Description

AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER A man must fight for his planet against impossible odds when gamers from Earth attempt to remotely annihilate it in this epic, fast-paced novel from the New York Times bestselling author of the smash-hit Dungeon Crawler Carl. All colonist Oliver Lewis ever wanted to do was run the family ranch with his sister, maybe play a gig or two with his band, and keep his family’s aging fleet of intelligent agriculture bots ticking as long as possible. He figures it will be a good thing when the transfer gate finally opens all the way and restores instant travel and full communication between Earth and his planet, New Sonora. But there’s a complication. Even though the settlers were promised they’d be left in peace, Earth’s government now has other plans. The colossal Apex Industries is hired to commence an “eviction action.” But maximizing profits will always be Apex’s number one priority. Why spend money printing and deploying AI soldiers when they can turn it into a game? Why not charge bored Earthers for the opportunity to design their own war machines and remotely pilot them from the comfort of their homes? The game is called Operation Bounce House. Oliver and his friends soon find themselves fighting for their lives against machines piloted by gamers who’ve paid a premium for the privilege. With the help of an old book from his grandfather and a bucket of rusty parts, Oliver is determined to defend the only home he’s ever known. Read more

  • ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Format: Kindle
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This is an amazing standalone LitRPG sci-fi novel! On the colony planet of New Sonora, farmer Oliver is having a tough morning after getting drunk and breaking up with his girlfriend. Things get even worse when he finds mechs in his yard trying to murder everyone on the planet. Oliver, his sister Lulu, best friend Sam, girlfriend Rosita, and the hive queen robot Rodger Rodger must band together with the rest of their town as Earth enters them into the ‘Operation Bounce House’ game. Earth-based streamers purchase mechs to rid the planet of “terrorists,” a.k.a. the innocent farmers and settlers. I loved this book. Travis Baldree and Jeff Hays’ audio narration is phenomenal. The story was engaging and wasn’t heavy on the LitRPG elements until building toward the end, so I never felt lost or out of my depth with the mechanics. There were some serious allusions to current events and a lot of commentary on AI and its dangers, but also in a way its benefits. I think if you like political books you would enjoy the message, and if that’s not your thing it’s still just a fun ride. The humor was spot on while also having serious and heartbreaking moments. Dinniman knocked it out of the park once again. This story wrapped up nicely while still leaving the door open for more in this universe. I can’t wait to see what he comes up with next! • This is what good science fiction looks like!
Format: Kindle
This is a good book. Worth every penny and I would recommend it to anyone and will. I gave it four stars because it is not The Moon is A Harsh Mistress or the Uplift Wars, but it is still stellar. The story explores themes of xenophobia, what comprises sentience, toxic internet culture, and what it means to live a good life. It does so in a fast paced environment that is littered with laugh out loud dialogue. In summary this is not just a fun, action packed read; it is real literature that will make you a better person for having read it. I hope they make it into a movie. I highly recommend it to anyone. ... show more

  • Remember Rule Ten
Format: Kindle
I am still in an after glow after reading this. This book is a meditation on what it is to be a sentient being. It is a critique on humanity. I wish more people alive could read this to understand. The story is good. Oliver is a very straight forward character and he needs to be, because he is the lens we see everything through. The struggle, Operation Bounce House, is a platform for the world we live in, and have lived in, and probably will live in. I look forward to reading this once a year, to be entertained, be reminded of rule ten and to see more of what I missed the last times around. ... show more

  • Rules are suspended during perimeter defense mode
Format: Hardcover
I’ll admit up front I’m already a bit biased in this review because of my appreciation for Dungeon Crawler Carl. Operation Bounce House is a fantastic read with plenty of light hearted fun and heart string tugging moments throughout. Matt Dinniman shines in his ability to make characters resonate with his readers and here is no exception. The snapshots of life woven between the main story paint a picture of community and how perspective is such an important thing to keep in mind as we go about our lives and how we interact with others. Do yourself a favor and grab this book before you receive a frowny face on your daily behavioral chart! ... show more

  • My Thoughts on the Novel, Operation Bounce House, 2/18/2026…
Format: Kindle
I really enjoyed this book, especially the buildup to the end. On the way, I was up and down about how I felt about it. Not that it dragged—it definitely did not—but at these times I wondered what the author was up to. And I had some prejudices that came into play as well. Before I proceed, allow me to mention that I’ve learned a few things about Earth, space exploration, and the possible habitation of humans on other planets in the galaxy. I found out that because of the distance from the sun, the position of the moon, and other factors, this is why the Earth is hospitable to human life. If another planet is found somewhere else in the galaxy that has the same prerequisites, humans can live there, as well. (Thank you, Samantha Meares!) And that is where the premise of Operation Bounce House, and its setting, the planet New Sonora, comes in. Needless to say, my initial prejudices against science fiction negatively colored my reading of the novel, almost to a large degree. When I learned what I learned, I found OBH that much more enjoyable. In a nutshell, a corporation recruits gamers to invade New Sonora, declaring the human inhabitants there terrorists. This book is about that struggle and what a band of humans planetside had to do to survive against this attack. I highly recommend this book. Especially now, since I have a better understanding and appreciation of science fiction. (Thanks again, Sam!) ... show more
