    • Inexpensive Alternative to OEM Product
If you keep your Aerogarden baskets and plastic covers, these are an inexpensive way to grow vegetables and herbs using your own seeds. We started four herb plants a little more than a week ago and all have germinated. It's worth pointing out that the seeds we used were about 6 years old That's actually better than the original salad greens pods we received with our unit, where only four out of six pods germinated. (Aerogarden replaced the two duds with no questions asked, so kudos to them.) ... show more

This product is a bag of small spongy cone shaped plant starters that are specifically meant to be soaked in completely liquid growing mediums. You can place a seed or sprout carefully into the hole on the wide and of the sponge, and then soak the cone in the nutritious water in your hydroponic setup. The sponge absorbs the liquid and keeps it at the root of the plant to give it nutrition, while the sunlight above gives it growth. When the roots outgrow their small hole in the cone, it will break away or you can easily remove it without damaging the roots. The cones have a feeling of a dry rotted sponge, perhaps one of those dehydrated discs of dirt, but they take water properly and distribute it well among the seeds and sprouts. Overall this is a very simple but specific product that can be very useful in hydroponic starters. I started by placing wheat berry seeds in each hole, as well as some cuttings from an existing house plant. The roots grew and the plant material expanded after just a few days in pure water. I am going to be using these to get plants ready to go in my hydroponic tower where they will grow with nothing but nutrified water. Overall this is a very simple and unique way for a gardener to expand into the world of hydroponics. If you already have everything else you need, try throwing a few seeds in here to sprout, then you can either replant them in soil in the cone, or you can go ahead and continue with the hydroponic process. It is worth it to at least buy one box of this to test it out, maybe you will learn a new way to grow your plants efficiently! ... show more

Not much to say here - they are the typical sponges you use in a hydroponic growing system. I found that they were a little bit smaller (shorter, narrower) than the ones that came with my system, but they did fit in OK, and once they got wet, they swelled up and worked. Again, when wet they were not quite as large as my original ones, but the seeds germinated and I got viable plants. Who is this for? - People who own hydroponic growing systems and need new sponges. Pros: - They work Cons: - Might be too small for some systems ... show more

    • Works as expected in my Aerogarden.
We always start most of our garden food plants inside in our Aerogardens (we have 3) using the seed starting trays so we go through a lot of starter sponges. We plant tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers (note give the cucumbers a little extra space), tomatillos, and just about every herb known to man (well except anise...yuck). We used these this year in one Aerogarden and one of our others had the factory sponges. They are a little denser than the factory ones which is nice when putting them in the pod and putting seeds in them. As far as growing every set of seeds we put in them sprouted. We waited until they were about 3-4 inches tall and then transplanted them (sponge and all) to Solo cups with actual soil in them. After a few weeks of this we planted them in the ground. Every one of the plants is now 2+ feet tall (except the cucumbers). I would give these an A grade. The seem to grow just as well as the factory ones but some of them are a touch small so you have to be careful when inserting in the seed pod grid. I will be purchasing more of these for next year. ... show more

I’ve been a diehard Aerogarden user for almost ten years now, but the cost of the sponges and baskets hurts. The official Aerogarden sponges were hard to find during the pandemic, so I tried DIYing sponges, trimming down cube shaped hydroponic sponges, etc, but they were always more work than savings. These grow sponges are the correct size and shape for the Aerogarden - woo! I use a basket to trace circles on large blank labels to make the sticky tops and replace any lost domes with condiment cups from my take out orders. ... show more

I haven't had these long enough to know how durable. These seem to be same quality as the other ones I have bought. I have them started and watching to see sprout. So far so good, I will update review if issues come up
