    • Exactly what I needed
I purchased this unit refurbished for about half the price Back Market wanted for the same thing. With the money saved I also purchased the extended warranty. I needed a new laptop to replace the dinosaur I had. I got into 3D printing and needed something that could run the software as well as be compact and easy to use.     • Died in less than 8 months, do not buy.
This seemed like a great computer when I got it. (Except for the fact that the Windows 10 search bar did not work, and I never was able to get it to work.) I peeled off the "protective cover" that was applied to it and the surface underneath was cleans and unscratched. Fast forward, 8 months. I tried to boot it up today and it was dead. I assumed the battery had lost it charge, but when I plugged in the charger, the "charging light" on the side did not go on. I thought it might be the power supply so I got a spare and had the same problem. I checked the power supply with a voltmeter and it was OK. I started searching online and found this is a common problem for HP Elitebook 840 computers. Apparently something on the motherboard died. So it went from a great computer to a brick. I have had good experience with HP notebook computers in the past, including refurbished units. But stay away from this one. ... show more

    • Pretty Much as Described
The unit was as described and cosmetically in good condition. The caveat pertaining to the battery proved to be the issue. The installed battery was not OEM. Every time the unit is booted a POST error would display stating the battery was not HP and may cause error; press enter to continue. with a I replaced the battery with an OEM battery ($22.49), POST error goes away. In the process, the existing battery only had three mounting screws instead of the called for five. The serial number and product type tags did not match the HP product ID scan. ... show more

The seller sent me what looks like an almost brand new laptop. This one has the smart card reader. That was all I really was concerned with, since I use it for federal employee work to log in remotely.     • Several Scratches but OTW it seems like a great deal
Pros: Performance and it's not loaded with junk software. Everything works like it should. Con: There are a few very visible scratches. Seems to have cookies that are all in Spanish, every window opens up in Spanish even after setting the language to English. Lots of paper particles caught under the keys. Computer has some use as the internal fan shows more signs of debris and dust. I think the previous owner ate tacos and chips every day for lunch on the keyboard.
