EWP14OPN Exotic Wood Piccolo Acoustic Guitar Natural. Smaller scale instruments have increased in popularity over the past few years, because not only do students seem to be starting younger than ever, but also the easy-to- transport guitar has become recognized as an excellent companion for the weary traveler. From the on-the-go businessperson who needs a guitar that can fit in a plane’s overhead compartment, to the happy wanderer just looking to animate his sojourn with a song, the compact travel guitar can be an uplifting addition to any expedition. The EWP14OPN is a 1/3-size, steel string Piccolo acoustic guitar. Similar in scale to a Baritone ukulele (17”), the EWP14 sports an EW style cutaway body. The top, back, and sides are made of ovangkol, a wood found in Western Africa, known for its beautiful figuring and rosewood-like tone. An Open Pore Natural finish allows the body to resonate more freely for improved tone and projection. Other features include an abalone rosette, rosewood fretboard, bridge and chrome die-cast tuners. To optimize string tension, intonation, and tone, the EWP14 is tuned in the key of A (A, D, G, C, E, A), up a fourth from standard tuning.

This is my third guitar since I started playing in 2016 and I love it! It took a little getting used to going from a guitar with standard tuning - imagine you're playing a standard guitar with a capo on the 5th fret. I am a lady with smaller fingers, so that might help, as the width of the neck and the space between frets is noticeably small. It has definitely taken a little getting used to, but the sound is lovely and it fits well with my singing range (Alto-Mezzo Soprano). I think if you temper your expectations, remember that it's not going to sound like a full size guitar - they called it a piccolo for a reason, it's smaller than I imagined. However, it's very well made and all of my friends who play beautifully and some professionally, have tried it out and pronounced it an awesome little guitar! Lovely matte finish, the ovangkol wood grain is beautiful and feels so nice. I will note that it takes a week or so for the strings to relax into staying in tune. In that time I re-tuned it daily. But it's now staying in tune very well. Yesterday, I played it while sitting it the front passenger seat of a car - perfect for a road trip!!! LOVE IT! This is nothing but a child's toy. The pictures are accurate, but not revealing of what you are actually getting until you play it. The guitar has a tiny fret board and sounds like a small child's toy, failing to stay in tune. I see nothing about it that gives me grounds to return it, but I really SHOULD have checked it out in person first. It is WAY over priced for what you get. This should have retailed for $20.00! ... show more

I rated NOT for beginners since, being a non-standard string spacing and short scale, any muscle memory gained would not translate well to a full-size fingerboard. It's a fun little instrument with an interesting and pleasant voice. It sounds a bit like an autoharp to me when strummed (not at all like my fine guitars capo'd at the fifth fret). LOTS of sustain (much more than a ukulele). String spacing is really tight, almost like a standard mandolin, so it takes a bit of getting accustomed to. Not quite perfect intonation (but, remember it is $199). Have not played with different strings yet. ... show more

    • Versatile travel guitar with a beautiful voice.

After spending a few weeks now with my Ibanez piccolo guitar, I can recommend this punchy little songbird without any reservation. At first, I was disappointed by a few small cosmetic flaws I noticed (spotty body finish, glue residue on tuners and neck joint, scrapes on plastic body binding), but my disappointment quickly disappeared once I started to play it. What a voice! It's hard to describe what it sounds like; not exactly like a mandolin, yet not exactly like a guitar either. It's in a class of its own, and it sounds beautiful with a sustain that goes on forever. And it has plenty of volume, perhaps not enough for a concert hall, but enough to fill your living room when you give your next party recital. I must admit, however, that it might not be the ideal instrument for everyone. The nut is very narrow, which places the strings very close together. To play it well, you must be able to adapt your technique. Having previously played ukuleles with four strings spaced widely apart, this was at first a challenge for me...but challenges such as this makes one a better player in the end. The payoff from this effort will be the creation of beautiful music that this unique little guitar is capable of making. In terms of versatility, this piccolo guitar deserves 10 stars. Tuned to ADGCEA, I can still play my ukulele chords (low G) on the top four strings as I gradually pick up the chord shapes for the guitar. I've already arranged a few songs for both ukulele and guitar; while it's confusing at first, it's manageable (just don't play them back to back :) ). The main point here is that you can play both ukulele and guitar chords on this piccolo guitar, and this versatility opens the door to entire libraries of songs and music written for guitar, as well as arrangements which you may already have for the ukulele. One final plus to mention about this piccolo guitar: steel strings. It comes from the manufacturer pre-strung with D'Addario Phosphor Bronze Extra Lights. While I've been playing fluorocarbons on all of my ukuleles, IMHO there is nothing in comparison to the sound of steel string acoustics in general and on this instrument in particular. Depending on the type of music and how its performed, this little piccolo guitar can generate sounds that are downright haunting-- e.g. try playing "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" fingerstyle on this and you'll know what I mean. I've been playing folk tunes and some classical pieces so far, but I can imagine this guitar would be in its perfect element voicing Celtic music. ... show more

This guitar is absolutely stunning. The smaller body produces such a beautiful sound. I love the look of the exotic wood finish and am extremely impressed with the overall quality of craftsmanship. What a piece of art. I have read some negative reviews in regards to the narrow fretboard and see how this could create difficulties with hitting clean chords. I have not personally experienced this issue due to the small size of my hands, and the petite size is what initially drew me to this instrument. I liked how the guitar was strung directly from the box and the only adjustment I made was when tuning. I am in no way a professional guitarist, therefore my opinion may not be as beneficial to some as other reviews. ... show more

For the size, the guitar has a good volume and a lovely mandolin plucking tone. I love playing it. Very light weight for travel! I had to send it back to get it replaced because the neck was cracked right at the nut. The nut however was still glued in place so it must have cracked before it was assembled? Quality control must have missed it some how. Despite having to ship it back and place another order I am pleased with the guitar. I'm hoping to take it with me to Nepal for some trekking. ... show more
