This is a child's guitar, so I didn't have very high expectations. The reviews capture the good and bad. This isn't going to win any significant praise for craftsmanship. But it works and sounds pretty good. The strings are going to stretch for a long time. Nylon strings will always stretch and slip a bit. Nature of the beast. Buy better strings that can handle the tighter tune this will need to sound good. You will want to tune it to A-D-G-C-E-A to play it with standard guitar notes/chords. It will take at while for the guitar to hold this tune, but it will. Better strings will help, but they aren't needed right away. The workmanship is pretty basic. There are obvious flaws in the finish, but not horrible. Nothing that impacts play. But it isn't going to win awards. The frets and fingerboard are smooth and feel good. What matters is here. My 3.5 year old son is over the moon with this. He just loves that he can bang away and daddy doesn't get upset with the bumps and drops - which shows this items true value. It's made well enough to be used by kids and it takes abuse well. 4.5 Stars when you factor the low price and durability. UPDATE: ** 2/26/15 ** We continue to enjoy playing this guitar. My son has learned a bit and can play a few notes and chords -- he just really enjoys the ability to "jam" when I'm playing mine. I love the quality of this cheap guitar. It now stays in tune for as long as we don't bump the turning pegs or the weather changes drastically. Otherwise, it stays in tune rather well - with the original strings. The tone is rich for the size. Action is still easy on the hands, but maybe a tad high. Not horrible mind you. In the nearly 2 years we've owned this, it has held up very well and looks pretty darn good considering what it has been through as my 3.5 year old is now 5, and lugs this around the house with him nearly daily. He even left it out in the play house out back and had to run and get it when he remembered at bed time. He loves it enough to want to care for it, so it goes back onto the stand each day. I enjoy playing it from time to time. I'm no guitarist - I really stink - but it is fun to play classical music on this and it sounds the part. So very happy and have now pushed this to 5 stars based on the durability and quality over time. While the finish isn't anything special and the hardware is cheap - so it the price and you are getting a lot more than you are paying for in this item. Winner. Highly recommend.

This isn't some cheap, throw away toy guitar. Sure, it's no Martin but it is a very real, wood guitar that sounds pretty good and is the right size for a small child. Actually, I enjoyed playing it myself. The strings are nylon and so are easy to play. Yes, they need to be tuned more often than steel but that is the nature of nylon. If you are looking for first rate beginner guitar for a 5 to 8 year old, this is it.

1/2 size guitars (34"), tend do be more expensive than beginner full size guitars. Considering a growing child who maintains interest in the instrument, will need a larger guitar in a relative short time. So...we don't want to spend too much money, but want a good enough instrument to get a good start. This Hohner is a good choice for little hands. I'm a retired teacher and musician. First inspection: good finish, no flaws. The neck is perfect. Holding down a string at top and bottom of the neck shows a very slight bend in the middle. (perfect) It was suggested to re-string with better quality which I did. https://www.amazon.com/DAddario-EJ27N-Student-Fractional-Classical/dp/B003B0W7O8 (Get help if you've never done this.) The action at the first frets is very easy. (Most lesson book start here.) There is plenty of room to file notches in the plastic bridge to improve action in the upper neck, but truthfully, a good student will be on to a bigger guitar by the time that's needed. The tuning pegs grind a bit. They did loosen after installing new strings. Be prepared to do lots of tuning in the beginning. (every day for a while while strings stretch) Can't wait for Christmas to give this to my grandson! You might check out the bundle with string set and tuner. You can download a good tuner on your Iphone. (Hint: look for green pick) Hope this helps you.

I'm a intermediate guitarist and I wanted something that would travel well and be fun to noodle around on. I saw this on WOOT! and picked it up for $30 thinking if it didn't work out there was no big loss. This little guitar is awesome! YES, you have to play the heck out of it and tune it frequently in the beginning. NO, my strings haven't snapped. I can't find any flaws in the build or finish on BOTH of mine... I say both because I loved the first one so much I came back here to Amazon and bought a second one so I could leave one up at my cabin. The second one is exactly the same quality as the first. I spent some time gently stretching the strings by pulling gently on them above the sound hole before tuning each time I played it for the first week or so. I play some songs with a capo and it's no problem. Barre chords sound great. I have bigger hands and sometimes it gets a little crowded on the fretboard, but overall I don't have any problems. This is a real instrument and has pretty decent sound for its size. I have four full-sized guitars, a Martin backpacker, and two of these Hohners and I find myself picking up the Hohner because it's so darn fun and easy to play. I would highly recommend this as a travel guitar to anyone. I see it is now $67 but I got mine here on Amazon for $29.99, so just keep watching the item. Also, Fleabay has them listed often for around $30 new.

Update: After trying several 1/2 and 1/4 size small children’s guitars around this price point, this one is clearly the best. It’s the only guitar that has good intonation and a set up that is playable out of the box. That’s a lot to expect from a tiny, inexpensive guitar, but this one delivers. Original: This is a playable guitar that is most appropriate for a child who is just starting out. Watch my video to hear finger picking and strumming! Comfortable Playability: The low action makes it easy on the fingertips, which is great for beginners or children just starting out. Tuning: The included strings can hold standard tuning after stretching the strings bit, which can be accelerated by gently pulling on them and playing for several days in a row. Tuning Stability: During continuous play, after about 15 minutes, the G, B, and high E strings tend to go about 5-10 cents flat (roughly a tenth of a half step on the piano). The guitar will certainly need to be tuned every time it is played, but that's best practice with any guitar. Size: Although I'm used to playing a Taylor GS Mini (3/4 scale), I found the smaller size of this guitar a bit tricky to adjust to as an adult. It’s likely perfect for a child aged 5-8 years old and those with smaller hands/frames. String Issues: The low E string tends to slip off the fretboard occasionally, which can be frustrating during play. The low E can also be buzzy if your fingers are positioned perfectly. Capo and Barre Chords: It handles barre chords and capos well, though it tends to go slightly sharp when using a capo.

Just got the Hohner guitar today, but here are my first impressions: Tuning was brutal; Tried tuning to typical E-A-D-G-B-E but the strings seemed very tight and sure enough I snapped the 1st string (luckily had an extra). I then double checked the packaging material to see if there was any info about how to tune but there wasn't, so I did a quick Google search to learn that 1/2 sized guitars should be tuned to A-D-G-C-E-A. This worked much better, but the guitar still goes out of tune every 5 minutes. Hopefully it will hold it's tune better one the strings settle in. The sounds quality is pretty poor - better than a toy - but hardly like a real guitar. Guitar seems cheaply made in terms of finish, but appears to be reasonably sturdy. Given the price the guitar is an okay deal, but in retrospect I'd rather spend a bit more money to get a higher-quality instrument. *Update after several months of use*: The guitar holds it tune just fine now. Still annoyed that the directions didn't specify the A-D-G-C-E-A tuning but it ended up being an okay purchase. Would increase to 3.5 stars if that was an option.

I'm a guitar player, and purchased this for my 5 year old niece to see if there is any interest in learning. So my goal was to get something that was good enough to hold tune and 'play' while sounding like a real guitar for the next year or so until an upgrade. And reasonably priced so if she used it as a baseball bat it wouldn't be the end of the world. So I read the reviews, and quickly decided on this Hohner as a majority of the reviewers said it held its tune (nothing more important really). This guitar could barely be tuned when new, but I attributed this to the guitar as well as the strings being new. So we kept tuning. Pretty much have to tune this guitar every time you pick it up, and even more than once while you're playing it. Just simply cannot hold a tune (sorry to be repetitive). So I wrote the seller a couple months after purchasing explaininng this. Also told them that we still hadn't tried new strings, and it was quite possible that it's just the strings so that was my next step. They replied that they were very sorry to hear that, and to go ahead and try the new strings, if no improvement we could send it back for a replacement. So we changed the strings, gave it another couple months in case the strings were still 'stretching', and the same issue, the guitar just won't stay tuned. Wrote Musician's Friend again to which they replied: 'I apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you, unfortunately we cant do any kind of return or exchange for the guitar at this time. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us. Please feel free to contact us if you have any other questions or concerns, or if you are not completely satisfied with the service you have received from us today. We appreciate your feedback.' Not exactly what we were expecting. To keep this in context, it's a very cheap guitar, looks nice, I guess you get what you pay for. But the point being we did our homework and reviewed various in this category. Would have gladly paid more for a guitar that would stay tuned. Very surprised that Musician's Friend took this stance. We are the parents of 2-year old twins, and sought to find a guitar which would be a good 'starter' for them. With over 30 years of guitar playing myself - both acoustic and electric, my first concern after reading numerous reviews was the question of whether the instrument would stay in tune. I can say that after two months, I can very highly recommend this guitar. After receiving the instrument, the first thing I did was rewind the strings using the standard through-the-hole (tuner hole), reverse direction (and go underneath the previous wind) and bring up to pitch so that the strings would stay 'locked' rather than slip every time you tune it. I also shortened the amount of string used on the E,A and D (heavier) strings by about three inches to reduce slack and slippage. The guitars are one of their favorite toys, sounds good, and they began to 'sing' within a few weeks. Yes they have brutally treated the instruments, including sitting on, stepping on and generally abused them. Nevertheless except for the expected dings and slight chips, they have held up well. A quick tune once a week with an analog tuner, and the occasional tweak, and we enjoy lots of time with Old MacDonald and Johnny Cash ha ha. And most importantly of course, I don't have to spend time tuning it constantly! Best of luck to all with your musical efforts!
