Description

In the eleventh Woods Cop Mystery, Conservation Officer Grady Service is on unpaid suspension until spring, but—stubborn as ever—continues to patrol the Mosquito Wilderness, along with his complicated past. Service is off-duty through July 4 following a season in which Service and his unofficial partner (lifelong poacher Limpy Allerdyce) cleaned up on deer-law violators and poachers, closing more big cases in two weeks than most officers solve in their careers. His reward? He is summoned to Lansing, told he is on unpaid suspension, his badge, firearms, and truck taken. The rationale for the action is fuzzy, a questioning of his using a lifelong lawbreaker as partner. For the first time, Service has no duties and feels like he has been beached unfairly. But voluntarily on patrol, he begins to sense political shenanigans –an old foe lurking somewhere in the shadows. He could retire, but decides to fight, and enlists help from Allerdyce and fellow game warden and Vietnam Veteran Luticious Treebone. Clues accumulate: It seems someone wants to illegally commercialize the Mosquito. Grady realizes if he doesn’t stop it, the wilderness will be destroyed. The tight story unfolds like a poker game, with one side bluffing and raising, while the other side keeps calling and keeping the game on until there is a final showdown. Read more

  • Great series of books
Great story telling, lots of local references. I am from the upper Peninsula and enjoyed his description of my fellow citizens as hard working, maybe somewhat crazy group of people that live and work in the UP.

  • Great Read
I have read all of the books in the series and each one is better than the last. Great story line. Each book is an adventure in itself. Michigan Michigan, Pure Michigan I Love you and I’ll say this again. Your seasons they may scare some people away The rest of us locals are determined to stay. The smell of our Springtime with those random showers Wash away snows and make room for the flowers. The summer heat follows to fill out the trees The crops will all grow in the warm summer breeze. Your shorelines will surely call us to play We love your bridge, and to cross it, we’ll pay. As we head North the forests they thicken The campfires burn, our relaxation kicks in. We hunt, we fish, we run the trails We race our boats and hoist our sails. Mountains hidden...on the North shore They hide the mines from decades before. Waterfalls, wildlife, mushrooms galore The fall colors bring tourists from downstate and more. The pasties and brew pubs will create some chatter The smoked salmon and whitefish are served by the platter. The Sault Locks will bring ships from so many lands To fill with the goods from our Pure Michigan. The summers are shorter the more North you go The shipwrecks ten thousand in our winds and snow. From Sandals to Sorrels from swimsuits to down We tolerate seasons and we frequently frown. We bag spare clothes to travel, all seasons are in it If you don’t like the weather you just wait for five minutes. Michigan, Pure Michigan I Love you and I’ll say this again. Your seasons they may scare some people away The true Michiganders are determined to stay. Scott Wolbers for Mr Heywood ... show more

  • Review of Bad Optics book
I’ve read all of the Woods Cop Mysteries. This was a good story although maybe a little long. And, the end seemed a little abrupt? I would have liked to see a little more vengeful retribution unloaded by Grady! Sayin 😁👍

  • Great book as usual
Story was on track with page one. The characters of this series just get better each time. The only downside was the ending. It just plain wrapped up to quickly leaving the reader hanging. Can’t wait for the next book.

  • Awesome Book.
This is a great series! Would love to see it as a series on Amazon Prime! It would definitely rank up there with Bosch! Going to read the rest of Mr. Heywood's books.
