Love this fan so much! Living in an old house where the circulation is hard to achieve created a hunt for a good window fan. All the old ones I would buy had to be manually turned around to either pull air out or push air in, this one has a remote! Sometimes the small things are the best things, making life easier by switching between intake, exhaust or exchange with the push of a button, now... I can't live without it. The fan moves a large amount of air while being relatively quiet (it is a fan after all.) Three speeds means I am able to choose the airflow and the volume from across the room. It fits well in my small windows and the accordion sides allows for adjustment. I am grateful for a decent fan at a decent price that works exactly how I need it to. ... show more

update- Don't waste your money on the slightly cheaper options, the 9" Digital Control w/ Remote is the one to get. I've had this fan for months and run it day and night. It is excellent. This is a very well-thought-out fan for a bedroom. The only negative is it expands only on one side and doesn't stay in place well. I increased my rating to five stars. ------------------------ This is my Initial impression after buying and returning a few fans on Amazon. First some general fan comments. I've used a fan instead of AC in the bedroom for 30+ years. The quality of fans has gone way down. Previous brands I used that lasted 10 years do not last more than two or come defective. Don't trust old reviews, fans look the same but are not. Common problems are rattling or motor buzzing, which makes it hard to sleep or fans stop working in a year or two. The most common problem with a new fan is the blade being out of balance. If the blade wobbles even slightly the fan will start making noise after several weeks, often after the return window closes. This Fan: A nice design. It is pleasant sounding on the lowest setting. The volume of air is good, about what I'm used to. I generally don't use the remote but this one is nice and mutes the beeping sounds. The two lights are not overly bright and are only on for a few seconds when the fan is turned on or the settings are changed. Negatives: I have it mounted sideways and the expandable sides do not support weight well. Fortunately, I only had to expand the top to make it fit. The fan bottom is too wide to fit in the side groove of the window, so I had to use a metal bracket from a previous fan to make it secure. It would be nice if I could purchase a cover and a screen. I like this fan so far. I will see how long it lasts then update the review. ... show more

I bought this for the laundry room window on the South side of our un-airconditioned house. I did not expect great results, but thought it would help keep it from being unbearable as we are coming into 100-degree temps this week. I haven’t used the remote yet - it’s in a very small room - so I’m not reviewing that. Pluses: Everything. Easy to install! just open the box, slide it out, pre-assembled, put it in the window, and plug it in. There are three settings on each side, one side for speed (low, medium, high) and the other for mode (intake, exhaust, exchange). Our house has no central air. We have a larger size room air conditioner in the center room two rooms away that is running on max cool with a tiny rotating fan in front of it to move the air around. We also have a Lasko rotating ion fan in the living room that is actually making it cold in that room. Effective: Right now it’s 92 degrees outside the laundry room window with the sun blasting through. The new fan’s settings are on High Exhaust, and the temperature in the room is very bearable and quite comfortable. The last three nights I had it on Low Exchange, and it was actually chilly in there in the morning with outside temps in the 50s at night and mid- to high 80s in the days. I honestly am blown away by how effective this fan is. I did put little pieces of white duct tape along the very thin cracks between the fan and the window frame on all four sides to keep micro bugs out. It is slightly loud, but that is irrelevant to me, and actually a plus considering where it is, so that’s okay. I did buy the three year warranty, just in case, and kept the box so we can store it away when it gets cold again. There are no negatives to it. Highly recommend! ... show more

    • Honest review: stay away from Holmes

Don't waste your time if you're looking for a fan worth the cost of this one. The value just isn't there and here are the primary reasons why: - Fans like these used to last YEARS. The quality of the motors are such that even with occasional disassembly and lubrication to try and make the most of them, the bearings just aren't going to hold up. They are also getting worse over the years. Out of the box, if this fan is tilted backwards or forwards a marginal amount, you will hear the telltale scratchy rattle of the shaft grinding against the bearing. No amount of grease or lube will solve this permanently. The bearings are just crap from the factory. I have also seen many new fans like this missing felt or ceramic washers that can also cause the sound to appear. When installed exactly vertical, I don't hear the sound, though as the lube dries up, I expect to as I have with others. It also gets worse the colder the fan is. - The airflow is terrible for 2 9" fans. I have an older model Holmes fan with blue fans that spin more air with just one of the two fans operating. Yes it's more quiet, but fans like these are not supposed to be silent. I happen to like the white noise of "loud" window fans that drown out all kinds of subtle annoying noises within and outside of the house. - 3 speeds. 1, 2 and 3 as the max. Speeds 1 and 2 are useless as they have a very LOUD AC buzzing noise. This is probably due to the PWM control, which they have cheaped out on as you are not supposed to be able to hear it - the switching frequency should be above human hearing. If you press your ear to the motor housing area directly, you can hear it directly. With my fan in particular, it disappears on the highest fan speed. Since the airflow is already terrible, I won't be using any of those speeds anyway, but that makes them doubly useless. - The mounting bottom of this fan didn't properly fit in my window. I had to use a ~ 2"x2"x36" long block of pink insulation foam to lift it up properly. Your mileage may vary here but this one sits lower than others I've used that have an extra inch or so of plastic housing. I didn't use the feet. - The clips that hold the accordion panels don't click in anymore. They are held by gravity now? Absolute frustration. I ended up using white electrical tape to keep them at the desired spacing. - No manual controls. The fan will not re-boot after a power loss without human intervention. I already had a wireless outlet and switch to remote control my other fan. Now I have to use their remote. If you know electronics and actually like this fan, you can likely bypass whatever features you want and re-wire it, but still. - The beeping sound returns after you press the power button. There is no memory of it while plugged in and powered off except fan speed and direction, but not your sound setting. Terrible oversight. - Don't think you're getting anything special with the included AAA batteries. They are carbon zinc, which leak just as bad as Alkaline when they expire. For a $40 fan that seems to have cut every corner in development and production, I would have hoped for at least a remote control with a 3V lithium cell over AAA. The only pros about this fan are the following: - Removable back grill for cleaning. This was the only reason I purchased this fan as this feature is hard to find. If I didn't need this fan (some airflow is better than nothing right now) and had the time to find something worth the money (believe me, I've tried), I would have returned it instead of writing this review. This fan is worth $15 at best. It will be my last ever purchase of a Holmes product as the quality has reached rock bottom over the years. ... show more

    • Decent Features, but Cheap Build Quality Makes It Overpriced

My biggest issue with this fan is its flimsy, low-quality construction. The plastic feels thin, brittle, and lightweight—similar to seasonal plastic items like 99¢ Halloween buckets or Dollar Tree products. From the moment you unbox it, the fan screams “disposable.” Functionally, the fan works as expected, and I appreciate the ability to reverse the airflow without physically removing and flipping it. However, the side extenders were a major letdown. They have an accordion-like design, but the clips meant to hold them in place are just as cheaply made as the rest of the unit. There are four clips (one on each side, top, and bottom), and straight out of the box, one was already malfunctioning. This meant the extenders wouldn’t stay in place—a deal-breaker for me. At $45–$50, the fan is simply overpriced for its quality. If it were closer to $25—the price of a basic box fan—it would be a reasonable purchase. But at its current price point, the poor build quality is hard to justify. Pros Worth Mentioning: • Quiet operation • Good airflow on the highest setting • Auto-dimming lights (turn off after ~5 seconds—great for light-sensitive sleepers) • Included remote (small, but convenient) • Customizable airflow (both fans inward, both outward, or one in and one out—a must-have feature missing in many window fans) I’m giving it three stars solely because of the customizable airflow feature, but the build quality leaves much to be desired. ... show more
