This is my review for the JBL Authentics 300 Portable Wireless Bluetooth Speaker (White). I hope this helps you make a decision! Connectivity works great with both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and it's easy to set up. I love that you can control the playback volume with your phone (through the JBL app) even if you are using the AUX input with a turntable (though obviously you can only pause, play, or skip tracks when you are in Bluetooth or Wi-Fi modes). As for the sound quality, out of the box it sounded a little boxy and flat to my ears, but once you equalize it, this thing comes to life! It can be very bassy and punchy while maintaining good clarity at the same time, or you can make it more flat if that's what you prefer. It sounds bigger than you would expect for its size, and it can get very loud. For EQ, you can use the physical knobs on the speaker, but to get much better results, I highly recommend downloading the app. It gives you all the configurations and the possibility to shape the sound way better with the 7-band EQ. If you are not into EQ, it also makes it easy for you with a selection of presets that are pretty good and easy to choose from. I haven't tested the battery life yet, but it sounds promising on paper. I bought this with plugged-in usage in mind, but it can work as a portable speaker. It's a little bit too big and on the heavier side for that purpose, IMO, but you can totally use it that way. I got the white and gold one. The colors look great in person. The white is more of a creamy color combined with a subtle touch of gold (not tacky at all)—and they integrate better with my furniture and home decor. Construction and materials feel premium. The only thing I would change is for the volume knob to have a tactile feel instead of being smooth, but the LED indicators do a good job of letting you know the volume level, and the knob feels very high-quality anyway. This speaker may be a little expensive, but it is definitely worth the price! I take it with me when traveling, staying at Airbnbs, visiting friends, and even going to the beach. It gets loud enough to fill the space without losing its clear sound, and the bass is great. The battery can last up to eight hours, depending on the volume, so I can enjoy music for a long time before needing to charge it again. I also love the convenient handle because it makes the speaker easy to carry from place to place. The white color and retro design are so cute and stylish that it also looks great sitting out at home. I am very happy with this purchase and would absolutely recommend it! ... show more

I have been looking for a speaker for a nearly impossible space, a boomy loft with hard floors and high ceilings. It's an acoustic nightmare. Everything echos in this space. The JBL Authentics 300 appealed to me for its looks and sturdy build. Reviews that mentioned an imbalanced sound distribution overemphasizing upper mids and highs concerned me but sound is largely relative. I liked the option for bluetooth and wifi, and the inclusion of physical treble/base controls. I found the speaker on sale for $349 and took the plunge. So the speaker came and my first impressions are: heavy! It's a heavy speaker. It looks heavy and feels heavy and even sounds heavy. The build is solid like a guitar amplifier. A small child might have difficulties wielding the Authentics 300. The speaker is very, very easy to connect to wifi and bluetooth. The JBL One app is well executed, snappy, and responsive. I did not experience any glitches with connecting the speaker to wifi or bluetooth. How the speaker sounds depends on number of factors, which is true of all speakers. Like I said, my space is a nightmare for acoustics. Most speakers sound a little too boomy because of the echo and reverberation. This was very true of the Authentics 300 until I found the right placement, which was on a stand in a corner facing outward. Your circumstances may be different. The 300 is capable of impressive fidelity -- when positioned and adjusted correctly. Keep in mind this is a little boombox of a speaker, not a true stereo unit. There really isn't any discernible separation of sounds. For people used to listening to spatial audio, this speaker will sound comparatively one-dimensional. Likewise, where you are standing or sitting in relation to this speaker makes a significant difference in how the speaker sounds. Some reviews have denigrated the equalizer in the JBL One app, but I found it to be an indispensable tool in tweaking the sound of the speaker to suit various types of music. I have listened to everything from jazz and hip-hop to classical to rock and acoustic. Unless adjusted properly, the bass may be less prevalent in lower volumes. Ultimately, I'm not sure I will keep the speaker. I have spent more time trying to get it to sound right than simply enjoying the music. The lack of spatial audio does make the speaker sound comparatively bland. At lower volumes and in my difficult space, the Homepod Mini with spatial audio actually sounds fuller and more dynamic than this expensive speaker. This may be due to the fact that I am streaming from Apple music to an Apple product. That said, the Authentics 300 is capable of very loud reproduction while maintaining fidelity across the sound spectrum. In a non-boomy space, it probably sounds much better, but I'm afraid it's too much speaker for my echo chamber. ... show more

This is my first JBL speaker, and I'm really, really pleased with the purchase. I never really liked the mesh fabric on speakers that's why I never purchased anything from JBL until now. The authentics 300 is my best aesthetically pleasing speaker, it has more presence than my Fluance fi50 which is finished in bamboo and superior build quality over my other speakers from Tribit,SoundCore, Sony,W-King, Sharp and House of Marley( if design and visual appeal is a priority for you look no further) But how does it sound? This I can say with complete confidence, the authentics 300 has taken the #one spot amongst my Bluetooth speakers. It has the Fidelity and clarity of my Fluance fi50, the dynamic range and texture of my SoundCore motion X-600 plus a superior soundstage and the bass response is more impactful and controlled than My Tribit Storm Box blast!! The speaker is very impressive to say the least. There was one concern I had before my purchase, I saw a review on YouTube stating that the sound quality of the speaker on the battery was a huge roll-off in output, so I tested the authentics 300 at the park up against my Altec Lansing Rockbox XL( I posted the video on YouTube) and I happy to report that the JBL authentics 300 has more than enough power output on the battery to be heard and felt... But the battery is only capable of 8hrs of playtime. So that's my thoughts on the authentics 300 from JBL, it is an expensive speaker but, there isn't anything on the market that can offer the sound quality and aesthetic appeal in a portable speaker that it has, this speaker is a testament of JBL's legacy of sound reproduction at its finest!! ... show more

Sound quality is good. The WiFi connection to AirPlay is very frustrating. It’s not my iPhone either because it AirPlays to other devices just fine. I bought three 300’s to fill my home with music but has filled my house with frustration over the AirPlay feature dropping out after ten minutes of connectivity. Then you have to reboot each speaker in order to get the to connect again. I read some reviews before I purchase, but I didn’t dig in far enough. 90% of the negative reviews are regarding the connectivity.. even on their website if I would’ve looked a little further, they acknowledge this. ... show more

I had been toying with the idea of buying something like this since my inexpensive Block Rocker speaker crapped out a while back. I wanted something that was easy to move in and out as I like to take portable music out onto my deck when I'm cooking out there. I was introduced to this model when my friend purchased one several months back. I had some birthday gift cards to Amazon so I went out last weekend to have a look at these and I found it to be on sale for a price that was hard to pass up, so I grabbed one. First impressions out of the box... this thing is SOLID. It FEELS like a very well-made speaker. It's heavy, weighing in at nearly 10lbs. The dimensions of this speaker with the handle folded down are 13"w x 8"h x 7"d. It comes with a power cord for using it with AC power and for recharging the internal battery. The speaker boasts up to 8 hours of use on a full charge of the battery. The sound is amazing. I have never heard a portable speaker this size that produces the dynamic range response that this one does. The highs are amazing and the lows really THUMP. I don't think I could ask for better sound in a speaker this size. This speaker has Alexa and Google Assistant built in as well. You can use one, the other, or both. Both of these can be set up via the JBL One app. The app also gives you a TON of other control for the speaker, including custom EQ setups. The app can also control multiple speakers. This opens up a lot of cool situations where you can have multiple speakers running as part of a speaker network. I'd like to have a second one to play with the networking... maybe one day :) ... show more

I bought this to supplement or maybe replace one of my Google Home speakers. I was looking for better sound. I am not blown away by the sound quality. The sound actually sounds better when using blue tooth as compared to WIFI. The WIFI mode sounds muddy. The unit itself looks great (I have the white model), and you can change the bass and treble easily. The bass is very strong as advertised and fires down from the bottom. Also, as advertised, it has a carrying handle and you can easily move it around, but it is heavy and not what I would consider easily portable. It's fine moving from room to room, and not too big of a hassle if you want to take it to someone else's house. But if you had easy portability in mind, this is not it. I was hoping to be able to walk into my bedroom and say, Hey Google, play whatever, and not have to mess around with it. However, you have to turn it on, push the correct buttons to get into the Google mode, unplug my current Googel home speaker and then tell it what to play. My office is sort of part of my bedroom, used to be a balcony, so it's like two rooms. Point being, basically a 14' x 25' room. Okay, I have been sitting here at my desk once again playing the same songs on both and on the JBL switching from WIFI to Bluetooth. Haven't messed around with this for months. Same results. On WIFI, the Google Home Nest sounds warm and good. The JBL sounds muddled and tinny. Messed around with the treble and bass and could not fine the sweet spot. One song sounded like it was playing the same song overlayed on it at the same time with one slightly delayed, it was a mess. Switched it over to Bluetooth from my phone and as I discovered months ago, it sounds much better. I have taken it over to my friend's house and played it in a much larger room on Bluetooth and outside by the pool and it sounded much better than in this smaller space. I have turned the volume down, have it on Bluetooth in this room and it sounds pretty good. But so does my $100 Google Home Nest speaker right next to it playing off of WIFI. I can't put my finger on it; it's like it is missing the proper mid-range or something. I keep adjusting it and it is either too much treble or too much bass. If you have a larger room and want to play it at a higher volume, then it sounds good. And yes, it can set alarms, tell you the weather and all that kind of stuff that my Google Nest does, and it is louder, so there you have it. I was hoping for a better sound experience, and it just doesn't measure up, and it's a pain to have to adjust it to try to find the sweet spot. So, for my purposes, just okay. Now that I'm into this again after 12 months, it is really bothering me that I cannot get better sound from it when it is playing from the WIFI signal. I will have to play around with it some more.
