  • Enjoyable And Entertaining!
Format: Kindle
I loved everything about this story. Deputy Lt. Horse whose character is just the type of law enforcement personnel you want on your side. The descriptions of the desert with its different flora and fauna, and of course Indian Joe who was in my opinion the real hero of the story. I am looking forward to reading more books in this series. ... show more

  • Pleasant read, no mystery; loaded with backstory
Format: Kindle
This is a serviceable short story that could be a great novel about the nether regions of the desert flanking the Colorado River. The setting is 1960, near the ghost town of Earp California, San Berdoo County. Cold War threatening, Roy Rogers riding, Route 66 still the most viable pathway to wherever. The strongest element of this novel is the protagonist's knowledge of the territory, its vegetation and terrain. He is a vaguely ethnic undersheriff managing the lonely outpost in the Mojave desert where it intersects with the Sonoran desert. The characters are one-dimensional, born of convenience (Andy, the rookie deputy plays dumb so Lt. Carlos Caballo can preach to the reader about nuances of the territory as the two seek out a murderer on the run. Except for the character of Chemehuevi Joe, a disinherited Indian and desert rat who is so cool, he needs his own novella. The rest of the plot is straight out of a Saturday morning television serial from the era in which the novella is set. Personally, 92 percent of what I know about the drylands came from Wagon Train episodes: Rattlesnake in your bedroll and sticking your hat up on the butt of Winchester to see if you're attracting gunfire. Wagon Train got a lot of action out of series that only progressed at 2 miles-per-hour. The other 8 percent of my knowledge came from came smuggling saguaro cacti across the secret border crossing between Ehrenberg and Parker Arizona. George's murderer should have considered that route. It would have saved him the unpleasantness of wounding a fruit fly inspector at the Vidal crossing near Parker. Horse Hunts could have been a killer novel. Just think of who was running around out there in 1960: Uranium prospectors, mad scientists, secret military convoys, lunatics crossing the desert night in ring-and-valve specials, not to mention the mysterious dead zones surrounding the secret military outposts. Author Gary George certainly knows the lay of the place. He could do this. In fact he might be the only one who could do it. If you're hooked on desert adventure, the ancient narratives of J. Smeaton Chase and Colln Fletcher's 'The man from the cave' will serve you well. ... show more

  • crime thriller
Format: Kindle
11/1960, Highway Patrolman Brandon Hicks, & Lieutenant Carlos “Horse” Caballo (San Bernardino County Sheriff, Korean War vet) found a female body (25+, Caucasian) in the trunk of a car. The victim was found out to be Rose Lynne Vickers (wife, nee Spartan). Lieutenant Caballo, Deputy Sheriff Jim Harkness (San Bernardino County), Deputy Sheriff Andy Chesney (San Bernardino County), & Joe Medrano (Chemehuevi Indian) had been combing the area on horseback. Harvey Vickers (28, husband, Bondurant’s Market, Parker, AZ) had no intention of surrendering. Is he the real killer? I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one. A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written crime thriller book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great crime thriller movie, or better yet a mini TV series. To be continued. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars. • Wow! what a story
Format: Kindle
As a long time Arizona resident I am familiar with much of the desert lore used in this story, but this book went beyond the ordinary. The main character is both a moral man, and a practical and compassionate officer. Great read.

  • Mojave Desert Redefined
Format: Kindle
G..J. George has actually improved my opinion of the place I've called home for 28 years. Raised in a suburb of L..A., I moved to the desert after two term enlistment. (Home is where the wife is...) The fauna and flora description GJG adds to the narrative reminds me that it is not so barren a place and an entire ecosystem has done very well long get my arrival. This is the second GJG book I've read, I'm liking lieutenant Horse. This character reminds us that not all that is done in law enforcement is found attic in the notes of a report. It also reminds us that things are different today and not always better. ... show more

  • One of my top three favorite authors
Format: Kindle
I hurried to get the last four of Gary J. George's books after I read his first one. I live on one of the roads the characters sometimes drove through 1/2 a century ago and the characters are so alive I find myself turning my head to listen for them as they go by. I'm currently watching the thermometer climb towards the forecast 117 temperature today and I sometimes forget to love the beauty of this place when it gets this unbearably hot, but the author is a man who undoubtedly loved this desert deeply at one time and learned many of its secrets. I never tire of his descriptions of the area or the contents of the characters' moral character...and I know I will either deeply admire them or see another side of human depravity I'd rather not. He is now one of my top three favorite authors and I'm a voracious reader. I will be re-reading his books and waiting eagerly for more. ... show more

I really enjoyed reading this. I was so in to it the ending came as a shock. I didn't realize that I had read that in so short a time. I will definitely look for other books by this author
