  • HP Slate 7 in works ok, but I wouldn't buy it again.
HP sent me an email ad offering free mobile data for life on the T-Mobile network. I looked at the cost and thought this might be good for the occasional use. The data is free for life, but limited 200MB of data per month. The first unit I received soon developed hardware problems. If I left it charging too long the screen would over-drive and be difficult to read and not work with the touch-screen. HP, to their credit, gave me absolutely no hassle and sent out a replacement unit, but it did cost me shipping. That said, I'm not very impressed with the unit. It seems slower than my wife's Samsung tablet and doesn't work with the USB on the go USB drive that I've got. After I made the purchase I read on the T-Mobile site that I could have bought a Samsung product from them with the same free data for life deal. I wish I would have seen that offer sooner, but I'm also not that impressed with the T-Mobile service. I frequently have to re-boot the device to get it to recognize the T-Mobile carrier and when I use the T-Mobile service it's really slow. At least that's been my experience in the Dayton Ohio area. I get much faster response using my Samsung Note II on the AT&T network with service through Consumer Cellular. ... show more

  • Would reccomend for a basic 7" tablet with 4G capability
After charging the tablet up for a few hours I powered it on and turned on the Data option, opened the web browser and was greeted with the T Mobile website. Proceeding carefully I navigated thru it, only opting for the 200MB Free data plan (they try to get you to sign up for Plans but you need go past them). You fill out an email address you want to use with them and they send you your confirmation information. In less than 2 minutes I was on with 4G ! - with 200MBs a month for life/for free, the free 4G is worth the purchase not sure why some people have said they weren't able to get it. Using the WIFI mode I let the tablet run updates to the system and added some apps I use to save the 4G data for times when I am away from WIFI spots. I did a whole day of work and streamed a couple of movies in the evening and it still was going after 12 hours on one charge, so battery life on the first couple of weeks of use has been very good. The front-self pic 2MP camera needs decent light to give good pictures, the rear 5MP camera works well indoors with good lighting - about on par with a typical smart phones abilities. I have found for my use it performs as fast I need for doing email, web browsing, writing documents, and using the GPS navigation/maps apps. I am not a gamer (not even candy crush type games) so I can't comment on how or what it can or can't play. The speakers are fairly weak in volume so I just use headphones unless I am in my quiet office listening. The music plays fine without any problems and internet radio is good too. I travel with this and so the reason for the small 7" size choice, fits well in my hand while the screen size isn't so small as to make it impractical to use or watch. All in all for the money spent this fills my needs better than some of the other brands offerings which had less memory, no SD card slot, poorer screen resolution, seemingly a flimsier case, and of course no 4G option, for even more money. I am happy with it and will update later if I should have any issues or comments in the future. ... show more

  • ElCheapo Only Worth Buying for the T-Mo Service
This is an obsolete device, slow with poor build quality. I accidentally did a 1" scratch on the front glass which developed into an full top-to-bottom crack in two days(!). HP support refused to replace the digitiser. I have had 6 tablets so far from Acer and none used such cheap glass -- none cracked and I dropped some on the floor Please note that T-Mo binds the uSIM to the tablet and you won't be able to use it in a different device when your tablet meets its early demise. ... show more

  • It is not Nexus, but works OK
I bought a HP Slate 7 (3400US) with free T-Mobile 200 MB/month. The device itself seems reasonable for the money. Do not expect it to perform like a Nexus 7. We use it for simple games, browsing, email, music, it performs well. I use it over wifi mostly, and even with good internet speed sometimes is slow to render websites. I watched Netflix HD movie, and was happy with the performance. You must have broadband service to get HD quality, obviously. The problem with this device is that there are not too many accessories (eg. a decent case). I bought a cheap one, it is clunky, but seems to do its job. I added a total of three users to this device, and each gets to customize it without affecting other users. This is important for me, so my personal information is not accessible to other users, and hopefully you can control what apps my young kids play. JellyBean 4.2.2 Andrioid version is pre-installed, and dont expect to get 4.4 (kitkat) any time soon. HP is slow in pushing these. No wonder they are loosing money. Note: This does NOT come with a headphone, but that is not a big issue for me. T-mobile customer service sucked big time, they had not clue about this free offer. On the day I received the tablet, I was playing with the settings and got locked out of the device "SIM disabled. PUK lock required to unlock" or something similar message came up. Telephone support was useless, they directed me to go to store. Store person wanted me to buy a one month data plan so she could activate my tablet with T-mobile. After back and forth, I was able to get a new SIM card, as the SIM itself was locked out. I inserted the new SIM, and tablet started to guide me through the activation process with T-mobile. T-mobile did not ask me for a credit card, sweet! Next day, the tablet said "NO service" and I have live in this area for many years, and I know there is service here. I called T-mobile and once again was disappointed with C. The customer service tried to tell me that I am in a dead spot but looking at the service map online. However, over the last 10 days, I have not had that problem again, even during severe weather. For the money I paid, $130, it is a no brainer especially when you add the 200 MB/mo free data. I added SQUARE Trade warranty, which I had to use on my Kindle Fire, and they are excellent. I am adding a 32GB microSD card for movies on the go. Have yet to try Skype, which will be one of the reasons I bough. The camera quality is acceptable to me, albeit it is a bit lower resolution. Again, I look at the price I paid, and so can't complain much. Battery appears to hold well, will find out more when I take it for a road trip. ... show more
