Description
Intermatic's Smart Guard Whole House Surge Protective Device provides coverage of your customer’s big investment equipment, from appliances and computers, to HVAC equipment and TVs. This innovative SPD uses the IModule with LED lights for quick and easy indication when protection has been compromised. A blue light indicates the SPD unit is ON and a green light indicates surge protection is active. Trusted, state-of-the-art TPMOV (Thermally Protected Metal Oxide Varistor) surge protection technology eliminates the potentially hazardous failure modes that are commonly associated with standard MOV technology. I purchased this after a lightning strike damaging around $6,000 worth of our electronics. I am hoping this will assist in any future power surges. Although I do understand a power surge is luck of the draw when it comes to damaging various items in your house. For the price this is worth a shot! Very easy install, probably not a project for every DIY'er... But anybody that has basic experience with wiring can install this. You are going to need an additional double pole breaker for your style of breaker box, and it's not included in this package for obvious reasons. Depending on your install and construction of your house, the pigtails included to tie into your main electrical panel maybe too short. I choose to flush mount my surge protector, because of a combination of things the pigtails were too short. This is my only complaint of this product. In general easy install and looks great. I like the idea of the replaceable modules should you get a power surge. The only drawback I see is at some point the modules may not be available. Overall good product and as of now worth the purchase just for peace of mind.

I rated it low on "Easy of Install" only because this install is not for the faint of heart or those not skilled with electrical. This is not a do it yourself/no skills job. Now too the good stuff. The technical reviews of this product are great. Amazon price is good. The module setup means a $45 replacement once a mod goes. Since I have purchased a spare mod, my electrically challenged wife can replace a module if I'm travelling. Our interior service panel is in the garage. I attached two pictures showing the LED indicators in both light and dark. They are bright and easy to see when the status of module changes. This is important so the homeowner is aware of status and can take the appropriate steps. My install involved cutting conduit access holes in both the unit and the installed interior electrical panel to facilitate a straight on, shortest straight wire connection to the first two poles. This involved rerouting the wiring within the unit. 08/15/2019 installed. Once a mod goes, I'll add to this review so buyers know how long the mods lasts. I live in FL and all circumstances are unique. I will also update after six months or so of protection. Our home setup includes electrical service on the exterior of our home, directly opposite of our interior panel that has a small primary panel that services outside items like the AC Condenser, outdoor kitchen, etc. I installed a weatherproof Intermatic AG3000 to the exterior panel as some additional protection for the limited outside items. Inside electronics were my primary concern. The AG3000 is a disposable unit so no pods on that one.

Intermatic IG2240-IMSK Advanced Surge Protection with Easy Maintenance - Intermatic Smart Guard IG2240-IMSK Whole Home Surge Protector, Black was my choice after doing research on different whole house protector. On the installation I mounted it 6 inches away from my panel, used Wocloer Liquid-Tight Conduit to secure the wiring. I have a Square D panel that I installed the Intermatic IG2240-IMSK Advanced Surge Protection into. The only negative was that the White wire was almost too short to make the connection. If it had been the length of the black wires, it would have been a little easier. Overall, it was an easy install following the simple four wire connections. Two blacks to breaker, Ground to the ground and White to the other bus.

I purchased this product via Amazon for installation in my home after a utility-side power surge last month crisped some strip surge protectors. Almost everything in your home (except the couch), including the kitchen appliances, has at least one expensive electronic board susceptible to power surges (both internal & external). The really big capacity protectors tend to let smaller surges right on through to your devices, so it would seem that a mid-range surge protector is the best way to go in order to stop the majority of surges before hitting your devices. I especially liked the user-replaceable surge modules used in this product as a way for a homeowner to simply slide in a new one if needed instead of having to have an electrician replace the whole product each time you have a surge. But, of the 3 modules that came with this, one of the three was DOA, so I had to reduce the rating by one star. Other than that, it looks to be a great product in this niche.

This unit comes with everything needed for a flush or surface mount. Nothing additional is required for mounting but an additional 30amp breaker will need to be added to you power panel. I purchased 1 additional plug-in module and hope to never use it. My install was by an electrician for several hundred dollars but if you are handy with electrical equipment just add a 30-amp 2-pole breaker to your panel, hook up and you are good to go. I purchased this because it had a high review rating because it protects both 110-volt legs to ground and across the 220-volt lines for three-way protection. There are 3 blue indicator lights to show power is on and 3 green lights to show protection circuit is functional. This product also has a protection guarantee should a voltage surge occur and cause damage. Only need 1 unit but If I needed to buy this again I would.
