Description

The Janome 712T brings traditional sewing back to its roots with a fully manual, treadle-powered design that requires no electricity. Built for sewists who value independence, simplicity, and mechanical reliability, this machine operates entirely through foot-powered motion. Whether you’re sewing off-grid or preparing for power interruptions, the 712T keeps you creating without relying on a motor or outlet. Please note: a treadle table is required for operation and is not included. Equipped with 10 built-in stitches and a four- step buttonhole, the 712T handles everyday sewing with practical versatility. Utility and stretch stitches support garment construction, alterations, mending, and home décor projects, giving you essential functionality without unnecessary complexity. Stitch selection is straightforward and mechanical, making it easy to adjust settings and stay focused on your work rather than navigating digital menus. Under the surface, thoughtful engineering supports smooth performance. A 5-piece feed dog system helps move fabric evenly for consistent stitch quality, while the top-loading full rotary hook bobbin promotes reliable thread handling. Manual tension control puts precision directly in your hands, allowing you to fine-tune stitches for different fabric types. The extra-high presser foot lift accommodates thicker seams, and drop feed capability expands your creative options for quilting, darning, or decorative techniques. Beyond its features, the 712T offers a focused, rhythmic sewing experience many makers appreciate. The steady motion of treadle power creates a quiet, almost meditative workflow, free from motor noise and electronic components. With durable mechanical construction and fewer parts that depend on electricity, this machine is designed for longevity and self-sufficient performance — a dependable choice for anyone who values timeless craftsmanship.

  • No electricity needed.
Love this machine. I have three machines over 100 years old. The only thing was that none of them would backstitch, unless you turned your piece around. I can backstretch with this one and do some zig zag stuff too. It is a little hard to get going sometimes but I really think that has something to do with the cabinet. As I worked on the cabinet, the sewing got easier. Minor adjustments. I do have electric machines but treadle machines make the best and prettiest stitches. July 2025, The only thing I have a problem with is the fact that the needle is not lined up right. I now have had this machine 3 years and have made 4 quilts. Like I said, the needle is off, just a little to the right. I haven't seen where anyone else has mentioned this. Am I the only one? A lot of the feet will not work with it being off just that much. Even the feet that came with it. Even with all that, I really do enjoy this machine. I loaned my newer computerized machine to a friend to make her quilt. I am using this one. ... show more

  • Great Machine
I am already in the middle of making my second queen sized jeans quilt with this machine. When I make these quilts, I leave on pockets, belt loops, and even the leather tags on the waist. This machine has no problem sewing right through all of that. It seems very sturdy and well built. It has a great bobbin system, so easy to load and you can always see how much bobbin thread you have left. This is also the easiest, quickest machine to thread that I have had yet. I already had an old Singer table, it was a hand me down from my mother-in-law, it is great to finally be able to use it the way it was intended. Getting the belt on was a bit tricky but then again, that was all new to me as I had never put on a belt before or even run a treadle machine. Like anything else, it is a learning process that gets easier once you have done it a couple times. If you have never done this yourself, it can be helpful to look up youtube videos on how to put the belt on and the best foot placement for running the treadle. The machine did come with a belt but I went ahead and ordered extras to have on hand if I ever need them. Yes, it is more "work" running a treadle machine than an electric, but that is one of the things I love about it the most. I love the self sufficiency and the total leg and lower back work it gives me while also being productive in making something myself. Who needs to waste money on gym memberships when you can do simply do something like this for yourself? It is a great feeling all the way around! ... show more

  • Ideal machine for no power areas.... love it.
I bought this for a cabin on an island. No power available but a generator that I didn't want to use all the time. I have used it solely for straight seams as I am not adept at treadling, I am sure with someone more adept, it would do well. It is my cold, rainy day activity, I have pieced a quilt with it and finished binding a quilt with it. It works really well and I love it (but I'd love it more if I were more skilled) The one drawback is that it doesn't have a light shining on the sewing area (duh, it's non-electric) and a headlamp is no good for me as when I am sewing, the body of the machine blocks the light. I solved it by buying a little light I could velcro to the machine and the light is on a flexible goose-neck that I can aim at the work area. Bought it 9 years ago and I love it. ... show more

  • It does so much
Unlike the Iron Lady, this machine does so much more. Zig-zag, buttons oles, reverse. It's a little wider than Iron Lady so if you can't afford the $3000+ sewing table, you will need to adjust your Iron Lady table. That wasn't a problem for me bcs my table was splintered and needed a board underneath anyway for support. So handy people that use a treacle keep on treadling. ... show more

  • A nice modern treadle that can do buttonholes and stretch stitches
The 712t sews the basic modern stitches well. I put it in an Amish sewing cabinet and was able to use it the same day it came. Be sure to order a belt if you don't have one on hand. Our power can be iffy, and I don't like to stop in the middle of a sewing project when I get going.

  • It's Wonderful!!
I had a Singer Treadle machine that finally became unusable. I found out from an Amish web site about this machine. So...I couldn't resist. It arrived in a timely manner. It is exactly what they stated. It fit the hinges on my singer treadle table perfectly. The panel where the flywheel is located has extended skirt made of plastic. All I needed to do was cut away that area that collided with my assist spring. It dropped right in and I began using it in less than an hour after it arrived. I works great!! ... show more

  • Great Machine for the price!
For those of us who have chosen to use a treadle sewing machine - this machine ROCKS!! It's STIFF at first (as other reviews have mentioned), but it does loosen up after a bit... and on the 'plus' side - you get zig zag stitches as well as numerous stitch lengths of the straight stitch as well as the ability to drop your feed dogs for doing freemotion quilting as well as machine embroidery. Also, it is a standard low shank foot post so if you have a regular sewing machine that is low shank, your presser feet will fit on this machine, as will your walking foot and your ruffler and all your little various feet you have for your electric machine and you get various feet with the machine also... anyhow... have fun with it... it's a good work out and it takes no electricity and it's QUIIET... There's some plusses there too! ... show more
