OK, this is a basic programmable thermostat. It is not a "smart" thermostat, or a "WiFi" thermostat. On the other hand, it is quite flexible and capable with a wide variety of HVAC installations and types. Three pages of the installation manual are dedicated to explaining all the parameters the installer can tweak to customize its operation in order to work as desired with all sorts of variations of HVAC system (if you change NOTHING in these parameters, and just leave the defaults as-is, the thermostat will work with most garden variety residential HVAC systems comprised of a single stage furnace (standard efficiency) and basic A/C unit). The thermostat snaps onto the wall-mounted UWP (universal wiring panel?) to which all the wiring from the HVAC controller gets connected. The wiring connections are push-in type, with spring levers to press down on in order to release each wire if necessary. A hinged door flips up to cover the UWP's wiring area, and presumably the hole in the wall through which the HVAC wiring cable passes through; this appears to make it look neater, discourage tampering with the wiring, and possibly to prevent different temperature air inside the wall from being able to influence the thermostat's operation. An extra benefit of the UWP is that it is compatible with all Honeywell "T" series thermostats, so if you install this fairly basic model, you can upgrade to a "smart" and/or "WiFi" model later and install it simply by snapping it onto the UWP. This thermostat is powered from two AA size alkaline cells, thus comprising the battery. This battery provides power for operation of the thermostat and also for the LCD display's blue backlight. If you simply connect the four basic wires for Heat, Cool, Fan and Power, this thermostat will work. However, if you use a five wire cable and thus are able to also connect the Common wire between HVAC controller and this thermostat, it will now get all operating power from the HVAC controller's transformer, rather than from the battery, and the battery will be there just to provide backup power for the programming memory & presets. With the four wire connection, the display backlight will come on briefly when you are using the buttons to change settings, but with the five wire connection, you can program the backlight to be on only when there is button activity, or you can have it be on all the time. Note that some places state that this thermostat has a touchscreen. It does not. It has a row of five pushbuttons located just below the display. The left most and right most buttons are always assigned as (-) and (+) for changing parameters and/or for changing the temperature setting, or otherwise navigating through the settings and configuration menus. I really like this thermostat, and it would’ve been really easy to install, except I misunderstood the directions. Luckily, before I returned it, I looked at a review on a similar model that included a picture of the way it was hooked up. I tried using the same slots, it worked perfectly and was otherwise easy to install ... show more

It worked very well. It was universal to my old thermostat. Installation was very quick and easy. I didn’t do it. I called a technician out took them less than 25 minutes and I was back running Cole, AC and my heater.

I installed this as my NEST was giving me major problems.! Its not hooked up to the internet & I like it! Works very well & its programable. The back light is a bit dim is my only complaint.

Our AC tech recommended it because I think they can do troubleshooting the system or maybe just the thermostat. It works great. You can't connect it to the Internet it's just a digital thermostat with on off programming
