Just got mine today. It does require watching the enclosed DVD. Also there is a good tutorial on YouTube I highly recommend. My knife also had to be adjusted to prevent looping at the edge of my stitches. Everything is working great now. I recommend taking the time to watch instructions.

I'll edit this review as time goes on, but I ordered it after doing a bit of research and knowing I wanted something sturdy, simple, and straightforward. Janome seems to have gotten it right with this serger. It came threaded, but my toddler got a hold of it before I could ;|, and I had to re-thread it before using it. I had heard that a serger would be extremely difficult, and while initially appearing overwhelming... it was relatively simple and straightforward... getting easier after each thread. I looked at a youtube video and also the manual. Once threaded it worked perfectly!

This is a good machine, but not great. Ultimately, I returned it. I'll break it down for you: The Pros: It comes pre-threaded with spools of white thread included (nice!), a blind-stitch foot, extra needles, plus the tools you'll need (tweezers, large and small screw drivers, foot pedal, and instructions). Because it comes threaded, you can pretty much start stitching right out of the box, especially if you're experienced with sergers. It's relatively quiet, small and compact (great if you're strapped for space), and fairly light-weight with a notch in the back that acts as a handle for carrying. It also has a decent motor and stitches up nicely. The Cons: Although I kept the tension fairly low, at "3", it goes up to 9 or 10, my threads kept breaking, causing me to re-thread the machine often. That was a real bummer, not to mention a time kill. I didn't find it difficult to thread, but I do have many years of experience with sergers, but as soon as one thread broke, another one followed. Every time I took it out to sew, I would spend time having to re-thread it. It was terribly frustrating. I really wanted to like this machine, but I ultimately returned it.

Got news for all!! Machine says JANOME......You will LOVE IT!!!!!! I purchased a Janome Memorycraft sewing machine a few years ago...and to say that it was the BEST purchase I have ever made is quite an understatement!! Needless to say when I started having constant issues with my older serger...which was most definitely NOT a Janome...I immediately went in search for a new serger which most IS a Janome. Needless to say...I am yet again THRILLED with my new machine. Janome is quality bar none!! Serger is easy to thread...so very easy to operate..does a superior job of over edging. Its wonderful!!

I bought the Janome 8002D serger because my local sewing shop recommended it for beginners. This is my first serger. I let it sit on my sewing table for about a year because it is so pretty, lol, but I didn't even attempt to use it because I was so scared of threading it. Now, I could kick myself in the butt for waiting! It is great for doing my edges on burp cloths and blankets. I had a hard time maybe the first 3 times of threading it, by the 6th time threading it I can say that I'm finally comfortable with it. The machine arrived in good condition but when I opened the box it did have a slight oil odor, I'm guessing it was the lubrication inside the machine, it went away after it sat out. One of the things that this machine claims is that it is whisper quiet...it is NOT quiet! Not at all! I myself, don't mind the noise it makes but if you are sensitive to loud noises, this is not the machine for you. Over all I am happy with my machine and would buy it again or recommend to a friend.

I researched for a reliable serger and decided in the Janome8002D. I am making cloth diapers for my daughter's first baby. I have made about a dozen and the serger has worked perfectly. I have even changed the threads and after a failure at the first try, I reviewed the video again and got it right. I plan on making some oil cloth table cloths and this will be perfect. All kinds of projects in my future!! No regrets. Arrived timely and packaged with no damage.

I like the machine but for the price they should at least send a cover and a cuttings holder. So when u serge something it all goes on the floor. It’s only a small plastic tray. Should have come with it.

Purchased May 2017...by December 2017, the lower loop thread started snapping. I cannot figure out what to do to fix it - even after watching countless videos. I’ve called a repair shop and they said it may be a timing issue. I’m so bummed about this - the machine wasn’t even a year old before I started having problems. I ended up going out and purchasing a Brother serger which has worked great! Not sure if I want to spend $200 to repair this one.
