  • Poor Software, hardware not much better
I do a *LOT* more scanning than I do printing. I'm going to review the scanning software first, then the printing. The scanning I do is usually mixed; invoices, correspondence, newspaper articles and photos. With my previous scanner made by a big name company that no longer sells scanner/printers, I could lay similar sized items on the auto feeder, lets say invoices and correspondence, and hit the scan button. All the documents would then be scanned and displayed in a resizable window. If I needed to see scan details I could zoom in on any one of the scanned documents to confirm a good scan. I'd then use my mouse and 'rubber band' around the documents I wanted to save together, click on 'save as', and I could save just the scanned images I wanted saved AND I could save them as PDF's, JPG's or BMP's. On occasion I'd scan items that needed to be saved as both a PDF and a JPG. In such cases I would 'save as' a PDF and then immediately 'save as' again as a JPG. Not so with the HP software. It requires you select the output file format BEFORE you scan. Worse, there is no way to change the output file format short of returning to the pre-scan window. So, using the example of wanting both a PDF and a JPG, you have to select one, say PDF, scan the item, save it, return to the pre-scan window (thereby loosing the scan image), select JPG, then scan the same item again. DUMB! Or lets say you have a bunch of invoices that need to be saved uniquely. Since the software does not support selecting or rubber-banding around one document at a time you have to 'mark for deletion' those you don't want included with the scan you are saving, save the item in question, mark it for deletion, undelete the next document you want to save, save it and so on. DUMB! And the software 'window' is not resizable. So in my case where I have a 36" monitor, the scanner window takes up less than a fourth of my monitor but I can't go full screen with it. Yes, if you double click on an individual item it will get bigger, but no bigger than the 'window'. DUMB! I could write more but I'm tired of writing about the software. On to the hardware... I have to give credit where credit is due, I have been very pleased with the speed and quality of the scanner. Very nice. And, by in large, the scanner feed mechanism has worked reliably. However, on occasion I have received invoices and documents that are just a tad bigger than 8-1/2 wide, and I mean a fraction of an inch bigger, or the paper is not a perfect rectangle, and I have discovered the hard way (feeder jam) that they have to be scanned on the platen. I can live with that but it's clearing the jam that's the problem. Much more difficult than my previous scanner. Worse, something has gotten in the mechanism that is now leaving a streak on my scans and there is no way without serious disassembly (beyond my skill level) that I can get the foreign object out (I think it's a little piece of paper). And then there are the ink cartridges. Like most printers, every time the printer is turned on it goes through a print head cleaning routine even when you are only scanning. In the 1+ years I've owned this printer I've printed perhaps 10 pages. Today I needed to print 2 pages of a contract, only black ink required, and discovered the 3 color cartridges were all empty but the much large black cartridge was still half full. Would the printer print? No. So I had to buy ALL THREE color ink cartridges (about $75) even though no color was needed. DUMB! I know, I should really buy a separate printer and a separate scanner and separate software but at my price point that's not realistic. What's annoying is that my previous scanner/printer and its corresponding software did it all and did it correctly. It was SMART! This HP is DUMB! ... show more

  • HP OfficeJet Pro 9015 is an excellent printer
The HP OfficeJet Pro 9015 is a refreshing multi-function printer that will outperform many printers in this category. I have always purchased HP Office Jet multi-function printers over the years and each time the technology and overall quality seem to improve. The 9015 model was a beauty straight out of the box with the smooth edges and nice color display. I was able to put it all together in less than 10 minutes due to setting up wireless connections and verification of joining their Instant Ink program that is optional and you get four months free for signing up for the monthly program. It gives you the option to choose how many pages you think you will print in a month and it lets unused pages roll over in the next month to sometimes save you some money. The printer is fast and quieter than prior models while it produces up 22 pages per minute and has an automatic two-sided scan and copy features. The document feeder on this new model can handle up to 35 pages of documents at a time. I put the automatic feeder to the test and used only 15 pages and expected it to jam but it worked perfectly. One of the best aspects of this printer is that it works with the HP smart app which I put on my phones and tablets along with laptops to be able to print remotely and keep up on the latest ink levels in case one is running low. The company has keyed in on using smart tasks to simplify common tasks while using Google Drive, quick books along with voice-enabled smart devices such as Alexa and Google Assistant. Another positive change is the focus on WIFI security with the printer and has even added basic encryption along with other methods to minimize the damage of private data being hacked. The company also states that it has “Self-healing WIFI” which works behind the scenes to make sure that your printer stays connected to your password-protected WIFI network. I was pleased to be able to try out the feature since I run 2 different WIFI networks for home and business use. I have not had any connectivity issues with the printer since I purchased it. It is refreshing because in the past my printer would have WIFI access but seemed to have issues many times or there was an unreasonable wait time for everything to process. I now can relax when I go to start printing many items because the printer is online and works from all of my devices at home through the HP print app. Overall, I am pleased with the versatility and cutting-edge technology this printer provides. I find that this was an economical choice for a high-quality machine and a better way for me to manage the printing costs for my business. I am also glad I can use the HP app to integrate with other apps for keeping my receipts together or printing important appointment or meeting details. I appreciate the fact that I have the flexibility to store items on a device or in a cloud service and then print them efficiently and quickly with the HP OfficeJet Pro 9015. ... show more
