The media could not be loaded. For a child of eight, this starter microscope set is ideal. It comes with a microscope, a petri dish, five viewing slides with specimens, a test tube, tweezers, and many other tools. Even better, it comes with a zip-up storage bag case that is ideal for keeping it stored while not in use. If you need to carry the bag anywhere, it has a handle to make that easier. You must plug the microscope into an electrical outlet in order to use it. The cord is a bit short, so if your outlet is far from your desk, you might require an extension cord as well. The lights on the bottom are unaffected by the microscope being connected in. You actually need to buy three regular batteries for those to work. I wish they had been included in the bundle because you have to go to the store before you can use all of this device's features. I really like a feature that wasn't available when I was a kid using a microscope. It includes a phone holder so you can utilize your phone to view the object on a larger screen, record videos, and even magnify it. Someone had gifted my daughter a cheap toy version of one of these and you couldn't see anything so I searched Amazon for one that really works. This one had good reviews so I got it for her for Christmas. Only complaint is that it has a cord to plug it in so we assumed that would turn on all lights. Not the case. You need 3 double a batteries for the bottom light. Little frustrating and doesn't make much sense. For now we can use the top light for non transparent slides, but the rest of the slides are no good till we can get batteries. What we did get to see took some fiddling around to make it work cause we dont know what we are doing, but we eventually figured it out and my daughter was quite excited to be able to really see the slides. I bought her a box of tons of pre done slides. She's having a lot of fun. Cant wait to get batteries so we can see the other slides. Definitely recommend. ... show more

Gave as a gift to my 12 year old grandson, it claims it is wrapped and ready to gift but it isn't. He does enjoys using it but seems to have a hard time getting it into focus. Carrying case is nice, it makes it easy to pack up and store after use and to take on the go. Seems like a nice microscope for beginners his age but wouldn't recommend for the very young scientists. ... show more

This microscope is a must have for observing different particles. It is perfect for beginners and my 10 year old was easily able to learn how to use this.
