  • Great desktop replacement laptop
Color: Shadow Black
I bought this laptop to replace my desktop. My wife needed my desk to work from home, due to this covid crap and this was my compromise. I won’t go over all the ports as it’s all listed. I could have chose a laptop that was priced more, but as far a features there really isn’t one that has more for the price. I bought this to primarily to game, occasionally edit photos, but Not take notes in a classroom. I didn’t expect the battery to be the best, because it has the hardware that resembles more of a desktop. It does game wonderfully. I get well over on 100 fps on most of my games on high settings. The laptop also stays very cool under load as seen in the photos, even gaming for hours. The temps rarely go over 75c on either the gpu or cpu, and the fans don’t have a terrible whine at high speeds, nor do they actually get that loud. The I was also happy the computer doesn’t come with a boat load of bloatware. It only had a a few applications I would t use. In terms of build quality it is built great, it feels very premium, It does have a little keyboard flex, but nothing terrible. The only con I would give this laptop is the screen does have some backlight bleed, that in the dark can be seen. I would recommend this laptop to anyone in the market for a new computer. ... show more

  • Money Well Spent
Color: Shadow Black
I bought this going in blind with little to no tech knowledge on what a good gaming laptop would be. I asked a few friends and this brand came up more than once, so I followed their advice and invested in one. I am not disappointed! The Omen is my baby now and I can't stop using it. It's the smoothest-running laptop I've ever had, and all the games I like to play run like a dream. It's also huge- I knew it would be big, but I had no idea how much of a chonker it would be until I actually held it. I was concerned with the hinge's design that it would be unstable, but it's very sturdy and I have had no problems or concerns since I actually got it. Overall, I'm very satisfied with my purchase and am excited to see all that this laptop can do for me in the future. ... show more

  • Great mid-range buy... Until it fails.
Color: Shadow Black
It has a great screen size and it runs very fast. Youtube, for instance, loads full pages of videos in under a half second. The big problem that some will have is that the clips holding the screen to the base are a little weak feeling, but that's not a hageproblem for me. Also the camera quality is lacking. EDIT: after under one month, the screen has a line and test show video failure on RBG values. This product has the problem that all HP products have, it breaks in just under a month. I beg this company to come by and talk to me about the 5 HP items I've owned in 2 years that have all broken down within a month. Or they can come explain why a couple of weeks ago a new Wi-Fi printer I got from them worked with one app and suddenly takes two today. Do yourself a favor and find any other company to buy things from. I won't be buying HP ever again, I'll be going with better designed and soldered laptops. ... show more

  • Pretty nice laptop. Much better than the Alienware that it replaced.
Color: Shadow Black
Positives: - Full-fledged 2070 Mobile GPU (rather than Max Q) puts it at a performance level near the desktop version of the GTX1080, and near the 2080 Max Q. The only reason this isn't as fast as a desktop 2070 is that it has to run at slower clock speeds in order to keep from overheating. Game performance is top notch for a laptop! - Keyboard and trackpad are pretty nice. Good feel for both, good articulation, and they don't get that greasy feeling from use. I especially like the use of actual buttons for the trackpad. - Easily upgradeable. Just pop off the bottom (after removing a decent number of screws - use a magnetic screw tray to keep track of them!) and change out your RAM, add an SATA or M.2 SSD, or even swap out the M.2 SSD already there. I did ALL of these by replacing the 16GB of RAM with 32GB, adding a 1TB SATA SSD, adding a 2TB M.2 SSD, and replacing the original M.2 SSD with another 1TB. - Easy to maintain. Once again, just pop off the bottom and you can clean any and all dust from the thing. If you ever need to replace the fan(s) or apply new thermal paste, you have all the access you need. - Cooling isn't bad. I've run a few games for a few hours at a time, yet haven't felt like I was burning my lap or my hands. This is far better than what I was expecting. So far, no huge performance throttling and no random thermal-based errors or lockups. - Ports. With the exception of HDMI 2.1, this has every port I could want. Plus, the power is on the back left, meaning it doesn't get in the way of the right-side of the system where many place a USB mouse. - Screen. This thing is very bright and very responsive. It's hard to say if it's G-SYNC compatible, as there are no options for it in the nVidia control panel. This may be due to how it's routed through the onboard Intel display chip. I've yet to try to hook it up to an external G-Sync compatible display. Even so, at 144hz, it's absolutely responsive enough for the frame rates you'll be seeing at its native 1080p resolution. Negatives: - Quiet speakers. Yep, the "Bang and Olufsen" speakers are too quiet. At full volume, they're just about right if you're sitting right in front of it. Almost, as some content still seems quiet. Normally, I'd expect a laptop to fill a room with sound at full volume. I'm used to having mine in the corner of the office, playing music as I work. Now? Now I need powered speakers. - Noisy Fans at full-speed. Normally, this thing is actually pretty quiet. Unfortunately, if you want to push the fans up to full speed, they get really, really loud. I get it - you can't use large, slow fans in a laptop this size. That doesn't make them any quieter. - Only HDMI 2.0. With TVs and monitors going up in resolution and refresh, I was hoping it would have a port to match. It doesn't. While HDMI 2.0 isn't bad, this is a lost opportunity to future-proof the system. As it is, I can't run my TV at 4K 120Hz, which is a letdown. - Fine Control of hardware not so fine. You can't make microadjustments to voltages, memory timings, and clock rates. Gamers tend to get pretty experimental on these things, yet there's no way in the BIOS or in the included software to do it. Maybe it's a way for HP to try to ensure the thing is stable, but it's definitely a negative for a large number of gamers. I haven't delved too deep into the BIOS, but so far I don't see any ways to overclock or undervolt it without third-party software. - Thick and heavy. Don't go into this thinking it'll be like your normal portable. This chunk-a-chunk is a shade over 7 lbs, and it's a good deal thicker than my other laptops. -Screen flex. As you can guess, the center-mounted hinge makes it so the screen can flex a fair bit from corner to corner and side to side. Since it's a fairly stiff hinge, it won't be wobbling all that much (until the hinge wears a bit and loosens), but when any pressure at all is put on one site of the screen or the other, it becomes an issue. Overall: I haven't had to live with it yet, having just received it yesterday, so this is just my initial impressions. It's quieter, cooler, faster, and easier to upgrade/maintain than my 2019 Alienware 17 R5. That was my last gaming laptop, and it gave me nothing but problems. Already, my experience with this HP, out of the box, is so much better. The full RTX 2070 mobile is a big plus, and the cooling seems good enough to keep it stable and fast. If you're on the fence between this and some other models, know that the difference between this and the Max-Q variant can be pretty significant. Look up those benchmarks and decide how much that's worth to you, and if you can put up with a chunky machine just to keep it cool and stable. Good luck! UPDATE: Cooling isn't great. There's no ability to change the voltage or clock speeds of the components directly. As such, the only way to change the temperature profile is to use bundled OEM software to decide if you want Comfort, Normal, or Performance modes, and whether you want to use Auto fan-speed or Max fan-speed. These settings allow no tweaking, and give zero detail. After running Forza Horizon 4 at 1080p at maximum settings in Performance mode with Max fan-speed for roughly an hour, the Omen's OEM software reported CPU temperatures at 97c and GPU at 85c. This is pretty bad. Normally, I'd start looking at undervolting, which often works quite well on gaming laptops, but that's simply not possible here. Yes, I have the system fully loaded with both SSD slots, both RAM slots, and the SATA bay filled. So what? The SSD slots have shielding, as does the SATA bay, and the only one that should get hot at any given time is the one that's in use. No, it's not meant to be a "hard core" gaming system, but HP can and should do better than this. At the very least, give us the option to determine how our systems run. If I wanted cooling this bad, I'd have gone for at least a thinner/lighter laptop like the Asus A15 or the MSI GP75. And both of those allow the user to fine-tune their systems' performance. UPDATE 2: As for the sound, I was able to increase the volume to respectable levels by using the Omen Audio app and turning all the EQ sliders all the way up. This means I can't EQ it to taste without making it much quieter, but it does (supposedly) raise the volume levels up 12db. It's loud enough now, but definitely not ideal. ... show more

Color: Shadow Black
This is exactly what we were looking for. Basically a really good gaming pc in a laptop format. Benchmarks out very well in 3dmark, feels solid. Fans are reasonable. Graphics are superb. Overall very pleased Battery lasted through set up and downloads of a couple games, but didn't expect battery life to be great with a full 2070. Color: Shadow Black
So far so good! I use it now over my desktop, to be fair my desktop is also about 6 years old, so it lived a good life. So, it has been fun to actually play World of Warcraft again on a higher graphic setting. Batter is not really good, but I understand that is a gaming laptop thing, so meh. I live The ONLY real downside I see is the sound can't get really high. I am half deaf, so I usually have to have anything I listen to sort of turned up. But I really have never had that problem before. Yet, I have had to play some YouTube videos on my phone as I just can't get it high enough to clearly hear. Soooooo that is technically a me problem. So if you are not half deaf, you will be fine. OH! If you need a laptop bag it will fit into a CoolBELL Laptop Messenger Bag 17.3 Inch, barely but it will fit. (It is snug as a bug in a rug) ... show more
