This microscope kit is incredibly well-designed for beginners. The optics are surprisingly sharp, the LED lights are adjustable, and the included tools (specimen vials, slides, and even a petri dish!) provide endless experiments. My son was very excited to get this kids microscope and then when it arrived he opened it and he tried it and he was only able to see his eyelashes. Not usable and planning to return.

This microscope is a great STEM toy to get kids interested in science. It actually magnifies and comes with prepared slides to start looking at right away. So much fun for the kids!

While the quality of the microscope is quite good for what is essentially a toy, this kit does nothing to introduce a child to the world of microscopy. To begin with, though the listing shows four prepared slides as part of the kit, it actually came with ONLY ONE, the locust wings. Once that is examined, WHAT NEXT? It doesn't say. There are some blank plastic slides, and a well slide, but no cover slips which are needed to look and specimens with a microscope such as this. A child, without direction, will likely find this very disappointing unless their parent happens to know something about microscopy and can instruct them in its use. Back in the 1950's-60's, AC Gilbert Company put out chemistry sets and microscope sets that actually taught you something about science. Their microscope sets, when compared to this, came with what was needed, including an 'experiment' book filled with things to do with your new toy. They also contained a number of things needed to do microscopy including glass slides (that could be heated to fix bacteria, for example), cover slips, stains, and mounting cement, and that all important instruction book that told you how to use everything along with suggestions on what to do to enjoy your microscope, such as hay infusions and growing bacteria to study. As a kit, this is really little more than just a pretty good microscope and not really a STEM learning tool, sorry to say.
