player. Admittedly, there would be no point anyways, as this game needs Steam to install and play. Multiplayer is generally limited to six players. There are a few modded servers out there that support way more, though. A match of Killing Floor plays out like a game of Invasion for Ut2003/4. The players start out at a certain location, at which point they are attacked by hordes of monsters. The players need to work together to survive. There are different 'perks' the player can choose from that give them specific advantages and bonuses. Occasionally, when a player gets a headshot, the game slows down and speeds up; think The Matrix. It's kind of cool, but it ends up being more annoying that anything else. Killing Floor's graphics aren't very impressive by today's standards, either. One of the main things that bothers me about Killing Floor is that it's far too simplistic in a few respects. One example is that, in order to weld a door, you simply close the door and shoot at it with your welding gun. Likewise, in order to open it up again, you just need to do the same thing. The voice acting is by far the worst part of the game. It's atrocious. It's terrible. It's so bad that it makes me want to turn the volume all the way down. As far as I can tell, there are only three or four voice actors in it. The bad voice acting ruins the experience in more than one way. It takes away the supposed seriousness of the situation in the game, and it makes the game seem even more unpolished and unprofessional. I also mentioned above that Killing Floor needs Steam to install and run. This game has made me loathe Steam even more. Many a time I've been unable to access my profile due to an "unknown Steam error", which leads us to another problem - you can only change your character in the profile section. In Ut2003/4, you changed it in the settings section. You can't sell your game because of Steam, and if your account gets hacked, you're screwed because all of your games are tied to that one account. Killing Floor is a game that had a lot of potential, but it just gets ruined the terrible voice acting, mediocre graphics, and the annoying DRM. If it were a more polished game, maybe I would give it 3 stars. The fact is, though, if you paid more than $10.00 for this game, you got ripped off, which is depressing, because I paid more than $10.00 for it. ... show more

  • 'Killing Floor'...could have be so much better
'Killing Floor' is a horror themed, co-op/single-player FPS computer game made by Tripwire Interactive. I first became aware of this title when it was offered on 'Steam' and I bought it (some months ago) as soon as it was available through 'Steam' download. Being a huge fan of the co-op aspect of 'Left 4 Dead' I was eager to give this effort a try; especially enticing was the cost ($19.99) and the promise of upgrades to characters, weapons etc., something I thought I would have liked to have seen tried in L4D. (yet in retrospect, I'm glad they didn't) However, my anticipation of a great game soon ended with the first few attempts to play...let me explain my concerns: 1.a) I found the game somewhat confusing because all the military characters you have to choose from to play, look very much the alike (especially in the dark and gloom), making it difficult to keep tract on any one particular 'partner' you may have been trying stay with or to protect. 1.b) to be honest, 6 players just seemed to add more confusion, rather than being an asset. It's taken months to find a group of players willing to work together as a team in L4D (and getting 3 other of these team-oriented players together at same time I want to play, is often difficult); getting 6 team-oriented players, all together at the same time would be tough indeed. (and as any good 'team' player of L4D knows, it only takes one 'maverick' player to ruin a great co-op team effort) 2.) the 'infected' seems much less animated and thus less threatening as they slowly slog towards you (and certainly less fear inspiring than their counterparts in L4D). 3.) repetitive comments; computer characters saying the same phrase over and over within a space of a several seconds. VERY annoying, very quickly! And talk about irritating...just wait until you hear the voice of the gal whose the 'ammo/weapons trader'! 4.) and most importantly, the game just wasn't that fun to play; it simply lacked that intensity and visceral component that I still get every time I play L4D. I found myself getting bored very quickly with its repetitive audio tracts (voices) and the sluggish undead. On the plus side, the possibility of upgrades was an intriguing notion. However, I was so disappointed in the overall quality of play, I never got to the point of having significant improvement to my player or his weapons. To put it plainly, I couldn't be bothered going any further; I just didn't care. Conclusion: When I saw the relatively low price ($19.99) for this game, a few warning bells went off (I find you usually get what you pay for), but I purchased it anyway. I felt the the game was a quick attempt to cash in on the L4D bandwagon, but sadly, it is no L4D. The premise for a great game was there, but this game just doesn't deliver; it suffers from a lack of polished game play, intensity and most importantly, fun. R. Nicholson (cujo) ... show more
