  • Practical Everyday Laptop, NOT Touchscreen
This is a well-made, thin, lightweight laptop, easy to carry. It has larger reasonably high-def screen. Be aware, it is NOT touchscreen which I thought you might get at this price point. Also, it has only 8 gigs of RAM, not much these days. Unless you add more memory, and you can, that's entry-level. I'm not going to take stars off for those things as you know they are disclosed up front. I'm not going to explain all the technical specs. I use this laptop for word processing, email, reading articles and news, shopping online, social media, and Skype video calls. I also stream movies and videos and it does a good job for me. I do some light photo editing and it handles that, although I do need an exterior mouse for cursor control. There's a decent camera for video calls and the microphone works well. Wifi is built in as are good speakers. This comes with Windows 11 installed and you will either need a Microsoft account, or set one up, in order to use this. There are the usual few hours required to update software, delete apps you don't want, and download/install the ones you do. They always want you to use MS "Edge" but I like Opera because, for one thing, you get a free VPN button. And so on. There's a lot to like about this laptop. The keyboard is well laid out and easy to use. One quibble: the "delete" and "power" keys are side-by-side -- be careful. Also, the keyboard works well but the touchpad "mouse" makes your cursor jump all over the place while you're typing, loses where you're at, highlights things you didn't select, and has other weird behavior. I solved this by plugging in a USB dongle-mouse and then disabling the touchpad in settings. That caused my typing to stabilize immediately. Unfortunately, this limits the laptop's usefulness on an aircraft etc. when it's not so simple to use a separate mouse. The screen gives me crisp, bright images and rich colors. It measures 15.6-inches diagonally, 15" straight across. That's a good large screen and I enjoy using it, either at home or on the go. I recently used it during an airline flight and it was handy to have. I took it on fully charged and had ample power for the flight. It will generally operate for more than 5 hrs before you need to plug it back in. The simple tech things I'll mention: only 8 GB of RAM, which is my biggest concern. I think for the price they could have given us 16. I opened the back (4 screws you can see, none hidden under the rubber strips unlike some previous models; and a careful pry-off, not for the faint of heart). There are 2 slots provided for RAM, one empty. I spent a couple of hours contacting HP's tech assistance (wait wait wait...) and was finally told that 8 gigs is the max. She didn't know if that meant you could put another 8 gig card into the spare slot, of if the comes-with 8 is all you can use. The internal HD has only 516 gigs, but it is solid state, reliable, and fast. There are only 3 USB ports - 1 x USBc and 2 x USBa. I could use more than that because I like a wireless mouse at home and the dongle takes one port. I also run an external harddrive from WD which gives me 5 TBs of additional storage -- and needs another port. That leaves me 1 for any other device or stick I might want to plug in. All that said, the price is kind of high for the specs, but it is the dependable HP brand, a company that stands behind its products, unlike some overseas suppliers whose warranty/repair centers are hard to find or nonexistent. You pay a little extra for that peace of mind. Overall I find this a handsome, sleek and practical laptop and use it daily. It serves my purposes well. ... show more

  • Better pricing than HP
Before diving into the machine itself, as of 4/12/2024, HP lists the same machine with the same spec for 840USD vs Amazon's 650USD. For that, I upped 3 stars to 4 stars. As for the machine, the I5-1334U is definitely the highlight of all things, as it is a fairly capable CPU with Iris Xe, which can do 4k. The 15.6in display/screen on this machine is mediocre at best at 1366 x 768, which almost like a chrome book. 8GB memory and 512GB SSD are all pointing toward light duty usage. Wireless connectivity works well as opposed to the limited port availability. Overall construction has a cheap feel to me. I currently have it set up in clamshell mode with a 2k monitor, smooth experience with better graphics. Somewhat defeating the purpose of owning a laptop. Lastly, to touch on Windows 11, in order to use this machine, windows did require me to have a microsoft account. At least, during initial setup, I did not find a way to bypass the account login step. ... show more

  • A great laptop for work or for personal use!!
I was looking for a new computer for myself for work since my work doesn't provide anything except desktops for business use. So when I saw the HP 15 inch Laptop, HD Display, 13th Generation Intel Core i5-1334U, 8 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD laptop, I had to have it!!!! It comes native with Windows 11 home edition on it, which is fine for most browsing or document work. It comes with a SSD drive in it which is extremely fast! The laptop appears to scream speed, despite that it only has 8gb of memory. I'm very impressed with the small amount of memory but fantastic performance. The keyboard is easy to reach and includes a keypad for entering numbers. The screen is a 15 inch high definition monitor and has some privacy features built in. I've played movies and video games on this laptop and it is a rocket ship without any slowing down. Since its a name brand HP laptop, support for it is easy to come buy and it comes with a 1 year warranty. Get one for yourself soon and be happy!! I'd recommend this 5 stars! ... show more

  • Overall Mediocre Machine
To be fair, I have a lot of high end machines that I use so my review of this computer may not be relevant if you only want an average system. I'm going to break down my comments into sections to help me organize my thoughts and hopefully make it easier for you to find what's important to you. Pros: The battery life is really good, I've used it on and off for an entire day without needing to charge it. I can't tell you the total time in use but I can't remember every having a laptop that was usable for a large part of a day. The total weight is on the light side, It adds very little to a backpack filled with other electronics and charging equipment. The Keyboard is a full size with all the important keys in their standard locations, I can switch from a desktop keyboard to this without even having to think about it. Cons: Some of these are very important to me. The Screen Resolution is at the very low end of acceptable, some of my software and apps have problems when the menu's don't fit on the screen. I'm currently running my browser at 80% zoom so that I can see roughly the same amount of information that I get on my other laptops. My biggest issue is the Screen Color/Hue & Brightness. The screen has a washed out look to it. The angle that you look at the screen changes what you see to a very large degree. Tilting the screen backward and forward can make it feel a little better but I can't find a way to get the brightness, saturation and hue all balanced at the same time. It has a very cheap look to it. This is a purely subjective topic but I don't like the feel and sound of the keyboard. It's not terrible but the sound is a little on the clicky side. Oddly enough this does appear to be getting better with use. The computing power is decent, battery life is very good and it runs all of my software without a glitch. If it had a decent screen this would be a really nice middle of the road pc. ... show more
