I like the way this compass can be mounted on either a horizontal (over or under) or vertical surface. It can take a substantial inclination (as on a sailboat) before it gets pinned. The dial is large enough for me to see from about four feet away. In a pinch, it can be used as a handheld bearing compass, although sighting over the lubber line involves a little visual estimating. Very fluid and stable motion. One of the easiest to read cards Ive seen on a hand bearing compass. The card also has opposing reading making it very practical for overhead viewing.     • This product is for day use; there is a lighted version available from same mfg
I was hoping to get the backlighted model, which amazon.com does not offer. I use this compass in sail boat mostly sailing in the Puget Sound area and sometimes at night. I have to use a flashlight to read this compass, or carry it in my pocket - not very convenient.
