Update November 2024 I bought this door in 2011 and it's still holdong up perfectly. Some of my wonderful dogs have come and gone over the years but during their lifetime they used this door to acess my remote area. Few things i have purchased over the years has withstood what this door has endured and still remain in perfect condition. I highly recommend this door to anyone in search of a quality product. First of all, I got a great deal on the door. It was $40 (with shipping) and was advertised as used but when I got it it appeared to be unopened with original packaging inside. I previously had a cheaper and much smaller (15") door mounted in a living room wall. I wanted a larger door because I have a 78 lb dog who is getting up in age and was having difficulty getting through the smaller door. INSTALLTION; Installing this door in a wall to replace the existing one was a bit of a challenge since I had to use a car jack to separate the studs so it would fit. I placed blocks top and bottom of dog door frame to keep the opening the required width. I did manage to install it with surprisingly minimal effort. I mounted both the eternal and internal frames using long wood screws into the side studs and the security seems adequate since the locking plate that cover the door is on the inside and securely attached. I didn't buy the optional wall mount kit that's advertised because I felt it was overpriced and really unnecessary since it was framed inside by the studs and blocks and the appearance is good. APPEARANCE; The installed unit is attractive with a very nice clear flap on the inside frame. It's like having a floor level window and securely closes with the magnetic strips. The security panel that slides down over the opening through side tracks is beefy plastic and has a release latch near the top for easy unlocking and removal. USE; I have two dogs. One is the previously mentioned 78 lb older dog and the other is a 6 yr old 22 lb dog. Both come and go through the door with only little effort. I was initially concerned that the smaller dog would have difficulty with the big flap and magnets but that didn't happen. In conclusion I must say that I really like the door. Of course my opinion is slightly biased since I paid just a fraction of the full retail price. If one is willing to put in a small to moderate amount of effort (depending on the location of the door) to install it then they can avoid more costly professional installation. Yes, it may take more time then advertised but it's not that difficult. I gave it 4 stars only because I feel that the full advertised price is a bit excessive for what you get. I'll probably update this report after a good trial period. UPDATE Feb.20,2012: I really like the pet door and have no complaints. The plastic flap has remained clear and in great condition along with the rest of the components that came with the door. Both dogs use it with ease. Would still highly recommend this product (Yeah, I still think the retail price is a bit excessive!) ... show more

  • Very Nice Dog Door But Might Not Be Great For Small Cats
Size: Super Large
I got this pet door about two week ago and installed it easily enough. I used it inside my house as a door for my pets to go in and out of my bedroom while I'm asleep or whatever while allowing the door to stay closed. Right now I have 1 big dog and 2 small cats. The pet door seems well made. The magnet strip at the bottom is pretty powerful and makes a loud click when it reattaches. It keeps the cold air out and the warm air in pretty good as far as a 1 flap pet door goes. The sliding door has a click in place plastic lock when shut all the way down too. All in all I really like the design. I mostly bought this with my 1 year old dog in mind but I figured my 2 year old cats would be able to use this just the same. My dog didn't understand how to use the pet door when I first installed it. He just looked at me on the other side thinking it was a window or something. I tried to show him that it opens and closes. He didn't seem to like the clicking noise of the magnet reattaching to the strip when I opened and closed it. So I took some clear duct tape and taped the flap open so he could get use to walking in and out of it. After a day or two I lowered the flap further and further so he would get use to that being there. He didn't seem to mind the flap after afew more days. Once I took the tape off and the flap was all the way down using the magnets again he still didn't want to go through the pet door. So I used dog treats but still he just looked at me and whined or scratched at the door. Finally I got some packaged meat out and he didn't seem to focus on anything but getting to me so he could get some meat. He finally used the pet door with the flap all the way down and I lead him back and forth through it for about an hour. Now he uses it no problem. I was really hoping my 2 year old cats would just figure it out and use the pet door because well they are cats and are pretty clever in general but alas they just can't seem to figure it out. I think the fact that they are so small and the magnet is so strong as well as the flap is pretty thick and heavy that they can't get past. It may just take time. One of my cats keeps trying to get past it but he gets his head stuck between the flap and pet door and keeps backing out. If one of my cats figures it out the other one should learn by watching I would guess. I would recommend this pet door to anyone wanting a pet door for mostly big dogs and maybe big cats (think raccoon sized). Not to say small cats can't use it but mine definitely are having a hard time. Like I said I've only had it for two weeks. It might just take time. Edit: Well it took 2 months but both of my cats figured out how to use this pet door. They use their paws and push their faces against the sides of the flap enough to slip through. ... show more

  • Good dog door!
Size: Medium
This is a very durable metal dog door. Most are plastic and I wanted the metal one to eliminate the risk of it breaking with dog's "launching" out the dog door. The door has an all metal frame and a heavy duty plastic flap for the door that has a magnet on the bottom to keep it closed. I seems to seal fairly well so we can keep the door open without losing much air conditioning or heat. It also has a hard pvc insert that you can put in to keep the dogs outside. Installation - The biggest challenge is cutting the hole in the door - I used a jigsaw, but make sure you have the right kind of blade - my door was wood encased in metal so I needed a metal saw blade. If you do it accurately, then you don't need to drill as big of holes for the nuts and bolts that secure the door. Installation directions are decent, but the template could be improved. The only issue was that I ordered a white color door and received a silver colored one that wouldn't match my door. Amazon offered to send me another IF I returned the first one. I told them that I really didn't really want to return it due to the hastle and I could really just paint it. They also offered me a credit (for paint and my time) if i kept it and chose to paint it. I chose to keep it and paint it. Not bad and the door ended up only costing me half as much even though I had to paint it which wasn't too bad. I would HIGHLY recommend this dog door! You will not be disappointed. Very durable and looks really good. I am happy with my purchase! ... show more

  • Good Door, Good Value
Size: Extra Large
I purchased this pet door to replace a tiny broken one in my backdoor. I have two Boxers, one medium sized (~45 lbs) and one growing puppy (~40 lbs) who were both able to JUST squeeze into the old door. My worry was that once the puppy grows to full size, he'll attempt to squeeze through the door and get stuck. As previously mentioned, this door was installed on a standard, non-solid wood door leading from my kitchen to the backyard. Installation took approximately an hour, and that's with several breaks in between because my drill kept dying. 75% of the time was spent cutting the hole and shaving it down just so for a snug fit. Putting the door in itself took less than 10 minutes. The screws take a couple minutes to match up on either side of the door but they're certainly long enough. If you find that they aren't, your door is probably too thick. The flap is clear as glass (before any dog nose and slobber juice) so it's a good thing it's only for my backyard or else any outsider would be able to peer inside and see the whole place. I was also mildly disappointed that the slide-in flap cover was plastic. It does the job but I feel like if my dog is determined enough to get inside while it's on, he'll crash through and shatter it in a thousand pieces. I live in Southern California and the door is in a corner of the house where I wouldn't have to worry about draft problems, so I can't comment on that. And as the video shows, it took a few minutes for my pup to figure out the new door, but now both dogs (including my other one who is disabled) pass through it with ease. ... show more

  • Must have for pet owners
Size: Super Large
Perfect dog door for my 108lb Rottweiler. We have had it installed for about a year now and my only complaint is that the sides of the "flap" do let quite a bit of cold/hot air in during the seasons, but this has been my experience with all dog doors. The bottom magnet works amazingly, and the price was excellent for and XL door. The included "cover" or locking thing is great however, we rarely use it. Cutting the metal door was the hardest part and we of course measured twice before we cut. Used some commercial grade sealant around it after putting it in and its been sure functional and was overall easy to install. ... show more

  • Works great after 3 years
Size: Super Large
This is now 3 years old and still working great! I have to scrub the door clean every so often and it looks like new. The slide in guard works good from one side but they can pop it right off coming from the other direction.

Size: Super Large
Wish we would have taken the leap and bought this years ago as it would have saved us from having to replace carpet from senior, diabetic accidents however, we are thoroughly please with this purchase. The original door flap was warped but not worth sending back for a replacement so we dealt with it. This was fairly easy to install however installing in an aluminum door with a reciprocating saw proved a little more difficult than I envisioned so it's slightly crooked but serves it's purposed. Our lab caught on right away however, our boxer is a little more timid so it took a little coaxing but within a couple days, she had it down. Now they go in and out all day long. We had an indoor cat but since we purchased this, we have a wanderer that comes to visit when he's hungry or wants a belly rub...yes, he's neutered, has been vaccinated and was not declawed and no he doesn't wander very far, he just likes the freedom to do so. Great product & price. If you live in an area that often has extreme temperatures, you might go for the Ruff Weather model. ... show more
