  • This is truely a great train and engine
This is the second Durango and Silverton I have bought on Amazon. I got the first a year ago and had to have another. The locomotive and cars are beautiful with a lot of detail I noticed some of the reviews about the engines not running or stopping after a short period. Low and behold I got a loco that had a wheel of the axel!! This is usually an easy fix and I suspect why some have reported locomotives not working. First, these locomotives are extremely delicate. Use a great deal of care when removing from the box or any other handling. When a wheel is off the axel you can use light finger pressure to press it back on. Press the opposite side wheel at the same time so you squeeze the wheel onto the axel. BEFORE PRESSING ON THE WHEEL make 100% sure all the wheels are aligned and the make sure the droverods are aligned between the wheels. The easiest way to align the wheels and drive rod is to make sure the solid sections on the wheel rims all point in the same direction Yeah I know you buy something new and it should be flawless. Sometimes they aren’t. It’s easier for some people to make the adjustment even though Amazon returns are fast. If you are unlucky and get a locomotive that has a loose wheel and are hesitant in the slightest just return it. This is a great set for a beginner or advanced enthusiast. The locomotive is DCC ready with an 8 pin slot in the tender. ... show more

  • Great starter set. The locomotive is detailed and fun to watch run
This train runs great and is fun to watch. Great starter set. The only thing I had to do with a couple pieces of track was press the rails flush with the ends of the track bed to make sure the mating rails met up flushly to avoid gaps between the rail connections. I just pressed the rail ends against a smooth hard surface until the ends were even. No derailment issues after that. The detail on this train set is really impressive, especially with the locomotive and its coal tender. Glad I got it! ... show more

  • FUN, FUN, FUN
Our grandson loves his first train, and he spends quality time learning about how trains have shaped the history of this great country. We’ve purchased age appropriate books for him to learn with, and we’re learning along with him. Easy to set up, realistic train engine and cars, with a light and smoke from the engine. ... show more

  • Believe The Reviews That The Locomotive STOPS WORKING!!!
Bought this product to enhance the holiday decorations in the house. The timer was set for the train to start running at 4:00pm and stop at 9:00pm. At first the last car kept falling off so I just removed it. Then after about a half hour of running the train started slowing down and then eventually just stopped. The power was on, the light on the locomotive was on but the train just stopped. I turned off the timer for the evening and waited until the next day. Again the train started to run, slowly this time, and after about 30 minutes just stopped totally. I started to read further reviews of this product and notice a common theme that the locomotive is a problem and often just stops running. I am returning the product and will wait until next year to purchase another one for the holiday decorations. I would look elsewhere if you are looking for a train set. ... show more

  • Awesome realistic train set!!!
I love this set! I got it to go around our Christmas tree, and I chose this particular set because I am from Colorado and I am fascinated by the Durango and Silverton/Rio Grande railroads. It comes with an 1860-1880 era combine car (#213 "Bitter Root Mine") and coach car (#333 "Tacoma"), an open-sided excursion car, a 2-8-0 locomotive #473, a power pack, speed controller and a decent-sized oval of track. The loop of track is a perfect size to fit on most tables, and also works well on floors. If you are looking for a very accurate model, then alert! : The locomotive is not a Rio Grande Class K-28 like the real #473, but rather a 2-8-0 "Consolidation" type steam locomotive. I think my only complaint with this set is that yes it does sometimes have trouble running at low speeds. My locomotive also has the tendency to slip on the rails, and has trouble pulling long trains. It is not a DCC locomotive, (It is a DC) however it is DCC-ready, meaning you can install a DCC unit if you want to ( the DCC unit is not part of the set; it is purchased separately). The first 4 photos are of the set only, the others are with add-on cars and track. I was so happy with the set that I ended up buying a bunch of add-on cars. I even found the other Durango and Silverton locomotive that Bachmann makes ( or used to make, since it's been discontinued), a 2-8-0 "Consolidation" #493 ( the real #493 is a Rio Grande class K-37). Both #473 and #493 have operating headlights, but no sound/smoke units. However, the piston got jammed in the wheel (this is #473) and snapped, and I had to replace the entire piston/driving rod setup. So, that wasn't great. Also, you do need to oil the locomotive and cars to keep them running smoothly. The suggestion is to oil it after every 24 hours of use, but don't oil it too often or it will not run well either. You also have to clean the tracks pretty often (do not use metal wool or whatever they call it). For me, a wet wipe works fine. ... show more

  • Very Nice Train Set
For Christmas I dug out my old HO trains from my youth to setup around the Christmas Tree. Unfortunately, they all needed service due to the lack of use. As I had some Durango and Silverton train cars from my visit there 20 years ago, I decided to go with this set. I am very pleased. The engine runs much quieter than my old trains and the couplers seem more reliable than the old style. I've run the train for hours with no issues at all. Very pleased with the purchase. As a side note, the controller seems to have much more power than my 20 year old controllers. My old trains (now serviced) seem to run better with this controller than my older ones. ... show more

  • 1st time electric train owner; for around the Christmas tree
Received with no damage to the set. Carefully assembled the track on our dining room table for first run(will mount track to plywood later). Handling the engine a little hairy with such delicate beautiful details but, train ran smoothly, no derailing...love it! Will make a wonderful Christmas train, with plenty of adult supervision. Beautiful model, details and smooth operation. Never going back to plastic rails! ... show more
