  • Space debris, asteroids, and alien attack...oh my!
Format: Kindle
I spent the entire night reading this book. Yes, it is very technical, and I felt like the dumbest person in the room compared to these characters, but the story fascinated me. Initially a North Korean shuttle pilot shows off his piloting skills to frighten Japanese ISS (International Space Station) crew, and the net result was that he was not the hot dog he thought he was. He crashes into the station and starts a chain of death and destruction. The debris from the damaged station orbits the earth and destroys satellites as it travels, adding to the debris cloud in a Kessler-type debris storm. There are survivors on the ISS, but they won't be able to last long. Re-supply for both ISS and Moon Base Veritas is impossible as long as the debris storm continues. Ultimately ISS is destroyed by the debris. A supply ship, assembled from every relic still held by space museums and a few other bits and bobs, is destroyed by the debris on its attempt to get relief to Veritas. The entire satellite array overhead is destroyed, impacting earth industry, communications, security, and more. Online banking, GPS navigation, and ever so much more goes away for the time being. Somebody has to figure out how to clear the debris cloud that is whirling around earth like the Great Pacific Gyre. The Pan National team of scientists originate from a humanitarian effort to rescue orphans worldwide, place them in foster homes and educate them, giving them the goal of improving humanity's way of life, building futures that these adults make real. These Lost Boys and Girls are now a tribe of their own, clannish, but effective. Each of them select a specialty, and one has been enthralled with mining the asteroids all of his life. This has to be set aside until the Kessler cloud is solved. Or does it? Essentially this is a story about problem solving. The problems keep getting bigger and bigger. I can't wait for the next volume, and wish I had discovered this book a year from now so that I could move right into the next stage of the story. ... show more

  • Solid series starter
Format: Kindle
As the initial entry of a future series I expected some issues to be left unresolved and, while there were, I did not find them to be overtly noticeable nor did they effect the cohesion of the story. I found the characters to be relatable and interesting and the exciting plot kept me guessing. The only slight (a very small slight, at that) would be the detail of the hard science involved. It appeals to a large segment of the reader pool and is necessary in order to avoid going over it in detail for future works but it did slow the story down for a few pages. ... show more

  • Great science fiction, rooted in current facts
Format: Kindle
The story kept me captivated from start to finish. It is fast paced with plenty of twists. I enjoyed the characters very much as I've not run across protagonists quite like these - they're unique and interesting. And with the scifi story not so far removed from today's science facts and today's geopolitical realities there's some very thought provoking things to mull over. All together quite enjoyable. ... show more

  • Interesting for future possibilities
Format: Kindle
I recommend the book to ardent sci-fi fans. It was interesting with sufficient real facts to make it all possible. The story was a bit difficult to follow at times due to the scientific jargon but was nevertheless gripping, especially towards the end.

  • A wonderful, imaginative book so realistic you forget it is sci-fi
Format: Audiobook
Rarely have a listened to a book that made me wish my hour-long morning commute wasn’t quite so short. I am not a sci-fi fan so when someone suggested I read Impact, I was fairly certain I would struggle to get into it. I was wrong. I purchased the audio-book version and by the end of chapter one, I was hooked. The characters are well developed and so personable and authentic they felt like new friends I wanted to find out more about. The science was quite technical, but I felt like the author did a pretty good job of explaining complex problems and their equally complex solutions without diving so deep as to lose those of us lacking the intellect of a NASA engineer. Mark Owen makes his imagined world seem so plausible and so relevant to our own, at times I forgot it was supposed to take place in the future. You do not have to love sci-fi to love this book. You just need to love a good story that leaves you waiting anxiously for the sequel…… and wish you didn’t have to wait for some future person to invent “wine sticks”. ... show more

  • Dry and impersonal telling of a cool story
Format: Kindle
As the name suggests, this near-future novel deals with an impact incident striking Earth and the global response to it. Many important players from industry and political spheres are involved. Great advancements are made and much is learned about the universe and our own existence in the process. And if that summary seems dry and impersonal to you, I’ve done my job in setting the tone for this story. Unfortunately, the incredibly interesting plot is drowned in lengthy scientific explanations and explanation-heavy prose. Very little dialogue is present, and even that is limited almost entirely to yet more scientific explanation. While there are many strong and engaging characters and awesome plot twists, it’s hard to get excited about any of it. This is the first in a series about a group of intellectuals that will likely be involved in many terrific adventures, I just won’t be able to invest in them after mining this impenetrable asteroid. Thank you to the publisher and Book Sirens for my free copy. These opinions are my own. ... show more

  • Good writing, good premise, good characters.
Format: Paperback
While I am not a sci-fi reader- I think this is written well. I like the characters & their conflicts & triumphs. It’s a good reminder for us about friendships and commitment. Good exploration of doing things for the good of all & our future on this planet we call home. Interesting that many of the events are not that far fetched for current world issues. Author definitely has set this up for a series and possible movies. ... show more

  • Interesting characters, gripping story
Format: Paperback
Pithy philosophical statements, many from the journal of Dr. Kohlrabi Trust, which serve as epigraphs to each chapter, balance the countdown to impending doom in Impact. I found a welcome rhythm in taking a moment to ponder these thought-provoking statements before jumping back into the story of the top secret, technical problem-solving efforts to keep a rogue comet and it’s attending space debris from careening toward and obliterating Earth. The characters taking on this problem range from creatively brilliant to a tad socially stunted to efficiently strong (I want Laura Jasper to be my president!) to wisely collaborative. I grew attached to many of the characters, and hope to see them in sequels. I hope NOT to see the crisis portrayed in Impact, but was amazed how close to scientific reality some of this science fiction is, thanks to the author’s notes at the end of the book. ... show more
