A throwback to my childhood! My first train set was almost identical to this one! Construction appears to be great, I like the detail they went to, and it performed without any issues. If you are looking for a good starter set, a child's first train, or you aren't a super serious collector, this is a pretty good investment. It's a simple train setup that features a classic steam train and some cars. It only goes in a circle. However, it comes with a controller and tracks. Quality wise, not amazing. It is pretty flimsy and cheap. You must be delicate when handling it. If you pull tracks apart without squeezing the clips on the bottom, they will break. Make sure you keep pets away. Your children must know how careful to be with this hobby. Overall, I would recommend if you are looking for a cheap but pretty good train. But this is more for people who want to get into the hobby. If you are looking for more toy-ish or a train to wrap around your Christmas Tree, this probably isn't the best for that. ... show more

Reminds me of the one I had as a kid. Got a cleaning car because I was cleaning track more then I’d like. This is for under the Christmas tree and they give you just enough circle track for that.

Bought this as an 'around the tree' Christmas decoration. Haven't been into trains since the Tyco days, and don't have fond memories of that brand. This was was different. Sets-up in 15 minutes and runs fast and quietly. It has been such a fixture, we left it up in the corner to amuse ourselves and the cat. I am amazed that nothing has broken, and no serious issues. I learned that somtimes the track seems like it is attached properly, but not really. Worthwhile to read the instructions that clearly explain to check the track connections for misalignment before using. Whether you are getting back into the hobby or gifting it to a newbie, I think these sets are great choices. If I had a do-over, I would probably opt for the Santa Fe or UP diesel sets, only because you have more accessory options for the more modern equipment. ... show more

We always had a train under our tree during the Christmas season when I was little and then the train got replaced by presents over night on Christmas eve for the next morning. I never started that tradition with my own children but decided I wanted to do it with my grandkids. This train was perfect! It reminded me of daddy's old HO train set and it worked wonderfully!
