  • Scientifically sound yet incredibly approachable!
Format: Paperback
How to Grow a Baby strikes that perfect balance of being incredibly informative and educational—yet accessible enough for someone who doesn't "speak science" like me. Between the adorable illustrations and the "Take Action" breakdown at the end of each chapter, this book is deeply actionable. I'm someone who sees and understands the value in leading a holistic lifestyle—yet that's not how I was raised, and I'm certainly not the person who eats 100% organic or composts—so I wanted a pregnancy book that would give me the modern, science-based, non-consumerist-driven tools I needed to grow a healthy baby, without the judgment or "hippie-dippy-trippiness" that can sometimes accompany that realm of thinking. This HIT THE NAIL right on the head for me. While her journey isn't mine, I feel like I have the author with me throughout my pregnancy—when I remember to tilt my pelvis a certain way when walking my dog, when I remind myself to change up the seated position I'm in while reading, when I reach for kimchee or apples cooked in butter as a healthy snack. The last thing to note is this book also does an amazing job of exposing the miracle that is parenthood and growing a human, without being too precious about it. She offers up all of these biological and evolutionary insights that I (as the kid who was never interested in science) had zero idea about—the way your breastmilk varies from morning to night, how we literally get a dopamine hit when we're caring for our babies, etc.—which just further helped me see the RAD sh*t my body is doing right now, despite the less-than-ideal parts of pregnancy and body changes. All the stars for this one! ... show more

  • Evidence-based, Informative, and Beautiful Evidence-based, Informative, and Beautiful
Format: Paperback
This book could not have come out at a more perfect time for me as a first-time mother. Amy Hammer's eloquent narrative style presenting evidence-based, practical, and insightful information is visualized beautifully and memorably through Michelle Lassaline's art. The two together make for a book that you almost forget is giving you very real and practical information because it is so fluidly written and visually stimulating. It helped ease many of the fears I had about becoming pregnant, now being pregnant, giving birth, and raising a child from what to eat, to what products to use on my skin, to how to stay active, to the labor and delivery itself. I now have a lot less fear surrounding pregnancy and have this book to thank. ... show more

  • How to Grow a Baby has everything that pregnant and new mothers need
Format: Paperback
How to Grow a Baby has everything that pregnant and new mothers need; it is sweet and informative, as well as validating, comforting, and affirming. As a mother, a birth doula, a lactation educator and counselor, and a sister to two currently pregnant women, this book has SO MUCH INFORMATION that I want women to know! I have read more birth, postpartum, and breastfeeding books than I could count, and still I learned a lot in this book. I kept paper and pen nearby to make notes on things like hormonal health and other fantastic resources that are listed in this book. One thing I think a lot of women are going to appreciate is that the author is writing from a non-judgmental and compassionate place. I love that she shares the overwhelmingly positive science about natural birth and breastfeeding without alienating women who weren’t able to succeed or meet their birth and breastfeeding goals. The illustrations were perfect and capture the exact vibe of the chapter. I am currently 6 months postpartum, and just looking at that postpartum illustration page with the breastfeeding baby, the boppy pillow, the pump, the postpartum pads—all of that imagery captured the experience so well. Women will see these pictures and feel the shared common experience with other women immediately. I think things like pelvic floor health, the mouth biome, understanding methylation, and the difference between movement and exercise (to name a few) are topics that women are interested in but do not yet have a manual like this. These topics are what we are asking our midwives and friends if they know anything about, and frequently even our care provider doesn’t have adequate up-to-date information about whether or not kegels are necessary for them and if MTHFR impacts birth, for example. I was so pleasantly surprised to see these topics in this book. It makes this book stand out from other natural birth books. Overall, wonderful mix of memoir and science. I loved that this was written by a nurse, and yet it feels like any of my closest friends could have been sharing these stories with me. Highly recommend. ... show more

  • A Must-read for new and soon-to-be parents. A Must-read for new and soon-to-be parents.
Format: Paperback
As a father of three young children, this is the book I wish had been published about a decade ago. It is packed full of well-researched and actionable information that can be applied immediately. Even though the content is science-backed and serious, the writing is delightfully charming and the illustrations are gorgeous. How to Grow a Baby reminds me of books by Emily Oster - evidence-backed, practical, and utterly inspiring. ... show more

  • Beautifully written, gorgeous illustrations!
Format: Paperback
I'm not pregnant, but one day I hope to birth a child. I think this book is essential reading for someone like me who doesn't know much about pregnancy or childbirth...It's full of well-researched information, and is written with a kind, thoughtful and modern voice. The illustrations are breathtaking and informative. This book is a treasure! ... show more

  • It’s someone else’s narrative
Format: Paperback
While the general info in this book is accurate - I was unimpressed by the fact that the entire book is almost written as a novel, from first person perspective of the author. It is not easy to read or glance through for topics as it is formatted in lengthy paragraphs like a regular novel would read. I was looking for/ expecting a guide or list of what to expect - not reading about another woman’s experience. If I wanted that I would have gone on the intervener forums. ... show more

  • Not enough direct citations
Format: Paperback
also a bit biased on the natural birth method A good and easy read Nice illustrations but I'm not sure I would call this science based due to lack of citations in the text to where you can find the full info.

  • A standout amongst a sea of baby books
Format: Paperback
A few years ago, I was having dinner with some well-off friends and the topic of baby books came up. One was bemoaning the lack of really good books, and the other suggested that she write a baby book herself. The market was wide open, right? Didn't she have a friend in publishing? I remember thinking to myself, "but what on earth do you know about this? You work in fundraising!" Enter Amy Hammer. Amy wrote this book because mothering, nutrition, movement, and research are her passion, not because she had a connection with a publisher. Amidst a sea of "how to parent" books, Amy's book stands out as both a pleasure to look at (those illustrations!) and as a well rounded, holistic, non-preachy gem. The book is chalk full of well researched wisdom on topics not always covered by baby books, like movement (spoiler alert! it's not all about Kegels) and the gut biome. Do yourself a favor and support this author! ... show more
