  • 5 Stars Out of the Box...Will It Stand the Test of Time?
I'm a business user...mostly Google docs and other cloud-based apps. This machine handles dozens of open tabs with ease. It also came pretty clean, with practically no bloatware. That saved me the time of having to remove that crap and getting it out of memory so that can be used for apps I actually need. Took only 45 minutes to set up and start using. This machine is fast. The sound quality is better than my previous Envy out of the box. It rocks. And since 32GB/1 TB SSD hard drive laptops don't come standard from HP, this was a good find. Super-jazzed about it. The only question will be if it requires repairs. My previous HP Envy had a touchscreen go bad, which I just disabled because I don't use that anyway. And it also had the charging pin go, but it worked just enough to get a charge if you held the cord at the right angle. However, it was the only laptop I had that didn't need to be sent in for repair within the 2 years in which I owned it. I see a lot of other people really love their HP Envys too. So, I'm hoping for the same experience with this one. ... show more

  • Who manufactures a laptop WITHOUT A KENSINGTON lock port? HP, that's who.
A perfectly good ASUS laptop barely 2-years out of the box developed a flaky keyboard. I have an extended warrantly that will cover the repair, but because of my work, cannot afford to be without a computer (and the ridiculously small SSD C: drive was also driving me nuts, so I searched for a new machine that had the kind of storage I need. I found it here in this 3rd Party modified version of the Envy 17t, which was shipped promptly by the vendor, Michael Electronics, and was received in pristine condition. Set up was quick and efficient, and the laptop turns on and boots up very fast. Operationally, I have no real complaints at this point, after 4-5 days of use. Keyboard has good tactile response, but like other HP laptops I have owned in the past, the key caps do not illuminate well at all -- the letters are so fine that little light passes through (more bleeds around the edges) that unless you are looking straight down on the keyboard, you might as well leave the backlight off because it blinds you otherwise in the dark . . . not so good if you're lying back on the sofa or in bed. Also, the design of the lid leaves something to be desired. The bottom corners are square and sharp . . . I'm sure I will accidentally puncture one of my palms as a result. I realize the designers did this for looks when the laptop is closed . . . but who uses a laptop under normal conditions like that? A bit more realistic thought should have gone into the design. Using a USB bridge cable, I was able to transfer the critical data files in a matter of a few hours, and I was able to reinstall some of my programs (Adobe Creative Cloud, WordPerfect) with downloads from the "cloud." The included DVD drive is much appreciated . . . something most 17" laptops no longer come with. But . . . here comes the BAD NEWS. We live in an unsafe world. When I'm not chained to my home office due to the COVID-19 chaos, I will be back on the road for work 10-20 days per month. I spend many nights in a hotel room, mostly in places that have a breakfast in the morning, but few of which have dinner at night. So I either have to bring food back to the hotel or dine out. My practice has been, for the past 15-20 years, to LOCK my laptop with a Kensington lock whenever my laptop will be left alone like that. **I cannot do that with this laptop.** I hated having to spend $2,000 (after tax and a new extended warranty) for a laptop under the present circumstances. I hate having spent the money and time to set up this new laptop, only to realize four or five days later that there is NO KENSINGTON LOCK port. **That just simply SUCKS!!** Yes, if you look closely at the product photos, you will discover that there is no Kensington port. So caveat emptor. My bad. Given the fact that I am evidently hard on my laptops, having to replace them within 2-3 years, I won't have to suffer too long with this sad state of affairs. The alternative, which I had to do on a previous laptop, which might also have been an HP now that I think about it, is to buy a stick-on Kensington port, which will solve my problem, but will also leave me with a laptop that has a giant wart on its face staring across the table at a client. Just SUCKS. ======================= June 6, 2020 After a couple of weeks of setting up the laptop, transferring files, attaching a Kensington locking device, and using this laptop, I really am not very happy with it. Despite 32gb of RAM, there are all sorts of problems running multiple programs simultaneously. I am a longtime user of Adobe Creative Suite products -- primarily Acrobat, InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere -- and frequently need to run two or more of them at the same time, while also using Chrome browser, Thunderbird, and other utilities. On Wed, June 3 . . . just two weeks into using this laptop . . . Chrome suddenly locked up. Would not shut down and I used Task Manager to end the program. Chrome would not restart. Shut the computer off, and restarted. Chrome would not restart. Tried to uninstall and reinstall Chrome and got an error message that a Chrome window was already open, which was not the case. I spent hours looking for a fix without success. Called MichaelElectronics2 tech support. Spent another hour with their tech trying to remove Chrome with no luck. Downloaded and installed Windows 10 2004 update . . . another 2 hours of my time. At least this appeared to resolve the problem as Chrome was once again installed and working. But since then, while using InDesign and Acrobat simultaneously, the computer continues to behave erratically. Chrome continues to lock up or not work as expected, Acrobat display of documents occasionally degrades into strange anomalies. InDesign and Acrobat lock up unexpectedly and sometimes cannot be shut down even with Task Manager, forcing a system shut down with programs and files open. And even this, on a number of occasions, causes the computer to turn off but not shut down unless I hold down the Power Button for 20-50 seconds. I don't know if this is a fault of Windows 10 v2004, which reviewers have described as another Microsoft faulty software release, or something within the architecture of the HP Envy motherboard or a CPU flaw. I do know that when I am not running InDesign, the computer seems to behave better. But it's entirely frustrating, in 2020, to have a $2000 laptop that behaves much the same as my first experience with Windows software in 1992 on an IBM PC-XT with far less computing power than my cell phone has today. Last time I will ever purchase an HP computer. Period. ======================================================== 24 June 2020 . . . Five-stars without a doubt to the Customer Service folks at GreatPrice Tech/MichaelElectronics2 for their patience and effort to resolve the problem I experienced. While the HP product is crappy, the folks who sold it are not responsible for the design flaws mentioned above. I would not hesitate to purchase another laptop from them. A replacement laptop was purchased and shipped with the intent to transfer all my data to a new machine before returning the original purchase, but the replacement had a defective video card or display and was returned and refunded. In the meantime, scouring the Internet for comparable problems and solutions, I began to see that some of the problems I was experiencing were induced by the Adobe Creative Cloud program, which would not permit the system to shut down when attempting to do so. After removing the program the system lockups seemed to stop, so I decided to keep the original laptop after all. It is now past the 30-day return period, and, regrettably, I still experience random unexpected lockups, but the frequency is much lower and I can sometimes go for many hours of continuous use without a problem. There is no consistency to the lockups -- sometimes while using Adobe Creative Suite products, sometimes while using Microsoft Office 2019 products, or WordPerfect -- so I have once again learned to save my work every few minutes because the autosave functions in these various programs do not always save reliably. It's an annoyance, but not as frustrating as the first three weeks of use and before removing the Adobe Creative Suite tool, which I really did not use all that often. Still, the system *always* locks up in some way upon restart after allowing or deliberately putting the system into hibernation -- such as the inability to save work, failure to connect to the Internet even though there is a network connection, inability to start a program. The problem is obviously a Windows OS issue, perhaps a conflict with some components on the motherboard or the SSD drive where the software resides. So I either leave the computer on all the time (connected to AC power) or shut it down, which often means having to close something I'm in the middle of working on. Additionally, when restarting after a lockup, the system will not start properly, which is easily recognized because my ESET virus protection start up screen does not appear. When this happens, the only way to shut down the computer is to hold the power button for 10-30 seconds to force a shutdown. The next power on is usually successful. Definitely a Windows OS issue because this sometimes causes an automatic Windows self repair. Inconvenient, yes. Problematic, yes. Worth a hypertensive episode, no. Just something I will have to learn to deal with. I do like the touchscreen -- no complaints there. The number of 17" screen laptops is also definitely shrinking, and it seems that HP is about the only one making them. ... show more

  • Good for what I needed it for!
I love that it is lightweight and smaller. It's not tablet size, but its not bulky like other laptops. I bought it for my home based business and it works great. The down side is that when you first start it up and set it up it is set as Windows 10 S and you are unable to install apps that are not Microsoft approved like Chrome, Firefox, Facebook Messenger, and Adobe Acrobat. However, you can find similar apps on the Microsoft store. If you would rather have Win 10 then you can switch to it from either the Microsoft store or your settings. You will lose some of the Windows 10 S features like the extra security protection. Another reason I gave 4 stars on storage capacity is that there is only 5 gigs of one drive space. You can either upgrade or if you have a family or business version of Microsoft Office 365 then you'll have the full 1TB of one drive space. I plan to upgrade the hard drive in the future to a 1TB. Overall, it is a great buy and perfect for what I need it for. I chose to keep the Win 10 S as the operating system. And I just transferred my files to my one drive account I have associated with Microsoft Family so I have all my files. I just delete what I don't need from my main account after it has been uploaded to my secondary account. Just a word of warning you are not able to link Microsoft accounts to each other so make sure when you set up your laptop that you choose the account you want to login with because once it is set it cannot be changed. ... show more

  • Just what I needed.
So far I like everything about this laptop. I'm using it for development. It's fast, nice size screen, good camera and battery life. I'm very happy with my purchase. Eventually, I'll buy a docking station and using it as a replacement for my desktop computer.

  • From a Chromebook skeptic... THIS is the one you want!
My usual problems with Chromebooks always amount to issues with either the limited amount of memory, limited storage, or poor CPU performance. This Chromebook has NONE of those issues! It's slightly heavier than I anticipated, but nothing that I can't handle. Everything worked right out of the box and even had a full-charge on the battery. Got here in less than 2 days.
