The solid color is more grown up but the backpack’s dimensions don’t overwhelm a middle schooler. I grew up using JanSport backpacks and the quality is the same as I remember. Got this for my six grader. Her school was finally allowing middle school kids to come back to in person learning during the pandemic. She wanted something more stylish then just a black Jansport but not too girly (shes more of a tom boy If I had to describe her) I was worried that this would either not be a real jansport or that it would be smaller. I purchased this because I recently moved into a second floor apartment with steep stairs. I have to carry my laptop and work gear up and down the slippery staircase, and I seriously felt like I had whiplash from my regular shoulder bag. This backpack is bomb! Solved my issue. It's Jansport so you know its reliable and I don't worry that it will break. It's super comfortable and has so much room! This has a very strong and durable water bottle holder which was the death of our last backpack (different brand). This one is very sturdy and has the necessary pockets. Unfortunately the zipper keeps getting stuck on the thick fabric next to it and the last time we had to use pliers to move it.
