This replacement is a bit sturdier than the original Nikon - the Nikon part has a rubber ring that gets pushed into a plastic collar and the rubber part has a tendency to get pulled out of the plastic ring when putting my camera in/out of my backpack. The round shape makes the entire VF visible on it's largest setting where-as the rectangular ones obscure the corners unless you press your face into it. Definitely a step up there. I do wish the eyecup was deeper however, to help block light.
