  • JBL/Harmon company does not stand by any representations of bluetooth functionality
I made the mistake of buying the first of two Boombox 3s direct from JBL to perform my initial evaluation. Then finding the surround acceptable and the price having increased, direct, I ordered this Boombox 3 through Amazon, with a claimed 1 year warranty extension. no extension was provided with the speaker, but before that could become an issue, the claimed bluetooth and "JBL Portable" app for android failed miserably. You are supposed to be able to give individual names to these devices. The process for naming will give every indication that it has worked, but an identity that the speakers and app must pull from my Samsung phone renames both speakers to the same name [phone owner]'s Boombox 3 within the second time that you try to connect to each speaker, everytime. I did this several times over, with the phone, and the 2 speakers forming a triangle that only separated each from the others by 4 feet, noting also that the bluetooth connection was entirely unreliable and not at all seamless. One paired speaker typically would continue to play. The other would drop out completely, then the one still paying would start to drop out, before both would start playing, together, again. There is a toggle in the JBL app that does allow the user to switch the designation of left and right between the two speakers, but since the app requires both to have the same name, you'd need a test audio source to identify which is actually playing which. I got online with a JBL tech to try to fix the naming and connection problems. We worked together for over an hour and a half, a period that included resetting both speakers to factory default, uninstalling the JBL Portable app from my phone, installing the app, and trying to go through the speaker naming for each again, and again the speakers being renamed, outside my control to stop it [phone owner]'s Boombox 3. There is no way to stop it. The tech endorsed my returning both units. and so I sent this back to Amazon's seller, and I do not fault either Amazon, or the seller, though as noted, no extended warranty doc was ever provided. JBL never gave me a receipt, but they demanded a receipt at first and would not accept the direct return of the first speaker. While I hadn't even gotten far enough in trying to make these function as advertised when working with the tech, I went over all the problems, including the sound arbitrarily dropping out and then back in, while arguing w JBL doirect, that they had sold be the speaker, so they had all the sale documentation. They ten seized on my report of the 4 foot per side triangle test and in a very warped, backward reply said that if the speakers are more than 10 feet apart, the bluetooth could fail. These speakers come with a 3.5mm TRS plug, but the plug is behind the access panel that provides their waterproof claim (which I also now won't believe). The 3.5mm isn't really meant to be used. bluetooth is the primary connection method, it was failing not at 10 feet, but at 4 feet, and they don't even stand by that! Harmon is a conglomerate name now being applied as an umbrella over a huge suite of acquired electronics companies, and these companies include the Android operating system, Samsung, and JBL so all of these components, the speakers, the phone, the bluetooth implementation and the JBL Portable phone app, thier al under that single umbrella, yet they all fail to work together. JBL puts together glorious lifestyle ads and claims you can purchase 100 of the JBL speakers, that include their smaller portables, and the large, wheeled party towers, and link them all together seamlessly, with zero operational issues. Be careful about wanting stereo, because they don't include that in the lifestyle propaganda or even in product by product descriptions/pages, but if you search into the downloadable docs, you find that only the same model speakers can be used as stereo pairs, and that's not 50 left and 50 right, that's one left, and one right channel, which... is exactly what I was doing, using two, exact same model Boombox 3 speakers to try to play music in stereo. Side by side, 4 ft, 10 feet, either side of a pool or a picnic ground pavilion, these things don't stay connected and while the online JBL tech I worked with felt that was grounds for a return and considered the units defective, JBL/Samsung/Android/JBL Portable/Harmon corporation says that it is not, and provides no warranty with regard to actual bluetooth capabilities, crediting environment as the cause for product failure. There's nothing unique about the two speakers I received, and if I could get them both replaced, and if I factory reset them, and reinstalled the JBL Portable app one thousand times, the results would remain the same. It's a garbage product by a garbage company. JBL, AKG, Harmon Kardon, Bang & Olufsen, Crown, dbx, Infinity, Mark Levinson, Studer. These are names past users speak of with glossy eyed rapture and all of these companies have been bought out by garbage peddling Harmon International Industries, Inc. "HARMAN, A SAMSUNG COMPANY" It's really sad, because any one of these speakers, all alone for its size, and considering that part of the container is taken up by a charger and (claimed to be) long life battery, put out better deep bass and overall quality of sound than anything else I've heard in this same size. I think now there is far better value in buying a larger cordless PA speaker at the same or even at a lesser price, since it is far easier to maximize the sound quality per dollar when not having to shrink it so small. Some of those can be tethered with an actual cable that really will allow uninterrupted stereo operation. ... show more
