  • Working hard since May 3rd, and rocking!
Style: Sewing Machine
I have to say I really like the Janome! I have been using it pretty steadily since May 3, making masks and other apparel and it's a workhorse. I like now much it's a no-nonsense machine. There's little to no digital interation, and everything's analog which makes it easier to manage when it gets fussy. Of all the threaders I have seen on machines, I like this one the best, it doesn't seem to get as clogged or stuck when in operation. However, like all machines there's little drawbacks - one is getting the bobbin wound on this baby. To disengage the belt to get the machine to start winding the bobbin was a small fiasco! I guess you have to be very careful how tightly you turn it to disengage, as on the very first day I got stuck with a jammed machine unable to wind a bobbin or sew from turning it too far. Multiple cussing and viewing of youtube videos later, I was able to manually fix the machine and it's been faithful since (side note - so grateful it was all parts and no electronics!). It's also fussy about the tail length of thread, so be sure to give it a little longer thread than you might, otherwise it may jam on you. However, it goes through multiple layers like nothing I've ever experienced - well worth it! ... show more

  • Sturdy mechanical sewer
Style: Sewing Machine
I purchased this machine as used on prime day, so I paid a total of $100 less than if I had purchased the new one. It did not come in its original packaging and the person who returned it apparently decided to keep the presser feet, bobbin case, bobbins and all the accessories, so I was unable to test it out until I replaced some parts. Also the spool pins were broken off and the shuttle was not seated properly so that the pin for the bobbin case wobbled around. (I think I saw a video of someone complaining about that, but all it needed was to be placed back in properly. It comes out to clear thread jams and for cleaning.) When my $20 worth of replacement parts arrived, I adjusted the shuttle, installed the new spool pins, wound a bobbin and tested it out. This is a sturdy machine and I love the feel of control that I get sewing with a mechanical machine. The computerized models do wonderful things, but I always feel like they try to do too much for me and I am much more efficient doing it myself. The tension adjusts easily and the stitches lay flat and straight. The manual was available to download online, so I have that now for reference if I need it. I am using this as a second machine to have something with zigzag that will do button holes, as the other machine is straight stitch only. But it could easily be the go to. I owned a Juki industrial machine in the past, made by Janome, and it was also a very good machine. Also, just as a side, I am fond of the old fashioned look of the black metal case. I am happy with my purchase. ... show more

  • Troubleshooting all Issues.. and it does not fix it.
Style: Sewing Machine
Had this machine for over a year. After the first 2 weeks it started running horribly. I cant tell you how many times I've taken it apart, oiled it, changed my threads, changed the bobbins and needles, messed with the bobbin adjustment, cleaned it... it still does not work properly. I totally regret buying it all together. This is supposed to be a heavy duty machine.. and the only thing heavy duty about it is my regret. UPDATE 3/22 - 16 months and I broke down and took it to a repair guy. He did a full work up. I paid the money, brought it home and it's worse than before. The reverse button ... ya.. it didnt like that. The clunking and metal on metal noise... and then the looping of the bobbin thread... seizing up the machine. I'm so disgusted by this machine...and I've severe anxiety about going out and finding another. I'm tired of dealing with junk. THIS Machine IS junk!!!! I have a pretty successful craft business....and I need to sew.. OFTEN. I cannot do it with this...and I've lost so much money with all the down time. AGAIN.. DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE!!! ... show more

  • Love this machine
Style: Sewing Machine
I was a little worried because of some of the negative reviews, but I received it today and started sewing on it right away. It’s much quieter and smoother than my last machine (a Singer Tradition). A little different to thread it, but I just followed the instructions; they are very clear. I had zero issues with tension which was a constant battle with my other machine. To be fair to my Singer though, I have been doing so much research on sewing machines lately that I found out when threading your machine you should never thread it with the presser foot down or it messes up the tension on the top thread......just thought I’d mention that for all the other novices like me out there who didn’t know that! This machine made it fun to sew instead of frustrating. Another positive is the weight; it seems pretty lightweight for an all metal machine. I thought it would be much heavier than it actually is which I appreciate since I don’t have a dedicated ‘sewing space’, and have to carry it from my storage space to use it on the kitchen table. Overall super happy (and I loved the little stickers that came with it). ... show more

  • It's not the best, but it will get the job done if you keep the mechanism clean.
Style: Sewing Machine
Something that really helped me was a youtube video from a sewing machine repair shop where they said that you can buy the best sewing machine in the world and it will still occasionally give you problems. There is no perfect sewing machine. In the video, they also pointed out that it doesn't take much to cause a sewing machine to jam. Even just a short little section of thread or a small clump of fiber can jam up the mechanism. I have found these things to be true. It's surprising how little it takes to jam the machine to the point where it won't move. If the machine starts to sound strange, slow down, or even stop moving, don't try to force anything. Stop and clear the jam(s). This also applies if the stitching all of a sudden starts having loose loops of thread or if the thread that goes through the needle starts snapping over and over again. Clearing the jams can sometimes mean removing the bobbin case, shuttle hook, even the needle plate. Look all around in there and clear out any bits of thread or fiber you find down in there. As long as you do that, you can accomplish a lot with this machine. It's certainly not the best machine, and if I had the money to spare I'd be interested in trying something different, but for now it's still getting the job done good enough. ... show more
