  • “Alexa, turn on the Projector”
Size: 1 pack Color: R4(IR)
The media could not be loaded. ** Instructions for adding any button to an Alexa routine at the bottom of my review ** PROS - able to be added to Alexa routines - small and sleek - able to control devices spread all over the room - uses standard usb-c (cable included) - my devices were already in the database - can add buttons not in the database CONS - none, but it would be nice to add the device straight to the Alexa app, and control all functions straight from the routines menu, but I don’t think any IR device can do this yet. OVERVIEW WOW, this device is awesome, especially when you consider the price. I was surprised by how small the device is (I attached a size comparison with a pen). Setup was pretty easy, I just followed the instructions in the manual, and then connected the smart life skill to use the device with Alexa. MY USE CASE I have this controlling 3 devices: projector, TV, and soundbar. My goal in getting this was to easily transition between using my PS4 while sitting at my desk on my TV, to laying in bed on my projector, and vice versa. This worked out perfectly by using an Alexa routine (see attached video). I was a little worried that a device like this would only emit IR in one direction, similar to a remote, however, it was able to reach 3 devices on separate sides of the room. Amazing! I even pushed it behind my TV and it still works. INSTRUCTIONS TO ADD ANY BUTTON TO AN ALEXA ROUTINE I highly recommend you screenshot this section for later if you intend on using Alexa routines with this product. 1. Setup the device as shown in the manual 2. Add your device to the smart life app, most devices are already in their database, if it isn’t, choose the most similar device. 3. Once the device is added, open the remote for it. If there’s a button that you want that’s not included with the default remote, add a custom button. This will have you point your remote towards the device and hold the button to add, works perfectly. 4. Once all the buttons that you want are on the remote in the smart life app, then go to the smart tab in the smart life app and click on the tap-to-run menu. Here you’ll have to create a tap-to-run task for each function that you would like Alexa to receive. 5. Once you have all the tap-to-run tasks working within the smart life app, go to the Alexa app, and search for the smart life skill and connect it to your account. 6. In the Alexa app, go to the devices tab, click the “+” in the upper right hand corner, tap add device, then scroll to the bottom and tap other. This will pull in all the tap-to-run tasks into Alexa. Alexa will recognize them as scenes, therefore, you will find them in the scenes menu. 7. Now you’re ready to create your Alexa routine like normal and just add the appropriate scene to your routine. ** if you found this helpful please let me know by clicking ‘helpful’ ** ... show more

  • Automated my Halloween display beautifully!
Size: 1 pack Color: R4(IR)
We decided to set up a singing pumpkins display this year, but also made a promise to ourselves we would automate as much as we could this year to save on trudging out in the crappy weather to turn things on and off all season. The sticking point was a projector in a weather-proof housing that does not auto-play. So I sought a solution and this was it! I already have a Smart Life Hub, and a Novostella hub, which control lights around my home year 'round, and my Halloween lighting specifically in fall. I was able to use this WiFi IR to automate turning on the unit, navigating the menus, and hitting play at dusk. When my unit was showing signs of needing a break every 90 minutes or so (to avoid overheating in the enclosure), I was able to automate turning it off for 5 minutes and then going through the power-up process again to restart it several times during the evening, to keep things running smoothly. Not having to go out and turn things on and off every night has been a real improvement in our Halloween haunt routine. It's a set it and forget it situation now, and I highly recommend it! ... show more

  • Inexpensive, does the job
Size: 1 pack Color: R4(IR)
For the money this is a decent infrared remote controller that integrates with Alexa. Use of the device is not intuitive however. The Smart Life app that is required to operate the device and to connect it to Alexa is not particularly user friendly. I got this device because I wanted to be able to tell Alexa to turn my window fan on or off and to change its speed. To do that I had to take these steps: 1. Install the Smart Life app on my phone. 2. Register for a Smart Life account. 3. Add the IR controller in the Smart Life app. You have to hold down the small button on the bottom of the controller until the small blue LED on the side starts to blink rapidly. Then you have to enter your WiFi password into the app, and the app configures the controller to connect to your WiFi. 4. Add a device in the Smart Life app. You may be tempted to choose the "DYI" option if you cannot find your device's brand but don't do that because DYI devices aren't visible to Alexa. Instead pick a similar device, no matter if it's the right brand. 5. Edit the device you just added. Long press on the Smart IR icon (not the device's icon). Then click on the device. Then click edit in the upper right. Then choose Copy Button. Then press on a button you want to change, for example, the power button. Then you press the corresponding button on your device's remote while pointing the remote at the IR controller. Repeat for each additional button you want to program. 6. Go to the Smart section of the Smart Life app. Click + to add a Tap-to-Run button. Choose launch Tab To Run as the condition. Choose Run the device as the task. Click on the device you set up. Click on the button you want to trigger. Repeat for each additional button you want to access in Alexa. If you do not set up a Tap-to-Run button in the Smart Life app, you can't access the button via Alexa. 7. Go to your Alexa app, go to skills, add the Smart Life skill. 8. Go to Devices in your Alexa app, add a device, choose Other, and let Alexa discover devices. When Alexa is done you will see new "Scenes" for each Tap-to-Run button you set up in Smart Life. They'll be named with the device name from Smart Life and the Tap-to-Run button name, so, for example, if you set up a device named "Fan" and a button named "Power" Alexa will have a scene named "Fan Power." 9. To trigger a scene, say, for example, "Alexa, turn on Fan Power." If you set up a button named "Speed" to change the speed of your fan, you would say, "Alexa, turn on Fan Speed," which isn't a logical command but works for getting Alexa to tell the IR controller to send a press of the speed button to change the speed on your fan. All of that wasn't intuitive, the user manual that comes with this IR controller doesn't explain any of this, and I was lucky via some Googling to come across a good post in the Smart Life subreddit online that explained all this. Now that I've done that for myself, I won't ever use the stupid Smart Life app on my phone. ... show more
