  • Nice and bright, solid.
Color: Black
Compact, sturdy flashlight with 3 settings. Low, high and strobe. You can also zoom the beam to concentrate the light and make it super bright in one area. This thing could also tune someone up if you were using it as a hammer style self defense tool in sync with the strobe setting. I've hade mine for at least 6 years. Still like new, it goes in the pocket everyday. ... show more

  • Mixed feelings
Color: Black
I just received my J5 today and my feelings are best described as mixed. I like the light, but I am disappointed. This flashlight was a #1 best seller on here and the reviews were very good. I ordered and it arrived the next day, which was a pleasant surprise. It was nearly dark when it I arrived, so I opened a fresh package and batteries and put one in and proceeded to test it. I tested it in a semi-dark room. A very dark room. Outside at near dark. And later at full dark. I also tested it again a few other lights I had, everything from cheap lights to those that cost a few more bucks. Pros: Build quality. It is considered a "tactical" light and it feels very solid and sturdy. Even the battery compartment and the thumb switch feel well made. I was impressed for a $12 light. The light itself, is a nice white light. No real yellowing to speak of, which is really nice. Cons: Brightness. Here is where my disappointment came in. This light claims that it is 300 lumens. There is no way that this is a 300 lumen light. While it is very bright, especially when zoomed down to a small diameter spot. I can see how people are impressed with the brightness. However, I feel that the people who are impressed with the brightness, have never had a nicer quality light. I took this light and compared it against my smaller Fenix E11. The Fenix is rated around 105 lumens and adjusting the zoom on the J5 to match the diameter of the Fenix, it was barely brighter. For a 300 lumen light, it should have put the Fenix to shame, but the Fenix, which is barely bigger than the AA battery that powers it, held it's own. I should also note that the battery in the Fenix has been in there for months as it's the light I carry in my backpack. My next test was against my Black Diamond Storm headlamp that is rated for 160 lumens. The storm has a very broad beam and setting the J5 at that width was not brighter than the Storm. The J5 was noticeable when I zoomed the J5 completely down and viewed them across the yard. Admittedly though, the Storm isn't meant for distance and did light up more of the yard. I also compared it against some sub 100 lumen lights, such as a Maglight, Garrity, and an off-brand light from Walmart. The J5 was noticeably brighter than those, as expected. As a last test, I put it up against my Bushnell Pro 500 lumen light...just for kicks. The Bushnnell outshined it, both literally and figuratively. I have two more cons for me, which are more pet peeves than anyone. The first is the squarish beam. I just don't care for it. Does it affect the functionality or brightness? Nope. Just prefer a nice bright circle. The next is the size. It was a little smaller than I expected. In my hand, the head of the flashlight is all that extends past my palm. Which isn't bad. It's a nice size to toss in a backpack. However, if I was wanting something for "tactical" use, I would want something with a little more meat to it. The small size, when paired with the tactical look and feel (lots of ridges and edges) make it a little awkward in the hand. It does, however, have a solid pocket clip, so I gues it's supposed to be smaller. Now, would I buy this light again? Probably. The build quality of the light is worth the $12. It also is a bright light for $12. Would I recommend this light? Probably. However, I would want it known up front that I feel that these lights are in no way 300 lumens. So if you are wanting a decently bright, well-made cheap flashlight then I would say go for it. However, if you need something that's 300L or better, then I'd save my money and put it towards a more expensive flashlight. Lastly, I have a complaint, but as it is not singluar to this flashlight, I won't place it in the cons sections. This light has what I consider a failing that even some of the more expensive brands to there have. That is the way they do the multi-function. The J5 has a high setting, low setting, and strobe. Pressing the thumb button once, turns it on high. Pressing again turns it off. Pressing a third time turns it on low. 4th time off. 5th time strobe. 6th time off. Then the cycle starts again. So what does this mean? Well if I turn on the light and use it on high then it is fine. However, if I go back and need it again and turn it on then it will be on low. Use it another day, well now when I kick it on it is on strobe. So each time I want to use it high, I have to cycle through the myriad clicks to get it back to where I actually want it. Again, most of the expensive lights also have this issue. My other lights also have this issue. I wish they'd come up with another solution. Maybe turning a switch on the barrel to lock it into whatever mode you choose. ... show more

  • Be Prepared! Dies with no warning!
Color: Black
A month ago, I would have given this flashlight 5 stars but I like to give stuff a thorough "test run" first. I'm an avid bowhunter with decades of experience and had relied on mini-mag lights for many years. I like a compact size, lanyard hole, not deer spookingly bright, and with an adjustable beam. The only drawback was the bulbs would blow out unexpectedly and they are difficult to replace in the field. Lately, 2 things have changed my mind on mini-mags and their slightly larger LED counterparts. #1 - Mags ain't what they used to be. Last 2 were junk. #2 - I ain't what I used to be! I'm half blind in the dark :-). Anyway, time to move on and I've run through a couple other junky models until I came across this one. First, the bad. - This flashlight will die without warning. Click the "on" button and nothing. I tried to light the flashlight the night before and it would not work. I took the battery out to make sure I hadn't turned it around after the last hunt and when I put it back in . .. voila, it worked again. Shame on me for taking it out into the woods the next morning. It turned on fine and I got to my tree (thank goodness) and climbed my tree. Once I got up there, I tried to use the flashlight again and NOTHING. Tried the battery maneuver again and nothing. I hunt from dark to dark and lucky thing I always, always carry a spare light and spare batteries. I used my old light to get out of the woods but later found out this flashlight worked again once i put in a new battery. Bottom line: This light does not appreciably "dim" before it dies. Always carry an extra battery and/or flashlight. Now for the good; I really like all the features of this flashlight. It is compact and the zooming feature of flood to beam is easy and efficient. The low beam is still brighter than my old mags and enough for my old eyes without having to go to high beam. The high beam would be great for campers and the like but IMO too bright for hunters but it's good to know you have it when you need it. At first, I didn't think I would ever use the blinker feature but I realized it would be good for safety purposes if injured and it would also be an eye catching signal if you hunt public land and have another hunter encroach on you in the dark. Also, this flashlight can have a lanyard attached to the clip with carpenter's line and it is very secure. I like to be able to "drop" the flashlight around my neck whenever I need my hands free. If I can see in the moonlight, I'll walk with it swinging from my neck. This is for safety, not my increasing blindness. *Please, always use a light when you move in the dark, even if you can easily see where you are going. I know a hunter/father of young children that was accidentally mistaken for game and killed with a shotgun slug to the chest while walking under a full moon. A fluke maybe but a lanyard is an easy solution that could save your life. ... show more
