I was really impressed with this book Joe back does a great job at explaining the tricks of the trade and backing it up with great no frills illustrations. What impressed me most was how the book was more of a conversation then a step by step gonna read it a few more times I bet and would recommend it to anyone who has ever done packing or horse camping in general or wants to get into it (Like me). Don't leave home without it

I bought this book to fine tune my packing knots before a big hunting trip last year and found the book apply named. The Author Joe Back, is an illustrator as well as experienced packer and did a great job drawing the step by step directions for each knot and hitch. Although packing hasn't changed a great deal, the book is a little outdated (printed in 1989) and was missing some details on the latest technology like adjustable trees and fancy blankets, etc. but I still found a wealth of valuable information and enjoyed the old timer language and teaching style using real experience and stories to illustrate a point. Overall- this is a good book to have in your packing library and would have gotten 5 stars and a "great" designation if it included updates in packing gear through 2015.

This was a fun book, Joe is one of the good ol' boys and his writing reflects this. Sometimes I got lost in his wording but it was a fun read, very informative and I can't wait to use the knowledge on my first pack trip this next summer. I highly recommend this book, it was fun, entertaining and gives you a glimpse of life years ago.

I love how the author writes like he talks. the book is informative as well as entertaining. the only thing that would make it a little better would be making the print a little bigger. but nice reference book.

I really enjoyed reading this book on horse packing and all the background. I know this is the absolute classis of horse packing. All the info is great but the amazing details of Joe Black's pencil drawings cannot be surpassed by any other book. Most horse packing books reference Joe Black's book.

A valuable resource if you are using a pack animal for your camping gear. You will learn a lot before heading off to the Grand Canyon and taking a donkey trail right. The drawings are great and help make the narrative better. Great book.
