  • This Work Boot Marks The End of Traditional Work Boots as We Know Them...
Size: 9 Color: Magnet/Black
I have been a Keen footwear fan for several years now, and I enjoy wearing both their sandals and work boots. I used to exclusively wear Dr. Martens work boots, as they made good work boots in their "Industrial" line, but they seem to have done away with the old line altogether and replaced it with another that just didn't meet my expectations. I saw the Keen Milwaukee WP as the boot to replace it, and for years since I would wear this boot exclusively at work and for daily use outside the worksite as well. I noticed that these were beginning to go away a year or so ago, so I bought as many NOS pairs as I could, as I wanted to prolong my positive experience as long as possible. I still have a nearly-new pair that I keep just for special occasions, as their yellow and black theme has always been attractive and their comfort nearly unsurpassed. The Milwaukee WPs actually brought something to the table that the competition never did, their ubiquitous, rubber, enclosed toe pieces. This eliminated the toe wear all the other boots would eventually succumb to with repeated contact on hard surfaces; they would allow wear holes through to the steel toe in the leather. If you frequently kneel down and rub your toes along concrete floors, this will cause your boots to look pretty shabby pretty quickly. Then Milwaukee WPs delivered you from this entirely, as the rubber caps concealed the safety toe and would just shrug off floor rubs with ease and still look great month after month. The only downside was with that the rubber toe cap and the leather instep were essentially held together with glue, and eventually the glue would fail and the two parts would begin to separate. One could buy some time with some repair glue, but the waterproofing was never quite the same and eventually the parts would separate even further. I was resolved to dealing with this flaw, but my method suddenly got short-circuited as available replacements got scarce. That's when I got acquainted with the Troy boot. The Troy has a wonderful solution to the separation problem I had with the Milwaukee WPs; they created the accordion-style, rubber instep design. This area therefore gives the boot plenty of flex to accommodate frequent kneeling and rising. Since this part could freely give and take as the boot was flexed, there was no longer a pressure point to start the separation process that plagued the earlier design. I bought my first pair of Troys at the end of last October and have used them daily since then. Aside from a superficial nick in the leather part of the instep just beyond the rubber safety toe on the right boot, one would never know that these boots were daily worn for four months straight. The boots are like their predecessor as well in the "break-in" process; there essentially is none, you simply start wearing them and enjoy. Every leather boot I had before this time took a while to break in, so this is a real bonus. The boot itself maintains its attractive style. I chose the Magnet/Black style, and these are a sharp-looking boot. This color style kept my preference for a black/yellow theme, and I have been asked in public about them several times. I always tell the folks about them and heartily endorse them. For those of us that care, they are manufactured right here in the US, and I count myself as one that certainly does; go, USA! Even the laces are attractive and of high quality. One of my pet peeves for most work boot laces was their construction; either they were soft and easily frayed or hard and uncomfortable. The Troy laces are a wonderful, tough hybrid: soft enough to give slightly and remain comfortable, and hard enough to have not frayed so far. My Troys have handled weather in the great Northeast from late fall all the way through the current long, cold, wet and snowy winter around here. The waterproofing is exquisite; they may be the first pair of boots I've ever had that actually ARE waterproof. Quite frankly, I would often just smile and shake my head when I saw a spec for boots that claimed that they were waterproof; they were for a time or two, but not much longer. The Troys are so waterproof that the only time I got water in the boot was when I stepped into a puddle that was deeper than the boot was high, so water actually got in OVER THE TOP of the boot cuff itself. I have also gotten deep snow up under my jean cuffs and experienced some water entry as it slid and melted into the boot, but then another amazing thing happened; the boots remained warm despite this. Additionally, as I kept moving around, the design of the boot and its materials actually allowed much of the moisture to escape. Another interesting feature is the actual mass of the Troy. Compared with my old Milwaukee WPs, they are quite a bit lighter. Perhaps it is a combination of a smaller, lighter rubber toe cap paired with the carbon fiber toe guard that makes the most difference, but I'm sure it's the addition of newer, better materials incorporated throughout. This would include the aforementioned flexible rubber instep, the use of mostly nylon D rings instead of metal, very good stitching in place of rivets, etc. really make a stark difference that you will notice. When you're picking them up and putting them down for miles each day, it becomes even more noticed and appreciated. I do not sit at my job and so am on my feet all day long. I have stand-up workstations throughout my workspaces and have come to appreciate the great comfort and support the Troys provide. They are light, comfortable, warm but not hot, never cold and very supportive. When I'm on a ladder, the well-defined heel keeps my safe. The sole is both attractive and very slip resistant, and I have had the opportunity to put this to the test on ice, water and dusty surfaces. As I've said before, they continue to look fantastic day after day, needing only an occasional rinse and wipe to reveal their nearly-new appearance. As with all things in this world though, you can't really have it all. One thing I wish I knew for sure is if the soles have both electrical and oil resistance. I don't often find myself in work environments where this is an issue, but I certainly could be in my line of work. Another thing I found out was in the lace d rings and pull-on feel straps. The pull-on heel strap is certainly handy if you like to use it, but my Troys go on very easily and I seldom use them. The D rings for the laces that handle the last three turns at the cuff of the boot have provision for lace pull-through with hole in their anodized aluminum bodies or lace-latching with a simple hook at their ends. I don't like to prematurely fray my boot laces by using the holes, so I always use the hooks. About a month ago as I was loading my vehicle, I actually succeeded in hooking a hook on my right boot with the pull-on loop of my left. This freak accident actually caused me to find myself "hog-tied," and at that moment when I tried to turn my feet weren't there to stop me from falling right down on my rear end. Of course, the first thing I did was to look around to see if anyone saw me, you know, like a true professional, and I was greatly relieved to discover no one had. Thank you God, I’ll gladly take the bruises since you saved me from embarrassment! To prevent this in the future, I decided to remove the pull-on loops; I don't really use them anyway, and I eliminated the issue from ever happening again by doing so. Another nitpick I would like Keen to address is the overall color. My Magnet/Black boots are indeed mostly black, but I would love for Keen to make a true, 100% Black/Black (with yellow accents like these, of course) choice available, as the suede leather portions of the boot seem to be more of a dark grey-green in hue when observed closely. Not a deal breaker, but probably an easy fix for them to implement in the next version. One last issue isn't really an issue at all, but I know it's on your mind: the cost. These are not cheap boots. These are more like the Mercedes-Benz of work boots and are thus priced accordingly. That said, I can handily recommend them, as the quality you will receive is better than any competitor I've seen so far in the same price range. I've been wearing boots since I was in the US Army back in 1987, and I can honestly say that these are the best I've ever owned. I will be buying an additional pair, and I'll wait for the next Amazon Day to do so. I am glad I took a chance on these, as I was going to be forced to find suitable replacements for the discontinued Milwaukee WPs anyway and was almost certain that I'd be disappointed. The Troys did this easily and so much more. I actually wore my Milwaukees yesterday for an all-day excursion, and by the end of the day my feet were actually a bit sore. I've been in my Troys all day today and didn't realize how I much missed their comfort. Give them a try; if you have a use case similar to mine, I'm sure you'll find them a great deal when you put them to the test in your own world. Final verdict: five stars, hands down... Keen, you're a total class act, please don't ever change and keep on innovating. A++ ... show more

  • Great boot, super comfortable
Size: 10 Color: Magnet/Black
Great boots, very comfortable, super warm but not overly warm, and have great grip, super tough and durable. Quick to break in, the weight is very light on my feet. All around a very productive and functional boot. Can say probably the most comfortable boot I've had yet!!! Only downfall, do NOT get them wet. And if you do, be prepared to either find a way to magically dry them quickly, or prepare for the smell that comes with them. ... show more

  • Comfort but
Size: 9 Color: Dark Earth
Boots look great! First step inside, and the feel was comfy and soft. Tied the boots and something was stabbing my angle on the left side of the right boot. Foot was hurting during my first wear, but that went away before the first hour at work. Besides that the boots are great! Unfortunately that stabbing is still there, but seems to disappear within the first work hour. My last Keens left a scar on my foot. ... show more

  • Most uncomfortable boot I've ever worn
Size: 10 Wide Color: Dark Earth
I've heard so many people say how comfortable Keen boots are so I couldn't wait for them to arrive. I've owned most of the big name boots from redwing to Georgia and diehard to Timberlands and even cheap Walmart $25 dollar boots, these boots were so uncomfortable I had to send them back because I couldn't wear them. The sole is about average for comfort but the tongue is stitched to the inner boot on the ankle. The extra material( so it has give to put on) is folded over like a dart or curtain pleat. This rubbed my ankle raw after just a hour or 2 of walking around my house. I laced them tight and tried loose either way every step was painful. It only did it on one foot so I'm assuming it was probably a defect in the shoe. They are pretty light and they look great and are a quality looking boot but I could not wear them without every step being painful. I had to return them. ... show more

  • Waterproof and lasted 13 months.
Size: 11.5 Color: Magnet/Black
13 month review. They lasted until they didn’t. No real break in period, they fit right out the gate. They were waterproof until the soles split. I wore them 10-13 hours a day 5-6 days a week. I would buy again. I replaced them with the keen Skokie hiker mid for something a little lighter weight than these. ... show more

  • Most Comfortable Work Boots I’ve Ever Worn
Size: 10 Color: Magnet/Black
For years I stuck to the more traditional work boot. I have a pair of Keen hiking boots. When I saw they had an American made work boot, designed similar to the hiking boots, I was sold. I’d say they were broken in by day 3. I do commercial refrigeration and HVAC service. So I spend a lot of time walking and kneeling. These boots flexibility makes kneeling way more comfortable than the average work boot. Ive only had them a few weeks, so durability is yet to be tested. Even if they don’t end up lasting as long as a traditional work boot, I’m happy with the purchase! ... show more

  • Best wearing work boots
Size: 10.5 Wide Color: Dark Earth
I have worn Keen for the last 11 years. It’s the BEST work boot I’ve ever put on my feet! I’m a diesel mechanic so I’m on my feet 10-14 hours a day, all day! I wear the composite toe and it’s absolutely the best! You only get one pair of feet, might as well be comfortable while you work!
