Before anything else, I should mention: I shoot on a Nikon D810Nikon D810 FX-format Digital SLR Film Makers Kit w/ AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G ED, AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G & AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lenses, so that's part of the reason I can "get away with" some of the methods and aesthetic preferences I favor. If you shoot with a camera that has a much lower resolution, you shouldn't expect the same amount of clarity/detail - my own experience with this lens will likely be different than yours. So, that said: I've only had this lens for a couple weeks now but I'm already in love with it. I've always been a huge fan of wide angles, I tend to really favor my 35mm lens for everything but portraits (and even then I usually start out with the 35 just for fun). Lately, I've been asked to shoot some real estate/property photos and video clips and one of the biggest things I needed to really emphasize the space I'm shooting in was a wider lens. I did a little research and decided that trying out the Irix Blackstone was worth the "risk" because it gave me a pretty significant bump in the max aperture department. I do not regret it. This has very quickly become my favorite lens, though not for everything. It's definitely not a portrait lens and its application as far as product photography is fairly limited, but I've never had more fun shooting outside in my life and I'm VERY excited to start shooting spaces. The distortion is minimal and (though you have to be careful going handheld) it's also super clear even at the edges. I literally didn't notice any distortion at all until I set it up as close to perfectly level as possible and shot a brick wall straight-on, and even then it wasn't enough for anyone not-in-the-know to notice. I specifically got the Blackstone because of its rugged construction and hard case, both of which were largely understated on the Amazon page and on the site - I never held or used the Firefly, but the Blackstone feels AMAZING and SOLID and the case is fantastic as well. The lens came inside the hard case and THAT was in a metal box tightly packed with die-cut foam inserts; the whole thing was actually beautifully presented and I was pretty surprised how nice it all was. Furthermore, the infinity focus lock feature is the best thing I never knew I needed and it's spot-on perfectly smack dab dead on the infinity mark, so I can kind of just not worry about it as long as I'm going for max focus. I'm gonna put up a couple images so you guys can see, they're just some test shots I took while I was out and about getting a feel for the new lens. One thing you'll notice in one of the images is that there's a weird halo lens flare - that only happens if a particularly bright light is put pretty much dead center, which is a thing I don't do much of so it doesn't really affect me. I guess in summation, I freaking love this lens and I'm almost more excited about it than I was about getting the camera in the first place.

Shipping was extremely fast and package was very secure. Two outer boxes before you even get to the box for the lens. Upon opening the lens box, you see a lovely metal tin that holds your lens. Opening this metal box you come to a reinforced lens pouch, secure and well made enough to toss into a backpack with no worry of the lens becoming damaged. There is something to be said about a company that puts this much, time, effort, and detail in packaging alone. Going that extra step, you know the lens must be outstanding. This is a weather sealed lens, which in my opinion is better than any of a certain manufactures “L” lens. You take this lens into your hands and it brings back the days of all metal lens, before items were plastic. In many ways brought back pleasant memories of my Fathers Voightlander/Leica/Zeiss lens when they were still had old world craftsmanship. Maybe this will help some of you understand this lens build quality if you are a handgun owner, this lens is a German Built Sig Sauer or H&K. This lens shows that no compromise for the build quality inside and out. It feels solid and robust in the hand. With the lens being a Prime Lens without internal motors adding weight, instead the weight is added in better build materials. The glass is crystal clear, body is constructed of premium materials. Yes you are dealing with a 95 mm front element, so you Lee or Cokin filters need to be the pro size 100 x 150 mm. IRIX has thought of everything, giving you a focus lock, a firm focus ring, glow in the dark scale, and even a noticeable click when you have reached infinity focus. For someone like myself that does a lot of night-scapes and astrophotography you could not ask for a better lens. This lens is also outstanding for land and city-scapes. As I said before the lens is extremely resilient and preforms equally well in all climate zones. Now for a phrase of wisdom from my Father; “Merry your lens, camera bodies are like a girlfriend!” Many people will tire of the current camera body they own, but the will not tire of the glass they own. And anyone that understands anything beyond basic photography know the three most important items to great photos; The Right Light, The Right Lens, and a Camera Body. When you purchase quality of this standard you know this is a lens you will be out with your Children and Grandchildren teaching them to use and handing it down to them.

I bought this lens a little over 2 years ago for my Pentax K-1. Overall I was very pleased the lens. It seemed sturdy and well built. Images were reasonably sharp. I used it mostly for landscape and astrophotography. It's not without any aberrations, but it does a good job for the price. Manual focus works well for this focal length. It's great that it is weather-sealed. Unfortunately, it recently died though. It had not seen heavy use and was well cared for. The camera is no longer able to control the aperture, so it gives an error message and will not take a photo. Searching on the internet, it appears I'm not the only one who's had this issue with this lens. It took the company about a month to respond to my initial inquiry. They suggested getting a quote from their authorized repair center. It's out of warranty, and I suspect it will not be worth the cost of trying to have it repaired. I would have given it at least 4 stars if it still worked, but if it only has a 2 year lifespan, it's definitely not worth the money.

This is an excellent lens for the price ($600). Briefly i liked this lens for the following reasons: 1. Very solid build quality 2. Light weight 3. Great image quality 4. No chromatic aberration!!! 5. Minimal linear distortion Couple flaws I noticed in this lens were: 1. It has a minimal peripheral blurring of objects, which is very common in most lenses 2. If you point the lens towards a lighting object, you will have a reddish hallow at the corners of the image (see the example with the arrows) Overall i'm very pleased with this lens, check out the milky way shots I was able to take using it. It's excellent for landscapes and nature photography.
