  • A wonderful classic in deplorable condition
The recording itself -- music and performers -- is excellent. It is without question one of the very best of the early-music albums recorded during the revival of the 1970s. I bought this LP to replace the exact same album I had lent to a friend many years ago who never returned it. The one I lent out had a few scratches here and there, but otherwise was in very good condition. The sound fidelity was virtually the same as the day I bought it brand-new, when it had been newly released. I was particularly looking forward to hearing a beautiful lute/recorder rendition of "De tous biens playne," which is one of my all-time favorites. It has been recorded by other artists since then, but never with the same haunting beauty. I hadn't heard this rendition in years, and I was eager to hear it again. However. The vendor described this particular used LP as being in "excellent" condition, which makes me wonder what the vendor would qualify as deplorable. That is how I would describe its condition. Frankly, this one sounds like it was played repeatedly on a turntable fitted with a sewing needle. The grooves are substantially worn, and the sound quality is dramatically compromised. I had to turn the sound all the way up, and even then, the music had a ghostly, faraway sound to it with significant fuzziness and hissing. It is so unbearable to listen to that I have played it only once, then sadly packed it away. I guess I'll just have to see if that friend still has my old one. Or hope that someone at MCA Records will digitally remaster this wonderful classic and release it on CD. ... show more
