This little book safe is just the right size to blend in on any bookshelf. The cover is very convincing, and although the page edges are slightly less convincing, they work for a casual inspection. If the book were sitting on a desk with the page-edges facing someone, they might draw scrutiny, as they don't appear evenly cut. The safe itself could be pried open with a pry-bar and some effort, but for the purposes of keeping a curious child out of it, it's perfect. If you want to hide something from a casual inspection of a room or from accidental discovery by a child, this is the way to go. If you are a concealed carrier and just need a place to stash your pistol overnight where a child won't find it while you sleep, this is fine. If you need to keep a more diligent burglar from finding it when tossing your house, or if you're leaving it behind for an extended period, you need to put it in an actual safe, mounted to the floor. But for hiding it in plain sight while you sleep? Perfect. I recommend that one cuts some foam to custom fit any object one stores in it, to keep the weight from shifting around and giving itself away. ... show more

This was one of 3 different "book safes" I bought just to see what they are like. Pros: Larger interior volume than comparably sized book-safes with the "real paper" feature. Having real paper around the edges means about a 1/2" of space all the way around is consumed by the paper, but this safe can use all of that space for storage. The minimum interior dimensions of the safe are about 5.75"W x 9"H x 1"D. Note however that the depth varies between about 1" and 2" depending on where you're measuring. There is a large recess from top to bottom for the lock knob that reduces the maximum depth by about 0.5", and the area immediately around the lock itself is another 0.5" shallower still. Cons: It kinda stands out because the binding doesn't look much like a real book. The front cover warped really badly after a couple weeks of just just sitting empty on the shelf. A large portion of the interior space is wasted due to how the exterior knob for the lock is recessed. Neutral: The lock could be bypassed with a large screwdriver, but that's also true of competing products. It's not really meant to be a safe as much as it is meant to be a diversion. A real thief could easily take it with them and open it at their leisure. The lock mechanism on the interior is exposed and may come into contact with whatever you keep inside.
