  • Perfect little tool.
Pattern Name: Laser Level
This is the second one that we have ordered. The first one had a battery stuck in it. We couldn't get out to change other than that. This thing is great.

  • battery removal
Pattern Name: Laser Level
There is enough metal in the AA batteries to get locked inside the level by the magnetic base. I tried a lot of things and eventually used a stack of button magnets to overcome the magnetic base and pull them out. This not a minor inconvenience. Every time you use it you should take the batteries out and put them in the pouch to prevent battery corrosion inside the level. I like the quality of build and the ease of operation. I will keep it. ... show more

  • Accurate enough for me
Pattern Name: Laser Level
I have learned the hard way that many measuring devices are not accurate enough to be useful for anything. My experience with levels has been no exception. My old laser torpedo level ceased operation and I needed a replacement. I chose the 40-6184 based on the fewer negative reviews and personal experience with my Johnson 24” beam level, which is accurate enough for my use. I purchased the level knowing there was a high probability I would return it. I was pleasantly surprised to find the horizontal accuracy acceptable. It is a 10” level and I had to place a .003” shim under one end to get the most accurate reading I could visually discern (flipping end to end). Projected to 10 ft that is about 1/32” error. Not perfect, but this is not a machine tool grade level. I am sure I introduce as much or more error in reading the level in a typical application. For the record, my 24” Johnson level needed .005” shimming. At 10 ft, that’s a bit under 1/32” error. The vertical level was off more than acceptable, but Johnson provides a calibration feature for it. I dialed it in to where I need it. Finally, I checked the y-axis laser accuracy relative to level. While the dot is larger than I would like to have, you just work to the center of it. I have an 8 ft surface flat to +/- .003”. The laser dot was spot on level over the 8 ft. I don’t have a reliable way to check the vertical and x-axis beam accuracy to the same confidence as the y-axis horizontal. I can’t speak to the durability and I agree with a previous review on the robustness of the laser switch. Its design quality does not match the overall craftsmanship of the level. Other than being heavy, I have no other complaints and recommend this level. Just check it for accuracy when you get it. There may be variation from batch to batch. If you don’t really need a laser, there are higher quality torpedo level options available in the same price range, but this was the best I could find in a laser torpedo level and I would have been willing to pay twice as much to get a better one. I give it 5 stars based on its performance relative to reasonable expectations for a laser level at this price point. ... show more

  • One of the best tools in my toolbox
Pattern Name: Laser Level
The magnet on this thing is serious! The lasers make squaring pipe an easy one man job. The vails I have found unreliable tho. I’ve had 2 and neither have matched my Milwaukee or other Johnson levels that all match each other
