  • Would have been a solid system if not for low-quality SSD
TLDR: Solid system but I had to replace the cheap, no-name SSD to get it that way. I originally paid $346 for this system back in February but all told it cost me $411 to transform it into a stable system. It took less than a month after receiving it for the problems to begin. It was a very intermittent problem and did not coincide with any particular activity. The “good” instances of the problem were characterized by the system freezing for a variable amount of time that usually lasted for between 30-60 seconds. It would then happily resume as if nothing happened. The “bad” instances were almost always preceded by the symptoms of a “good” instance but instead of resuming after while, the system would crash and present a BSOD. Interestingly, it was never able to get beyond the BSOD. It never was able to save even a trace of a dump file and would not restart. I would have to power it off and on in order to get it to respond in any way. The BSODs always featured one of the following errors: A Critical Process Died (the most common), Kernel Data Inpage Error or DPC Watchdog Violation. It was interesting to note that during a “good” instance of the problem the hard disk light would remain on solid. It also remained illuminated solidly (no blinking whatsoever) when the system crashed and would not go out until I powered the machine off. This was a clue that it was a problem with the system SSD but I was not certain of that for a while. These problems were not constant. At times the machine would run just fine for as long as three weeks and at other times I would get two instances in one day. That, of course, did not make it easy to figure out. I played around with the hardware a bit, swapping the system SSD to another slot, re-seating the memory sticks, running overnight memory and disk diagnostics and trying other drivers. I also tried all the “standard” Windows fixes like SFC and DISM. None of that made a difference. I eventually decided to reinstall Windows 11 from scratch in a kind of last ditch attempt to correct the problem. That made no difference either. As an interesting side note, when I received the machine, it has Windows 11 Pro installed. When I reinstalled Windows 11, the product key that was recorded in the UEFI firmware only allowed me to install Windows 11 Home. That was a bit of a head-scratcher and a bit of a disappointment as well. Made me wonder how the company that sold it to me managed to install Pro. The methods I know of to accomplish that are not what you would call legit but perhaps that had some kind of special deal with Microsoft. As the months wore on and the problem persisted I would periodically consult with AI and other online sources in search of a likely cause. Although I strongly suspected the system SSD, I wanted to spend enough time on it to be more certain. Eventually I was confident enough in that theory to act on it. I purchased a brand-new Samsung SSD to replace the system SSD and was lucky to find that it was on sale for just $65. Enough time has now passed without a failure to convince me that the SSD that was originally installed was indeed the problem. Whatever it is, it surely does not seem like a quality component and I am certain it was not the original SSD that was in this machine when HP shipped it. Why the original SSD was replaced is unknown to me and there could have been a thousand reasons for it. I just wish that whoever stuck the new drive in would have used one that was of better quality. The one that was installed is probably best described as low-quality, cheap, no-name garbage. As the image demonstrates, the label on the SSD does not include a brand name unless “N200” is a brand I have never heard of. I devoted a significant amount of time scouring the internet trying to find out more about this SSD but was unable to find much of anything. The obvious conclusion was low-quality, cheap, no-name garbage. Other than the defective SSD, this has been a solid system over the last seven months or so. As far as performance goes, it has exceeded my expectations. It has more horsepower than I actually need for 95 percent of what I normally do but it is nice to have that headroom when I want to do something more demanding. Obviously I would have been happier with this system if a quality SSD had been installed rather than the obviously cheap alternative that was chosen. It would have saved me quite a bit of time and effort trying to diagnose the problem. ... show more

  • SECOND PURCHASE SAME DEVICE THE DEVICE IS WONDERFUL! Customer Service is FANTASTIC!
EDIT 01 Oct 2024 The device is working without ANY issues. I run Slackware on the device and it works flawlessly. I will never build a new PC again. I swear I'm not with TekRefurbs but if you need a new "used" device they can't be beat. EDIT 04 Sept 2024 This device, #2, a HP EliteDesk 800 G5 i7-9700 purchased from TEKRefurbs Is almost PERFECT. A few use scratches exist on the facia and top cover. That's it. The inside is impeccable! No dust. I am so impressed. Further info and pictures to follow. I've NOT plugged in. Only unboxed, checked device, so far so good. NOTE: I purchased the same device last year from ECO-TECH, based on the review notes listed below. For some reason, Amazon associated ECO-TECH With TEKRefurbs. Maybe because of the same device name or maybe TEKRefurbs absorbed/bought ECO-TECH. Maybe ECO-TECH changed its name. Point is, ANY notes below DOES NOT involve above. The device may have been purchased from two different recyclers of tech. Which is fine. ECO-TECH did a great job. So far TEKRefurbs is blasting everything out of the park. More info/updates to follow. EDIT 22Nov23: The device below developed a small issue or perhaps it was shipped with the issue. When I advised ECO-TECH, they did everything they could to correct the issue and make it right. I wanted to point out that this type of old fashioned customer service is hard to find now-a-days and for this reason alone, when I need another PC, ECO-TECH WILL ALWAYS HAVE MY BUSINESS! I honestly believe you will be taken care of if any issues arise. HP EliteDesk 800 G5-SFF, Core i7-9700 3.0GHz, 32GB RAM, 1TB M.2-NVMe, Windows 11 Pro 64Bit, (Renewed) About this item • CPU: 9th Generation Intel Core i7-9700 8-Core Processor 3.0 GHz, up to 4.7GHz, 8 Core, 12MB SmartCache. • Memory: 32GB DDR4 2400 DIMM RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD (PCIe) • Operating System: Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit-Multi-Language(EN/ES/FR) • Includes: RGB Keyboard and Mouse, ‎ Intel UHD 630 Graphics (Integrated), Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), Bluetooth 4.0, HDMI, DisplayPort. • Ports: 6 x USB 3.1 Gen 1, 4 x USB 2.0, 1x USB-C 3.1; 1 x Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack, 1x Headphone Jack; 1x Audio-In, 1x Audio-Out (Rear). Device ordered on a Tuesday, arrived Saturday of the same week. Packed well and secure. Several features as stated on the webpage (screenshots taken, not included) are a little misleading. Honestly, I think it comes down to wording. But, in my estimation, the wording on the webpage indicates the device comes with a 1TB nvme m.2. The device came with a 1TB Western Digital SSD. The 2 nvme slots are unpopulated. The page also says it has WiFi and Bluetooth. It does not as the seller provides a USB dongle. The WiFi nvme slot is also unpopulated. The device came loaded with Win 11 not 10. Also, the splash page of the company who used to own this device pops up. Again minor issues. System information verifies it is a 8 core 9th Gen i7. All in all, the device is a little dirty and the dust inside is prevalent. Quite a large cloud of dust came out. As for the Bluetooth & WiFi, not having it. That's fine as I don’t use Bluetooth or WiFi for anything. Several of the case screws are missing and it looks like someone had the cooler off the i7 as there is excess thermal paste on the motherboard and on the ram. For the price and overall condition of the device I’m really very happy and for what I’ll be using this for it is perfect. I just think the wording for things sold should be very precise. I do believe anything purchased from this company will serve your needs well. Absolutely recommend this seller. ... show more

  • Extremely loud fan, suspect CPU is running too hot.
Extremely loud fan, probably because the CPU is running hot. I intended to return it, but I needed it badly, so I decided to just bite the bullet and keep using it until it burns up.
