  • The hit of Christmas
The media could not be loaded. I'm very glad that I paid up for the Kato brand, it was well worth it. This was my first N Scale purchase. My whole family got into it around the Christmas tree, 3 generations, male and female. The cars are very well detailed, dare I say gorgeous. The engine is solid and smooth, going through the range of speed without any lag or sweet spot. I've had sets in the past where there is definitely a preferred speed, this is comfortable doing whatever speed you set for it. Only a minor critique, the track is a bit cheap looking but clearly very well engineered, it works really well and seems durable. Easy set up and take down in just a few minutes. To me that is a good sacrifice for the track looking a little "plastic". The cars are what people are paying attention to anyway, they are top notch for the price. I will definitely be buying more Kato N scale to build out a larger set-up. ... show more

  • High quality train set
The media could not be loaded. Just a beautiful train set I thought N scale would be too small but it's not it's actually very convenient. I just ordered the light kits for the cars.Packaging is great. Have lots of HO trains wanted to try a N scale. Kato train set are the way to go. Track goes together super easy. Cost a little more but well worth it. ... show more

  • Beautiful and works perfectly
I fell in love with this train from the moment I saw the box images. It took me several months to set aside the funds to order it. I have had it now for about 2 months, and It is so amazingly meticulous in fine details, wonderfully engineered, and the smoothest operational train of my four units. My grandson has almost forgotten that I have three others, including a Kato Bullet Train (only available from Japan.) Very, very pleased, and I expect it to be around a long time. ... show more

  • I ordered new and received used with missing parts.
Kato seemed like the place to start when I decided to start doing N scale model railroading. It has a quality surpassing all others from the research I’ve done. Sadly the set I purchased was “New in box” but the package was clearly opened before I received it. On top of that the set was missing the wire from the track to the controller. I haven’t decided if I will return it or not but it made for a disappointing intro to N scale. ... show more

  • I have been modeling for quite a long time and love trains. So Model Railroading seemed like a natural ...
I am 41 years old. I have been modeling for quite a long time and love trains. So Model Railroading seemed like a natural progression for me. I did A LOT of research before purchasing this set. I read a lot about KATO and it seemed the obvious choice. Well they were NOT wrong. It is a beautiful set. The detailing on the locomotive and card is amazing. Plus the train itself comes in an awesome case for storage when you are not using it. I was blown away by the performance as well. Quiet running train, but not so quiet you cannot hear the clickety-clack of the train( I LOVE IT!!!) Unitrack is VERY easy to use. I was up and running within minutes. Very easy to follow directions and even the oval was a blast to use. I ordered the M2 and V3 kits as well along with this, but they came the day after. I now have them all up and running and currently have plans to order separate pieces of Unitrack to complete my layout. Do not hesitate, you will NOT be disappointed with KATO and its products. ... show more

  • Very satisfying experience
My grandson is on the autism spectrum and loves trains. I bought this for his seventh birthday present. The set comes in a box. You open the box and the tracks and controller are in Styrofoam packaging. The track pieces fit into cutouts that are labeled with the track type, which corresponds to the instructions for the track layout. The other pieces, the controller for example, seems to be labeled in Chinese. I don't get that :) The engine and cars come in a box that slides out from the main packaging. The cars rest in foam cutouts. I put the set together with my grandson, it was quite easy. He was able to figure out the controls right away. One happy surprise, you can run the engine at full speed around the curves and it won't derail. My grandson is very happy with his new train. My wife and I are already looking through the literature that came with it picking out future upgrades. The unitrack system is very easy to to put together. The set comes with a "rerailer" which makes it easy to properly place the engine and cars on the track. ... show more

  • Train has problems
I bought this set planning on running it on a complex 4 X 4 layout. Engine and cars just will not run on any layout having tight curves. The curve pieces of track that are in the set are long gently turning. I can not recommend this set for a 4 X 4 out. Can not recommend the unitrack system: track pieces join easily but have a tiny high joint on one or both rails on most joints. The engine will derail and stop when it hits these high joints. ... show more

  • The locomotive itself has a nice heavy feel to it
Extremely detailed locomotive and passenger cars. The locomotive itself has a nice heavy feel to it. The paint on all cars and locomotive has a metallic sheen. even though its plastic. The light from the locomotive is yellowish and slightly dim. Running the locomotive at full throttle the flybar makes a atrong buzzing sound. The locomotive runs smoothly even at the lowest throttle setting. The locomotive is plenty fast and can pull all passenger cars with ease. The packaging for the locomotive and cars is great, looks like a book, but when opened has foam inserts to hold these in place securely. The track is easy to connect and disconnect and makes good contact. Its flexible enough once connected. You will soon be wanting more track to run the train. Overall, I am happy with this purchase. ... show more
