These bookcases can be stacked horizontality using a combination of varying heights and colors. These shelving units vary from enclosed spaces with door access or open shelving in others. These shelves are so nice I ordered a second set. My husband is pretty handy with fixing things, but it was quite easy to put these together. Just be sure to take note of the numbers on the shelves as you put it together. There are special shelves that go on the top and bottom. I choose white ones and it looks so nice in my closet. If you are looking for high quality solid wood, this is not your deal. However, the hardware and preparation for the screws is well done and things went together smoothly. I needed this to hold cleaning towels in my laundry room. Shipment was fast. Instructions stated it would take 30 minutes for 1 person to put together. I'm terrible at putting things together so it took me twice that time. I will say that if you follow directions, this case is very easy to assemble. If I had read ALL the instructions before I started, I would not have made the error I did involving the last two steps. Make sure you slide the back panels in BEFORE you attach the second side panel to the shelf panels. I failed to do this and ended up ruining the bookcase when I took the last two steps apart and tried to do it the right way. The particle board is not forgiving and I cracked every shelf because the screws didn't line up the second time around. All that being said, now that I know what I did wrong, I'm going to order a second shelf, put it together the right way, and use the one I ruined to hold shoes/boxes inside a clothes closet. There's nothing impressive about the bookcase but it is as described, perfectly. ... show more

    • Great basic bookcase

This is a really good bookcase when you simply want to store somethings in a narrow space. I was not trying to match room decor or make anything really pretty. I basically needed to get some things off the floor and organize a worn out three tier bookcase from Walmart that was getting filled with craft items. Both are the same depth but I prefer this for the height beside my window, while the other is below the window. It is very dark and, yes, the shelves are black on top and the brown particle board underneath but I don't mind and if I did I would use the contact paper available from Amazon to freshen it up. The shelves are like dark caverns anyway so a light paper on the back for decoration and top would be welcome. I actually purchased remote control puck lights on here to light the back of the shelves. Otherwise, the other complaint of some is the screws being surface screws and silver and the shelves not being adjustable are not an issue for me. The screws stick out about 1/4 inch but are heavy duty screws made to resist digging in and wear from movement, so I actually do not mind. The color can be covered with nail polish or permanent marker or if I wanted to hide all together I would use some hinged screw caps to get rid of the eyesore. For me this is utility and it serves my purpose well. Invest in at least 10 more dollars worth of additional items or if you have them at home as leftovers like I do, you can make this work on a budget. It does need to screwed to wall or stabilized because it is definitely a tipping hazard. Will be buying more when it comes back in stock. ... show more

    • Don't waste your money - way over priced. Should be a dollar store item.

Do not buy this if you plan to use it anywhere other than the garage. The only photo that shows the poor quality of this item is the measurement photo and the 360 view. The screws on the outside to hold the shelves in place do not screw in all the way leaving them sticking out at least 1/16 of an inch. The first order arrived damaged/unusable and the second one was still slightly damaged on a corner but we just made do. After we unboxed it all and began the assembly it became obvious this is not worth even half of the price paid. The shelf boards are not finished on the underside and is VERY noticeable! The "engineered wood" edges are not all smooth - making the cheap finish look even cheaper. What a disappointment this has all been. ... show more

I bought two of these, because at $40 they were a good price - Much higher and I would have been quite upset with what I got. The Pros: Easy to assemble Feel solid and sturdy when assembled Don't feel like they were trying to skimp on screws The Cons: One unit was missing the black surface on three of the shelves Basically all parts arrived dirty (Finger smudges, dust, etc) Many parts were dinged, scratched, or marred. Mostly on the edges but some in the middle. The screws do not go even remotely flush The design is terrible for carpet and will wobble a lot if your carpet is even remotely long. I ended up getting extra wood and hardware to bolt the two into one unit and give the whole thing legs so it sits on the carpet nicely, and while I'm satisfied with the final result, spending half as much again in supplies just to get it to sit nicely on carpet seems like a bit much. ... show more
