  • Can't speak for the newer versions, but I hope they maintained or improved.
Color: Black
Almost 6 years ago I was concerned about how much I was spending on a bluetooth speaker, but looking back this matches my top two JBL purchases but both are for different purposes. This is more of a review for anyone interested in the current version and I hope they have kept the quality the same. I don't beat this thing up, but it will put up with a lot of abuse, and you can tell that just by holding it. Sand, rain, dirt, I didn't worry about it. I didn't dunk it or submerge it in mud, but it is big enough that it shouldn't fall off a side by side or kayak. Great outdoor sound. I have DJ equipment but this is built to light up a pool party on the fly just using your phone and with that not set up and no worries about Florida weather. I've had this out playing in rainstorms before noticing and moving it inside and have not heard any degradation of the audio quality even several years later. Now I use it as my hot tub speaker. I have the tv optical output to a bluetooth transmitter and the latency is so low that the audio syncs with the dialog very well. It's nice to have the audio exactly where you want it so you can enjoy and also and respect your neighbors. This thing sounds a lot better than most wired soundbars, and if you connect it the way I did you can have it exactly where you need it at any time. My other favorite was the EON One Compact, but that is apples and oranges, that is for inputs and is not as durable, and is just a cute powered speaker that happens to have a really good battery. ... show more

  • Increíble Bass
Color: Green
I have owned many Bluetooth radios through the years. Bose,Klipsch,Altec Lansing. The Bose is great had a internal baterry, it is light, the battery lasted a few hours but the bass was lacking and in a beach if you wanted to blast it it didn’t go i high I wanted to. The Klipsch sound great when I had plugged in with the charger but when I took it to the beach or outside the volume decreased way to low for my liking. The Altec Lansing has great bass and sounded really good at high volume but I had to buy constantly 8 D cell batteries which was way impractical. This JBL Boombox is wonderful the best Bluetooth radio I have ever bought. I tried it in my house with the charger connect to it and the bass was incredible love to see the side woofers moving when playing a song and only had it like 50% of the volume because it was blasting. So I thought to myself hopefully it passes my outside torture. I took it to the beach and was floored on how amazing this boombox sounded. The Bass was impactful you can fill it in your chest if you are close enough. The back bottom works increíble you can change the settings for inside or outside listening( you can tell the bass sound better on this setting if you are outside). My friends where Very impressed on how loud and clean it sounded it had no distortion no matter how loud we force it to. I don’t have to worry on D cell batteries anymore. On a full charge I had playing for 6-7 hours and of the 5 lights that it had when it was fully charged it finished with 3 lights on. So i do believe it can go for 24 hours playing None stop. I even charged my phone and my friends phones while we where in the beach, so now I don’t have to Bring my external battery charger this works great for charging many phones while you listen to music. One less thing I have to worry about is when it rains this is waterproof I’ve seen many videos on YouTube of people throwing the JBL boombox to a pool and it was still working. Now I’m not planing to do this, but what I want to do is get one of those floating things to put my ice , cups whisky or beer and have the JBL boombox on top of that and have a party on the water at the beach. A cool thing that JBL Speakers do is that they can be link together and play at the same time. So if your friends have more JBL speakers you can have a party. One thing to note this thing is heavy. But since imma hometheater buff I know that good quality woofers and magnets are heavy. So if you want to get great bass and loud spl with no distortion this is the way to go. If you find it to heavy try out the one that comes before this one i believe is the JBL extreme( not sure) but if you want to get the best bass, loud clean with no distortion, increíble battery durability for those long outside Beach parties this is the way to go. ... show more

  • It's a chunk that thunk-a-lunks
Color: Black
Context of this review: observations from testing multiple genres directly after unboxing The speaker fully accomplishes what it was designed to do: deliver maximum volume with maximum bass at minimum distortion in any location. This product is meant for large spaces and parties, and the sound is therefore crafted for this environment. You need to expect a generally warm sound. JBL has produced a chonk speaker which naturally emphasizes bass frequencies through the sheer size of the side speakers. Other devices would be better for appreciating balances and appealing to certain audiophile needs, but this path is not the speaker's main intention, and this needs to be acknowledged. Keep in mind, the sound quality and clarity is still fantastic; it just sounds slightly warmer and less crisp than some of its colleagues because the lower frequencies are more supported. It is a boombox after all, and I honestly haven't yet found a product that better blends volume, clarity, and portability. Consider it like a knight build in an rpg game; very well balanced, but slightly more effort has been invested in health and strength stats than intelligence because it'll need to primarily tank through large enemies but still be versatile. That is this speaker. It is your knight. It outperforms the other knights at knight things. I believe the knight to be better suited for me because of its versatile abilities. Like apple jacks. Other cereals might have brighter colors, but apple jacks is completely superior in flavor, mascots, and general existence. If you disagree about the cereal, I look forward to reading about you in Jane Goodall's next research paper. How certain genres/artists sound on this thing: Adele - absolutely fabulous Andrew Huang - excellent General rock songs - the kicks and lower drums will be heavyish, and crispness may be lost depending on how well the initial track was mixed and the speaker placement 60s Jazz - the walking bass will become pronounced. Everything is very clear in the rest of the parts, but you might notice a difference Voces8 Lux album - excellent Kanye's "Use This Gospel" - slaps Really anything EDM, Hip-Hop, or other electronically produced music - total banger Modern country - actually pretty good, kinda surprised me The pyramid fight scene from Transformers 2: this would make a great bootleg home theater sound system Keep in mind that the sound is affected by where you place the speaker. Bass reverberates, so if you put it in time out in the corner facing towards the center of the room, both side speaker will reverberate off the walls and become amplified; the high frequencies will stand no chance. I found that the best audiophile setup is to place the speaker in the center of a room at mid volume on an elevated, small, hard platform (like a coffee table). If you want max bass and wish to disregard the well-being of nearby living organisms, put it at full volume on outside mode in the corner of a bathroom with tile flooring. Public restrooms also work well for bass testing, and people in stalls will be unable to interfere. If they are the kind of people to immediately get up to confront you, run; the speaker is not worth it. I purchased this product when it was heavily discounted ($270). I could have alternatively purchased 20 shirts, a stained recliner, a college textbook, or 252 chicken quesadilla melts from taco bell. I believe this boombox to be the most worthwhile of these choices. Oh and you can throw it in a tub and it will be fine. The quesadillas would not have been fine. I hope this review and its general babbling are somewhat helpful. ... show more

  • NO REGRETS WITH THIS SPEAKER
Color: Black
I was looking for a battery powered Bluetooth speaker to use around the pool and social events where using my big plug-in Sony wasn’t appropriate. I have to say this speaker is the perfect compromise on all levels. I’ve learned with battery power, there is always a compromise. If you want a very loud and long lasting speaker, you pretty much have to have extra size, weight, and cost. The Boombox offers extremely good portability, sound quality, volume, and battery life. Obviously battery life will vary, but it handles 5 to 8+ hour pool parties with moderate to full volume with ease. The battery life is really unbelievable! Most of the questions I see about this speaker is how loud it will get. Without getting technical what I can say is it is more than adequate. The Sony speaker I mentioned earlier is an MCH-V11. It’s roughly 3 times larger in size and weight. I’d guess it will get about 15% louder and has to be plugged in at all times. The JBL Boombox annihilates the Sony on sound quality, and it’s slightly less volume has never been an issue. Everyone is always amazed by the sound quality of the JBL. You can also daisy chain multiple JBL speakers with JBL connect which is awesome and takes the sound quality to another level. This speaker is very simple to operate and has had perfect Bluetooth connectivity with all my devices. It’s also very comforting not having to worry about your speaker getting wet! I don’t write many reviews, but I wanted to share my thoughts on this impressive little speaker. I have zero buyers remorse with this one. It’s worth every penny. ... show more

  • Wow - I’m no expert but this is great for all music types
Color: Black
We need a portable stereo for our portable projector for movies and whatnot. We have some portable speakers, but they are inconvenient to use and not all that loud (even though we syncs up 3 of them). We almost bought a smaller portable system until we saw this on sale. This is waaaaaay louder than those and very clear. Now we know very little about stereos, but to us non-experts, this was nothing short of phenomenal. Flat out, this is amazing. Setup was easy. While the instructions leave something to be desired, simply connect via Bluetooth and download the JBL connect app to update the firmware. It does it itself in 20 or so minutes and you need to do nothing. First off, we tried all kinds of music. We did rap and rock, holiday and musical numbers for hours (we listen to a wide variety of music, so we wanted a speaker to do well with all these genres). Everything was crystal clear. Not needing huge bass, we used it on the inside setting. I do like having an EQ but I didn’t find that I HAD to have one, so I decided to sacrifice that here and I don’t really miss it because it sound so good. The sound quality was better than our quite expensive home theater/stereo setup we bought nearly 10 years ago made by a well known, high end competitor. When used as a sound bar with the projector it was amazing and could be heard far away by all. Perfect for projecting outdoor sporting events and movies. Wow. Simply wow. Some people have said it is big and heavy. I don’t really find this at all. It does not seem heavy to me, and I think that is because the design is well done. You carry from the handle and it is well balanced, unlike some of the competitors out there where the handle is on the back or a side. Very portable. I used to have a boom box in the 80s and 90s and they were never this small and maneuverable. This is a sleek, well thought out design. I do wish there were covers over the sides, but apparently this isn’t really an issue, but it just seems like it can be one and I do worry. This thing is incredible. We didn’t even want to stop using it the first day it was so captivating (the time spent listening to it barely put a dent in the battery life according to the app). At 1/2 volume it totally filled our 15x20 room with sound where we use it and we couldn’t believe our ears because it was soooooo clear. I cannot wait to use this all the time for movie nights, sporting events, and general outdoor listening. I may even connect it to the tv it was that good (maybe buy a second one to make into a stereo set though). Can’t recommend it enough, and we are glad we got it. ... show more

  • Super Cool Solid Speaker Sounds Good 😎👍🎼 Super Cool Solid Speaker Sounds Good 😎👍🎼
Color: Black
Pretty sweet. 😎👍 When they say built like a tank they weren't kidding. Solid construction has a little weight to it. Quality materials and build. Button press is good backdoor flap is tight no worries about it accidentally getting open. Nice handle with rubberized texture on the bottom. Sound quality is NICE. Clear crisp with loads of bass. It sounds good. Here's something interesting though. I put it in LFM and it sounded like the bass got turned down. 🤔 its suppose to be the other way around. The highs are crisp the mids are clear and the bass is thumpy and boomy depending on what you're listening too and the volume you're at. It's good. Plenty loud indoors and loud enough outdoors as long as you're within a sensible distance. The bluetooth connects quick n easy to my phone but is having difficulty with my BT transmitter. 🤔 Battery charging takes a few hours. The one thing I am worried about in a portable is the exposed radiators. May rig some speaker grills. Is this worth $450? ... Its a steep price. I think $300 is a better price point. This whole thing is waterproof it floats and it has a long battery life. 😎 I like it and if they come out with a Boombox 2 that's a little bigger n better I'm all over it as long as the price isn't to sky high. So for around the price of a GoPro this is a sweet speaker. May pick up another bc you can hook up 100 of them with the connect + 😯 That's another thing other boomboxes can't do and from what I have seen it sounds even better when there are multiple units connected. And if you want deeper bass out of this thing put it in low frequency mode. 🤫 Just make sure you dont go to high on the volume 😉 or you'll blow the speakers. UPDATE: So good I got another one. Decided to get the green one. They connect plus easily and fast. Sounds great. Green looks good but looks a little more plasticky 🤔. It's not as elegant looking at others have said. Still good though but I think the black probably looks best. At least I can differentiate between the two instead of having the same color. 😁 ... show more

  • No regrets, but not perfect
Color: Black
I work in a very noisy environment. People all over my plant bring speakers to work. Most of them don't cut it, especially in my department. I took my time looking for a speaker and buying this one wasn't an impulse decision. After months of researching, I decided that the JBL Boombox was... My #2 choice. Yeah, my second choice, but I bought it anyway. Here's the deal. I required several things out of my speaker: 1) Waterproof 2) Durable enough to handle high drops 3) Higher decibels than my machinery 4) Great sound quality at all volume levels 5) Not a cheap knockoff 6) Had more emphasis on quality over flashy lights Honestly, JBL hit the nail on the head on all counts, but one other did it better-- Turtlebox. The only issue was that the delay in getting a Turtlebox was 3 months vs. 3 days (no exaggeration). This review is much like a conversation I had with a friend at work who wanted to upgrade his speaker and was a butt more patient than me. And, guess what? I still stand firm that JBL was my #2 choice. Pros/Cons in no particular order -JBL is larger (double the size) but lighter -JBL connectivity is much simpler -Easier to connect multiple speakers with JBL -JBL bass response is much greater -Both speakers are clear at top volume - You can't hear the JBL at full volume next to the Turtlebox*** -The sound from the Turtlebox carries longer distances - The heavy bass from the JBL works against it in loud environments Basically, for my situation, volume is king. Sometimes I just can't hear my speaker over the machinery and in larger rooms it just doesn't carry far enough. Don't get me wrong-- I actually love this thing. In terms of sound quality, bass response aside, it beats the shell off the Turtlebox. I use it for outdoor parties and in the garage routinely and enjoy every minute of it. In fact, it's probably the nicest JBL product I've encountered. I don't regret my purchase at all (aside from it going on sale for $125 less a few weeks later on Prime Day). I've tried a few of their smaller speakers and, sadly, always found similar products that were superior at the size and price, like the Charge compared to a UE Boom. But this speaker is second to none in overall quality. At work, this speaker has fallen from 10 feet up onto cement floors and only suffered some scuffs and scratches. When it's dirty, I spray it down with a hose. When someone what comes along with a JBL speaker, I can chain it together with mine just pushing a single button. Music is full and enjoyable (stop sneering at me, audiophiles). The battery lasts me about 14 hours at full volume, and much longer under less stress. This thing just lives up to everything it promises to be, and that's not something you can say about everything. I realize this came off as an advertisement for a competing product to some extent. I'm sorry, I just really need a bit more volume! That's the only reason it didn't get 5 stars. It's just not perfect (for me) in all regards. ... show more

  • IT SOLVES EVERY PROBLEM WITH THE PORTABLE SPEAKER
Color: Black
Okay I was skeptical at first. A modern boom box that has everything we wanted from the retro ones. The battery life is just hard to fathom. This thing uses a lot of power and the battery is able to keep up. It is pretty dang loud. It sounds incredible actually. The sound quality is super crisp. The low notes are able to really keep up even at higher volume. When plugged into a wall, it is louder by a little bit but don’t let that make you think it’s not loud enough on battery alone. It blew me away. I buy and test speakers a lot. Over 10 years. This one has solved the problem of the modern boombox that hits every mark of a perfect speaker. Rechargeable, great battery, GREAT durability, great sound, great build quality, and honestly great price. I’m surprised it’s not more. And it’s waterproof. Completely. It’s freaky being able to throw it in a pool. To touch upon durability, I was holding the speaker and was walking down a hill and started to lose control because the hill was steep and rocky. I ate it. Like it was hilarious to everyone there. The speaker hit the ground hard. I lead hard. It dragged across the sharp rocks and I got up, dusted myself off, and fell again after attempting the same thing. I had to get down the hill trust me. I fell harder this time. Hard enough to make me believe it was definitely broken. After I got up and into safety, I checked the speaker. It was scrapped and scuffed. But honestly I’m surprised it still works perfectly and the subs on the side were completely fine. I’m impressed. Best portable speaker to date and I’ve used A LOT. This is the real deal. JBL isn’t messing around. ... show more
