I think this is a great machine, as a beginner. I have been able to sew layers of canvas with no problem. I've also sewn very thin, delicate cotton fabric. There are a good number of stitch options and the owners manual is easy to read through and understand. Update: I have now had this machine for 2.5 months and my experience has been very unpleasant. The machine stopped picking up the bobbin thread, and after trying everything the manual suggests, I brought it to my closest sewing repair shop. The shop lady scoffed at my machine. She was shocked that it needed work so soon and told me to contact the company for a return. I contacted Janome who gave me the run around and referred me to the seller - Metropolitans Warehouse, which is actually a company called Brooke's Appliance Brothers Inc. I emailed them and they said that since I was out of the 30 day Amazon return window, I could not return the product. They stated they would extend me the "courtesy" of paying to ship my machine to them for repair. Well I am sure that the cost of shipping would be more than paying out of pocket for repairs at a non-Janome shop! Before buying this machine, I did a lot of research on the best machine for my needs and price range. Unfortunately I had to learn the hard way that it is a nightmare to buy a sewing machine online because warranty service and repairs must be done by an authorized dealer/repair shop. I'm a younger person, so I buy most things online, but I am telling you to avoid my mistake. I will likely be out over $50 for this one repair and who know what else will happen within the first year? Getting someone to accept responsibility to make in-warranty repairs has been challenging, and the closest shop is quite a drive from my home.

I just got my new machine yesterday and am already in love with it! I upgraded from a Singer 4423, which was loud and didn't sew very smooth. My Janome is much quieter and sews sooooo smooth. The only negative I can say, though, is that it sews much slower than my Singer (about 840 stitches per minute compared to 1100). I'm not sure why they didn't make it a little faster, but this is not a deal breaker for me. I still love it very much and am very happy with it so far!

Product was not easy to use. It was cheaply made. Could not sew even on scraps without breaking. Returned it on the next day. UPS said it would arrive in Kentucky on the 28th. It reads, still in transit on way back. I still have not gotten my refund. Amazon has never done me like this before. I have been an Amazon addict for years but am totally frustrated with this return of a faulty product. I need my money returned!

I've been sewing since I was 5, tried most models out there and this would be frustrating to someone new to sewing. Price point is okay.

I rated it lower on weight, but I was looking for a heavier machine to replace my all metal machine! Metal parts last longer than plastic! I worked great straight out of the box, and have had no problems with the bobbin and jamming that others complained of. The needle threader is a big plus, as my eye sight isn't what it used to be!

When I was told my 40 year old Necchi was not worth the effort to fix it, I was very sad. I researched "best heavy duty sewing machine". Janome was the answer. When I received it it was 90% just like my Necchi. I'm Happy. It took a little time to "break in", but now she runs like a dream.

Researched best sewing machine and came up with Jasome 1000. My old machine , Dressmaker, was purchased in 1967. I started sewing aprons to pass time due to the corvid 19. Little by little my old machine needed maintenance so we decided it's time to update . Love Jasome 1000, not over powered with buttons I'll never use. I was looking for a quiet and easy to use and found it with this machine. Having fun learning what Jasome1000 can do...

This machine is a little work horse, but it is not well designed. The bobbin is behind a little door behind the accessory compartment. You have to take that off, and open a small door to drop the feed dogs. It is too hard to drop the feed dogs because you have to remove the accessory compartment and move a lever that is beside the bobbin. It does not have a lot of decorative stitches
