  • Very Nice Well Made Portable - Does a Real Nice Job Cooling - Highly Recommend
I've been using this unit all summer here in Michigan and we have had some pretty hot/humid weather this year. Not a lot, but enough to give the unit a good test. Only the first floor of my home has central air so I bought this for one of three bedrooms on the 2nd floor. In the past I have used regular window units for the three bedrooms. Anywhere from 5000 to 8000 BTUs and they worked fine. The problem with the window units is when you get a cool night you're stuck not being able to open the window and each room only has the one window. And since I plan to install AC on the second floor next year, I did not want to buy new window units (two of them were ready to be replaced), for just one more year. So I decided to get one of these portable units so I could use it elsewhere after I get the new AC for the second floor. I decided on the two hose model just because it makes more sense to me. A single hose unit basically uses the air in the room to cool the condenser then blows it out the window, so it creates a negative pressure. The two hose model does not do that (although this one can operate as a single hose unit too). It draws in outside air to cool the condenser then blows that air out the window not taking any air from the room itself. Much more efficient. I have some experience with Air Conditioning so I know this to be true. Anyway, I went with the larger 12k BTU unit knowing it might be too big for the small room, But I did not want to go small because I might end up using it to cool my garage which is my home gym, next summer. For that I would need the extra power. Plus I figured I could open the door and cool the hallway and possibly another room. Which is what I did a few times when it got real hot. It was able to cool a lot more than just my small bedroom which is maybe 200 sq ft. I ended up moving into the largest room which has a vaulted ceiling and it cools it nicely. And by that I mean 69 degrees. I like to use a blanket and be cold when I sleep. None of that 75 degree stuff for me. If you want a room cold this unit will do it. Now if the room is too small it can bring the temp down before it pulls the humidity out so it might feel like it's not doing the job. I think this might be the case for some of the negative reviews I read. It actually seems to work better when i leave the door open a bit so it has to work a little harder. Makes sense actually. That said, I did a lot of research before I bought this unit. The reviews are all over the place so it was pretty frustrating trying to decide on a unit to buy. I ended up going with this one since the reviews were pretty good especially when it came to the construction of the hoses. They are very heavy duty hoses to be sure. I was not expecting them to be that high a quality. The window kit is metal and pretty solid. I have double hung windows so it works well, if you have sliders it might not fit as nicely. I ended up using painters tape to seal any gaps so I could take it out easily if the night was going to be cool - which I did a few times. Taking it in and out is not a big deal. As some reviews noted, it can be a bit loud, but not much more than a window AC unit. I normally run the fan on low unless I am cooling more than one room. To me it's like white noise, to someone else it might be annoying. I have never had any issues with water. Another advantage to the two hose system is that is uses the hot air to pick up moisture and blow it out the window. Pretty unique design. I have checked for water a few times by just holding a plastic pan under the drain. I got a little out, but not much. I did that like two or three times all summer. Every now and then I can hear a water gurgle, but it never ran on the floor or anything like that. Cleaning the filter is easy enough and the remote works well and is handy to have on the nightstand. I like to raise the temp to maybe 72 while I am gone for the day at work and it's going to be hot. Having the remote by the door makes it easy. Oh and one review mentioned the lights are pretty bright. Now that is a fact. Noise I can deal with, but the lights on the unit light up the fricking room. I ended up putting some white tape over them. I can still see what's going on, but it does not keep me awake. The unit itself is very solid and well made. There is nothing flimsy about the construction. It's easy to roll around even on low pile carpet. It is heavy to take up a flight of stairs on your own, but once there relocating it to another room is not bad. The window kit comes in a couple of pieces so it can be used in different sized windows. So make sure to keep the pieces if you ever plan to use it in different rooms. You'll see what I mean if you buy one. I think that about covers it. In my opinion this is a well made AC unit. Solid materials used throughout. I was very pleased when I took it out of the box. Oh and dI put it together without ever looking at the directions. ... show more

  • So far, so Good - But...
So far so good. It showed up pretty quickly after I ordered it. It's been running about a week now and is quite and pulling lots of humidity out of the basement. Tank is a little difficult to remove and re-insert, but I'll figure it out - soon. Like the interior caring handle on the tank. My Basement has been like a swamp with the stinking humidity... I really hope this helps keep it in check. So far, in combination with 2 fans (to keep air moving)it is. 1 complaint, the continuous hose adapter set up does not fit standard Garden house, it seems to be just a bit smaller? I had plenty of extra hose (left over from a central air conditioner project) I had planed to use with this unit to divert water to my only floor drain in the basement. DANG IT!!! I will need to go to the hardware store with the adapter and see if I can match it up with some type of a hose adapter. This kinda disappointed me a little, since I really wanted one I could set up for continues operation right out of the box. UPDATE 7-17-14 I was able to purchase a hose adapter at my local Hardware Hank (Eagan, MN.) and hose is now hooked up. Lets see how the continuous setting works now and how dry this thing will keep my basement. Hose is draining water and all seems to be working. Unit is humming along. My past humidity control had been my 38 year old Carrier Central Air Conditioner, which finally crapped out the tail end of last summer - I guess? The last re-charge (early Spring last year) the AC, guy told me I had been lucky it was still working and only needed occasional re-charges, considering how old it was. Since my furnace is 20yrs old plus... (and works fine by the way) I'm sure they (Heating & Air people) will recommend replacement of both and a vent cleaning too before installing a replacement. Doing that in the midst of peak AC season - not a good time for a reasonable price - is there a reasonable price? I'm certain it will cost more than I can currently afford. So I'm hoping this unit will help keep my basement in check (and becoming a swamp) until the fall specials start to be offered by the Heating and AC people. I have a portable AC unit for my Bed Room which gives me some relief from the oppressive heat & Humidity of a Minnesota summer. If I button up the whole house on the bad days (85 degrees plus) leave my bedroom door open and use some fans, I can keep the humidity on the main floor (up-stairs) in check some-what. I'm hoping in combination with this unit, I will be able keep the humidity in check downstairs and MAYBE a little upstairs too? Thinking positive thoughts. ;) If all works OK with this unit, I may buy a 2nd just to keep the basement nice and dry - even after I get my air fixed. I only need DE-humidifier in the summer, my furnace keeps humidity down Spring, Winter and Fall. Probably cheaper (electrical Bill wise) than running the AC when Humidity is the only real issue? There have been some days so far this summer that the temp was 70 degrees and the humidity dang near 100%. ... show more
