  • Worked well in my cordless drill with 442 in-lb torque (relatively high for a DIY-grade drill)
The primary application I had in mind for these augers was to use the 1.6 inch auger to drill holes 'straight down' (perpendicular to a level plane, as shown on a level) to accommodate pieces of 1-1/4 inch PVC pipe — which I use as permanently-in-ground support sockets for vertical members. In the past, I sharpen the end of the PVC and hammer it into the soil — a mode in which it's difficult to maintain 'straight down'. I thought I could do better with the 1.6 inch auger if I carefully adjusted angle to perpendicular using a bidirectional level mounted atop my drill. Unfortunately, regarding this application, I'm a bit disappointed. I found that the 1.6 inch diameter auger — mounted in a 442 in-lb capacity cordless drill set at screwdriving-speed gear ratio — bored a hole in my heavy clay soil fairly easily.* However, I found that the inside diameter of the hole became enlarged in the process — perhaps unsurprising, given that... • ... soil particles are not bound to each other; soil doesn't behave like a piece of wood when drilled. • ... I quite frequently needed to pull the auger out to remove drilled soil, thereby abrading the walls of the hole and enlarging it. It looks like I may need to at least partially revert to sinking the 1-1/4 inch PVC pipe by hammering. However, given that the auger is not a precision tool, and that its manufacturer has no control over variable soil behavior, I guess I can't complain too much. I also bored a large hole using the 3-1/2 inch auger — mounted in that same 442 in-lb capacity cordless drill. I was surprised how well the drilling process went, and I may use that tool for future applications. Overall, I think that both augers performed relatively well, the limitations of the smaller one for my application notwithstanding. Presumably, results will be as variable as soil type. Moreover, I think the cost for these augers is quite reasonable. Therefore, I find no fault in this product and give it an 'A grade' — five stars _______________________ * NOTE: my heavy clay soil is relatively workable at this point in time, given that we've had a lot of rain lately. I'm guessing that that this auger may not work well when the clay soil is 'baked' like it sometimes is in midsummer. ... show more

  • Great for the fall bulb planting
These made a difference when planting bulbs. I used in the past the manual digger which could be difficult on hard soil plus time consuming. These auger are heavy and sturdy, so you need a good drill with enough power to handle the weight. Once you have the right setting making the holes goes fast. I used these to make the holes for bulbs and the little one for the snow marker holes. ... show more

  • Sturdy Construction
I was surprised by the sturdy construction and quality for the money. The spirals on the 3.5" auger has four welds and the 1.6" auger has three welds holding the spirals to the shaft. They are holding up well so far in the hard ground I was using them on with a hammer drill which puts out a lot of torque. I would have given them five stars but I felt that the spirals should continue higher up the shaft especially on the 1.6" auger so that you do not have to keep lifting the auger up so often to clean out the hole. I recommend these augers. ... show more

  • Heavy Duty
I didn’t expect these to be so heavy duty! Made of very strong, sturdy steel, these will be a nice addition to my wife’s gardening tools. The only drawback that I see is the larger auger might be easier to use if it has a longer extension so you wouldn’t have to bend over so deep.

  • cuts through the clay just fine
Digging holes out here is fine til you're 8 inches or so down and hit clay, then it's a pain. I used these to break it up so I could go deeper and it worked like a charm. Construction is surprisingly well, and didn't catch at all when in use. larger bit had some issues at first, but angling it and applying pressure to get it started was all I did then I straightened it out and it just did the rest at that point. I'd recommend it if you need to dig some holes or plant trees, anything in hard compacted soil. ... show more

  • Very solid
I ordered these for my wife as she's always wanting me to dig holes for her plants. Based on that statement I think I need to revisit my life's decisions that made me arrive at this point. They are very solid construction, and appear just like augers for drilling into wood. It would not surprise me if these would actually drill into wood. The smaller one has a diameter of 1.5" which is perfect for seedlings. The larger one is around 4". They are both long enough and you will never need them to be any longer. My wife is looking forward to me using these. A quality product. ... show more

  • Easy planting
I have not used these to actually plant yet, but did go give it a try to see how well they worked. I got these in anticipation of planting in the spring. The bits fits easily into both my cordless and corded drill. They held well and did not loosen or slip at all. They quickly move through even hard packed dirt making a very nice hole while loosening the dirt around the area. Two sized auger bits come with it that offer a great variety for the plants you are planting and will be a huge time saver for your garden or flower bed. Great product that will be used for years to come. ... show more

  • Very solid
Unfortunately the cold season is now starting to come into full effect and won't be able to really use until the spring but I can say that the two augers feel very solid. There is one wide and one narrow so you should have what you need depending on what you are trying to plant. These will be great for planting bulbs or even small plants that you get from the big box stores. I also intend to use these to drill some holes around my trees so I can drop the those fertilizing tree spikes into them since the ground is always too hard to hammer them in like they tell you to. ... show more
